Which wellies for children last?

I bought some wellies for my son in late August and over the Xmas break they both developed holes on the front part of the boot between the surface and rim around the foot bit. I’m 😡 as they were expensive -£28 - and I thought they’d last a while and seemed a good brand. They’ve been lightly used, maybe every other weekend in the playground kind of thing rather than miles of country walks. They replaced some wellies from Jojo where the same thing had happened (surface cracking).

Any recommendations for wellies which last longer than a few months?

We've had success with the Chipmunk ones before. My nearly 3 year old is currently wearing Sainsbury's Gruffalo ones which have lasted really well too.

I’ve found these John Lewis ones to be great. Lots of sizes and colours. Sizing is very generous.

Bogs wellies are a bit pricy but last ages and are very warm and comfortable to wear - I've known them to be passed down through 3 or 4 children.

Sainsburys ones have always lasted for mine, or Next.

Well my children have always out grown their wellies so none have fallen apart. (and they just get cheap ones, think shoe zone or Asda.)

N0tfinished · 02/01/2021 14:01

Crocs ones. I've bought them for years and they've lasted through 2 boys each and many many walks in the woods. They are on the shorter side which I like for smallies, so maybe not great if you have a committed puddle jumper

Mincepiesallyearround · 02/01/2021 14:02

Thanks I will look at some of these brands. Perhaps it is our bad luck for both pairs of recent wellies to fall apart - first JoJo and now this other brand called Shoesme. If they’d been under a tenner I wouldn’t have minded so much!

We opt for snow boots instead of wellies. So much better

Continentalmama · 02/01/2021 14:02

I second crocs, They're really lightweight too.

DipSwimSwoosh · 02/01/2021 14:02

In my experience the following got holes

  • mountain warehouse
  • asda
  • garden centre

These didn't

  • tesco
  • sainsbury's
DipSwimSwoosh · 02/01/2021 14:03

Oh and Shoezone were good

Whyisitalwayssocold · 02/01/2021 14:04

Hunters are the only ones we've been able to hand down. We have some that are now on their 4th kid and still going strong!

Welshponyslave · 02/01/2021 14:11

Hunters last for us. We have horses so my children wear their Hunter wellies at least once a day, usually twice, all year round. They last to be handed down to DC2 and then to my niece.

Whalewithnosnail · 02/01/2021 14:11

The best we have had are sainsbury's. Jojo, frugi and joules all wore out quickly (joules terribly so). (Jojo cracked across the heal, the others worse through the soles very quicky).

We have some marks and Spencer ones on our youngest right now which are also doing remarkably well.

Mumdiva99 · 02/01/2021 14:15

One of my kids got through numerous pairs of wellies....cheap and more expensive. I find them hit and miss. Sometimes it's just luck.....but when you find a good pair they are indistrustructable and last forever. Decathlon have been OK and my daughter is in Joules. My youngest is in Dunlop I think.

LloydColeandtheCoconuts · 02/01/2021 14:17

Crocs for us too.

ArialAnna · 02/01/2021 14:20

We always buy ours from Hatley now. They last well and keep our kids feet nice and dry. Fun prints as well

Eyeskydry · 02/01/2021 14:24

Dunlop green wellies. I buy them secondhand and they last both of my children and they get a lot of use. Practically all the kids at school wear these (it’s a farming community).

We buy from Asda and they've been good and light. They will now pass to the 3rd child.

We only go for walks in the local park, btw.

planningaheadtoday · 02/01/2021 19:49

Hunters seems to last for ages and are passed on within our family.

MandosHatHair · 02/01/2021 19:53

Were they frugi or Jojo by any chance? I have given up buying expensive wellies now and just get supermarket ones (Sainsbury's or Asda) every pair has lasted until they have outgrown them.

DinosApple · 02/01/2021 20:08

Best ones I got were Croc fakes for £3.99 - lasted years (2 DC) and warm. Also John Lewis have done the miles.

Mol1628 · 02/01/2021 20:11

John Lewis or M&S.

Shirtyllama · 02/01/2021 20:15

Decathlon - £5.99, or £12.99 for ones with removable warm lining. Indestructible so far, have had immaculate outgrown pairs to pass down

FrumpyMumsy · 02/01/2021 20:47

Another vote for Crocs. (I also have a pair for tending to the chooks, but won't wear them out in public Blush). All one piece, so no seams to crack. Handles to help pull them on, lovely colours, and pretty cheap - I keep an eye on Amazon and usually buy the next size up for about £15.

I've just cleaned up the ones my 2 have been wearing (youngest is in hand me downs), and both pairs look good as new.
