Warning for tailgating - just curious

I’ve been sent the attached - completely accept it and it’s worked, I’ll change my ways (I honestly don’t normally do it, but get frustrated as there's a lot of lane 2, 3 and 4 hoggers, but I still see why I shouldn’t and won’t again)

But I’m just really curious how they detect it from the cameras? Just interested in the technology and how it works.

Anyone know? I drove this route everyday so on my best behaviour now.

It's surprising the amount of pricks on motorways that do this.
Biggest cause of motorway pile-ups.

DishedUp · 29/12/2020 23:01

I honestly think people who tailgate must be too stupid to realise the consequences

Yes middle lane hoggers are frustrating. But theres never any excuse for driving dangerously or aggressively. Its not an excuse to say I was angry so I harassed another driver. If you are feeling so angry you cannot control your driving you need to pull over, you are not safe to be behind the wheel of a car.

Someone who is driving slowly, or sat in the outside lane (because realistically you can safely get past a middle lane hogger) is clearly anxious and incompentent. Only a fool is going to harrass an incompetent driver ffs.

Big brother is watching

Well, good. Because somebody has to stop people breaking the law, and there aren't enough cops on the beat.

I’m the “passive”
Variety according to this articles description.

No, you're not. The 'passive' sort don't do it with any deliberate intent. You have said you did it, in your OP, because you were frustrated at lane hogs. So you were driven by aggression, and were expressing your aggression by tailgating. That is not passive. Stop it.

The prevention/education has definitely worked in my case
I'm pleased to hear it:)
I have a more 'take no prisoners' approach and removed myself from the roads completely about 10 years ago, I like to pretend I'm a 13th century peasant unable to go further than the next village due to having only shank's pony to rely on

Nah, the light-hearted, I'm-fun-me post isn't cutting it.

It's a form of bullying, I'm afraid.

I'm not a Rules Must Be Followed person .. I'm all for using common sense in any given situation - if it means following the rules then great. But tailgating ... it's always some thicko who has no clue what they're doing or thinks they know better.

There's a special place in hell for tailgaters. In it, you are constantly pouring your non-alcoholic drink all over yourself because the person in front has braked unexpectedly. It's a very sugary drink and you're wearing an expensive silk top.

BlackandGold · 29/12/2020 23:12

This section of the M1 has narrow lanes due to ongoing roadworks to create a smart motorway so has cameras at much closer intervals.

Jimdandy · 29/12/2020 23:13

@auberginesarenottheonlyveg

nah, your opinion of what I do and what “cuts it” with whom doesn’t matter to me. Grin

I’ve taken onboard the comments about my dogs being transported in the boot of my car and will now be placing myself in the boot and allowing the dogs to be in charge of the vehicle.

The promise me they will stick to tail wagging and not tailgating.

auberginesarenottheonlyveg · 29/12/2020 23:15

Clearly. That's why you're happy to bully people on the road.

Jimdandy · 29/12/2020 23:17

@BlackandGold it’s also the section with the 60 limit and the average speed cameras so I can’t think I was speeding or I’d have had a ticket. I put the gadget on there set to 59. Unfortunately I drive that route everyday more or less. Definitely going to be more conscious now.

@auberginesarenottheonlyveg

Indeed. You’ve got me all weighed up.

I wonder how these new cameras work in heavy traffic. I used to commute on a busy dual carriageway and it was impossible to leave a safe distance. If anyone dropped back to make space between them and the car in front, someone would always pull into it. I'm really glad I don't do it any more, it was so hard to maintain the concentration to react instantly with insufficient stopping distance.

quirkyquails · 29/12/2020 23:24

What a shame you weren't fined for putting other people at risk.

LesLavandes · 29/12/2020 23:24

Hurrah to catching tailgaters. These drivers are very intimidating to the driver in front which could cause an accident

Jimdandy · 29/12/2020 23:25

@user1495884620 I do wonder as well if it was the busy day with bad traffic when we were all going slow. I’m usually at work around this time and I was still a few junctions away, it’s the bit with the average speed cameras so I set the speed thingy, I tend not to leave such a big gap when doing slower speeds (which I know accept is wrong and will be more mindful of)
@Soutiner
I didnt realise people put their dogs in the boot. I've owned dogs my whole life. They sit in the back seat.
Then you aren't observant enough to be driving.

Screwcorona · 29/12/2020 23:26

Definitly be more careful, I think it's good they've started this way as it will make you and others more aware that it's a danger. It's easy to slip into bad habits on the road so I really dont see the point in being rude to you about this.

Please just be aware on all roads and routes, i get really intimidated when tailgated. I follow the advice my driving instructor gave many years back to slow down for tailgaters, as do many people, to reduce stopping distance and urge to to either back away or overtake. It distracts the driver in front of you too so not only are you in danger of not stopping in time if they brake, you're making a crash more likely through distraction.
