Best veggie bacon alternative

bellagogosdead · 02/01/2021 10:40

I was a fan of tesco frozen veggie bacon, but they haven't sold it for more than a year. Quorn fake bacon is horrible, what else can I try?

this.co/products/rashers
This isn't bacon

Reasonably expensive but the best tasting one we have found.

kikisparks · 02/01/2021 10:45

I was coming to say this isn’t bacon too Smile

wheresmyhairytoe · 02/01/2021 10:57

This isn't bacon is lovely.

They don't sell that one near me. Is there one I can get from asda or sainsbury?

Vivera - fry it in olive oil to crisp up! Delicious

Trisolaris · 02/01/2021 10:59

(Nowhere near as good without the olive oil tip)

Lurleene · 02/01/2021 11:01

I have just tried this one and thought it was very tasty, I got it in Tesco.

Naked without the oink

We love this.co/products/rashers/ as well. Delicious, even for my carnivore DH.

I find it in Waitrose, but also larger Sainsbury's stores.

TellMeItsNotTrue · 02/01/2021 11:32

I like VBites, I get it online or from our local vegan shop (I appreciate we are very lucky in that respect, we were very surprised when it opened 3 years ago and thrilled it's thriving)

PuppyMonkey · 02/01/2021 11:35

We tried M&S fake bacon over Christmas and it worked ok in a butty imho.

EduCated · 02/01/2021 11:35

I like the Vivera bacon bits for chucking in things.

AtLeastThreeDrinks · 02/01/2021 11:38

Came to say This Isn't Bacon too, so realistic that the dog wouldn't leave my side! It looks a bit odd but the smell and taste are bang on.

bellagogosdead · 02/01/2021 11:46

I'm really looking for something more fake!
When I eat some fake meat stuff lately, it tastes a bit to real for me and it puts me off. Ds had some seitan fried chicken stuff which I tried a nibble of and it made me feel rather ill.

Mattesons are the best ones I've tried, both smoked and unsmoked, about £2 a packet (8 rashers) and usually in most supermarkets.

ZadieZadie · 02/01/2021 12:22

If you want something more fake why don't you use something bacon ish that isn't trying to be bacon?

I sometimes use a mix of fried halloumi and sundries tomatoes for a salty umami hit.

MrsPernicious · 02/01/2021 12:27

Tempeh brushed with soy sauce is a good bacon substitute.

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 02/01/2021 12:42

Smoked tofu (absolutely not the unsmoked, it's about the texture), sliced thin, a splash of soy sauce, and shallow fried till well cooked. It goes all salty and smoky and has the right crispy/chewy texture.

Yessss!! Lovely on toast
ThatIsNotMyUsername · 02/01/2021 12:45

There used to be a frozen one I would buy from a health food store. Must check it out (I only stopped because it was frozen).

NannyR · 02/01/2021 12:46

Oumph have started selling "smoky bits" , little bits of fake bacon, I think they are seitan based. They are very nice in pasta dishes not so good for a butty!

HPLikecraft · 02/01/2021 12:47

I used to love the Tesco one, too!

These days I use halloumi instead, though I may try some of the suggestions here.

bellagogosdead · 02/01/2021 14:02

Yeah, I might just go for some halloumi.

I really want a veggie bacon buttie now! I like the Cheatin' bacon from our local health shop.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/01/2021 14:49

I got some Facon from the Co-Op which is pretty good. Have had it in a sarnie and also in a kind of carbonara thing, but without eggs.

MsRinky · 02/01/2021 15:05

Halloumi with Deliciou bacon seasoning (which is vegan). I have vegetarians cry with joy by giving them this.
