Another thread in the saga filled up (so no forwards link)

I think maybe we're endurance athletes, or maybe multievent like a decathlon Grin

@Iheartmysmart

Just when you think things can’t get much worse the bloody boiler packs up! Can’t get the parts until tomorrow and it’s minus 2 here. Luckily I’ve got a plug in radiator so can at least keep one room warm. Could actually cry at the moment!
Oh God, you poor thing. Heating troubles in winter are the worst Sad I've been there many times. Why do the bastards always chose minus temperatures to pack up?
Iheartmysmart · 07/01/2021 13:58

Thanks @thenightsky It’s just typical. Had the blasted thing serviced in October and was told then that it was getting towards the end of its useful life. Never mind, have retreated to the sofa with blankets and coffee.

Thing is at secondary it seems they just sit at computers doing the online work set - DS said today some are in school doing this. So not exactly any more interaction really than at home

I noticed a teacher session on zoom or whatever the thing is it looked quite fun teacher in the middle and teens in hoodies etc lurking in the boxes.

Orangeblossom77777 · 07/01/2021 14:11

funny, not fun

Orangeblossom77777 · 07/01/2021 14:11

Is there perhaps some green scheme to help with a new boiler recently?

We got one a few years ago through some thing like that.

Orangeblossom77777 · 07/01/2021 14:22

Had to laugh, BBC reporting dramatically "Fears schools will be overwhelmed by laptopless pupils" Hmm

www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-55565537

Ours just sits them in the computer rooms a bit apart.

Orangeblossom77777 · 07/01/2021 14:23

There are concerns some schools in lockdown could be inundated with pupils without laptops after a change to the vulnerable pupil list.
Pupils are learning remotely in England after schools were closed on Tuesday to all but children of key workers and those deemed vulnerable.
But those without laptops or space to study are now eligible to attend school, under government guidance

Might be of use to someone

ISaySteadyOn · 07/01/2021 14:23

?
Damn those students wanting an in-person education.

ISaySteadyOn · 07/01/2021 14:28

Sorry, X post with your first post.

Evenstar · 07/01/2021 14:28

Feeling very low today, can’t get warm even though the heating is on and I have a fan heater on the go. Took the dogs out and met someone I know who works at a major supermarket who told me they are planning to ban anyone without a mask from entering their stores and she agrees with them. Her husband is ECV, so I can understand she is worried, but she is aware that I cannot wear a mask and has been sympathetic in the past. She said anyone who cannot wear a mask should get a volunteer to get their shopping.

I feel so depressed that not only do I have to stay at home, but some people expect me to even give up the ability to go into a shop for milk midweek. I am doing my main shop online, so it is literally 5 minutes, but it is my independence to not have to ask DH or DS to do that.

110APiccadilly · 07/01/2021 14:35

"...met someone I know who works at a major supermarket who told me they are planning to ban anyone without a mask from entering their stores"

Isn't that illegal under disability discrimination legislation?

AaahWoof · 07/01/2021 14:35

Please not Tesco... please not Tesco...

Evenstar · 07/01/2021 14:39

@AaahWoof no not Tesco 💐

AaahWoof · 07/01/2021 14:39

Oh dear god I'm already excluded from practically everywhere - I'll be literally under house arrest if it's our local supermarket - it's the only place I SEE people (from 2m away and me hiding down aisles for fear of mask hate)

Evenstar · 07/01/2021 14:46

@AaahWoof exactly how it makes me feel, as if we are being put under house arrest, but we have done nothing wrong. I wear a lanyard and haven’t had a problem so far, but it really shook me to think someone I know thought excluding people from shops is OK.

@110APiccadilly I am not sure how we stand with disability discrimination, COSTCO now insist you must wear a visor if you can’t wear a mask and seem to have got away with it.

Pleasenomoreglitter · 07/01/2021 15:05

I was in Sainsburys this morning and overheard a manager telling the poor woman counting people in that she needs to stop and question anyone not mask wearing.

110APiccadilly · 07/01/2021 15:09

Half the staff in our local supermarket seem to be wearing lanyards rather than masks, so I hope for their sake it's not that supermarket chain.

Iheartmysmart · 07/01/2021 15:12

Does anyone know if there has been anything published about the places where Covid is most likely to be transmitted? I’m not sure if I’m searching incompetently or if the info just isn’t out there. Can’t believe people are causing huge outbreaks by being in a supermarket without a mask. It’s be interesting to see where most of the spread is.

I did ask about the boiler replacement scheme but don’t think I’m eligible unfortunately. I’m having mine replaced tomorrow rather than repaired. Seemed a more logical choice.

TabbyStar · 07/01/2021 15:15

There are figures about where people have been before they were infected, but they're fairly meaningless IMO, they just reflect the places people are actually allowed to go.

ISaySteadyOn · 07/01/2021 15:23

I had thoughts about masks. Remember when there was a fuss about people buying lanyards so they wouldn't have to wear a mask? As it stands, if wearing a mask would cause you extreme distress, you are exempt. Therefore, going to the trouble of getting a lanyard indicated that masking would indeed cause you extreme distress so you are exempt.

And, you know, places that do this deserve to be shamed as discriminatory and ablist.

ISaySteadyOn · 07/01/2021 15:24

The banning of people not wearing masks is discriminatory and ablist, in case not clear.

MercyBooth · 07/01/2021 16:25

I HATE this fucking useless dystopian shithole of a country. Last night the switch on the immersion heater broke. Electrical shop is CLOSED. Thought keeping clean was a priority. DH has used a switch meant for a cooker and we are testing it now. He knows what hes doing luckily. The more i think about it, the more these rules are there to protect the rich.

110APiccadilly · 07/01/2021 16:39

I suspect it's worse data quality than that - are many people, when asked where they've been, going to say, "At my mate Dave's," or, "To that illegal rave the other night", or will they mention only work and the supermarket?
Seriouslymole · 07/01/2021 16:49

Oh well, that's DD home as well. School sent a message today and have been reiterating to the kids that if they have one parent at home, then they should not be in school.

Feel so despondent today. It feels so dystopian, more and more like 1984. If you work for the state then your children get educated, if you don't then they are hung out to dry. It was hilarious, the headteacher sent a heartfelt plea on a video message - so painful - saying what "top class online provision" they were providing. It is beyond shite.

DesireAs · 07/01/2021 16:59

Anyone watching Sir John Bell on BBC1 now (he's the warm-up act for Boris). What a breath of fresh air. Love it when his type slip through the net - least scare-mongering interview for a long while.
