Warning for tailgating - just curious

I’ve been sent the attached - completely accept it and it’s worked, I’ll change my ways (I honestly don’t normally do it, but get frustrated as there's a lot of lane 2, 3 and 4 hoggers, but I still see why I shouldn’t and won’t again)

But I’m just really curious how they detect it from the cameras? Just interested in the technology and how it works.

Anyone know? I drove this route everyday so on my best behaviour now.

@JacobReesMogadishu

The problem is some people tailgate “middle lane hoggers” but the “hoggers” are doing 65-70mph and going past the lorries doing 58mph on the left. But the aggressive twats are cross not everyone else is doing 72mph minimum.

About time people started realising how stupid they are driving so close to people. I don't do it & never had but I never took much notice if people did it too me until me & my other half got together, its his biggest pet hate. I was once driving along a duel carriage way in heavy rain, I was doing around 50mph but over taking (everyone else driving sensibly), bloke in a van behind me was about 2 inches off my bumper (I'm also very protective of my car as I love it) had my mum & 2 year old in the car, once I got home I looked back through the dash cam to get the company name on the van and sent them an email, he didn't seem to like me driving so slow on a duel carriage way (I drive a high performance Japanese car, people expect me to drive like an idiot/ boy racer & I don't) funnily enough when I pointed out it was stupid to drive that close normally, but even more stupid in the rain & really really stupid to do it with a company name all over the van I never heard back!
All new cars made should have dash cams front & rear fitted as standard as far as I'm concerned.
As someone who loves their car (I'll park at the far end of a car park to avoid all the idiots who just open their car doors without a care to the car next to them) I would be extremely upset if someone went into the back of me just because they are far too impatient to wait a few extra seconds. I'll probably never be able to afford my own house so my car is the most expensive thing I will ever own & unfortunately I have to put it on a road full of impatient idiots that drive to close to it.

What if I go out with people and dogs? Do the passengers have to get in the cage with the dogs?

This conversation is going from the sublime to the ridiculous.

"Only a fool breaks the two second rule"

Yes, lane hogging or driving unusually slow for the road conditions is annoying, but driving up the offender's backside is not helpful nor encouraging for them to change their driving style.

If I'm stuck behind a crap driver, I don't want to screw myself up by not having the space to react and brake safely if needed.

Oreservoir · 29/12/2020 22:31

My dh insists on putting our dog in the boot saying she has more room.
I have a proper attachment so she can be strapped on the back seat safely.
It’s something we fall out about every time we have a long journey.

I had a puncture once and had to get home on my spare wheel which is a thin one purely for emergencies. I was advised not to drive at more than 50 going home. The amount of tailgaters was dreadful, I kept to the slow lane but it didn’t stop idiots hooting at me.

Mrbob · 29/12/2020 22:32

I think it can both be true that tailgating is bad and dangerous and that people who drive too slowly in an inappropriate lane are also causing danger. Yes sometimes we have to slow down because someone is overtaking in front of us who is slower than us and that’s just life but there are also the people that sit in a lane they shouldn’t be in. Both need to be addressed

TwelveDogsOfChristmas · 29/12/2020 22:34

The people who think the answer to someone 'lane hogging' (often going at the speed limit) is to break yet more Highway Code rules and risk their own and others safety much more by dangerous manoeuvres like tailgating or undertaking really need to revisit the nursery and relearn the basic life code rule that two wrongs don't make a right Hmm

lalafafa · 29/12/2020 22:37

I’ve been driving up and down the M1 for years and noticed probably the last 5 at least less reckless driving. I saw 2 men racing and winding in and out of traffic. Within minutes the police caught up with them and pulled them over.
Interesting you can now report someone for tailgating, so dangerous.

Plussizejumpsuit · 29/12/2020 22:39

What we're you trying to achieve by tailgating?
@Jimdandy

annevonkleve · 29/12/2020 22:39

Wow I'm quite impressed that they have cameras for tailgaters.

Maybe they can introduce them for the idiots who undertake, too.

I don't like speeding on motorways but it's some of the other activities that cause accidents.

I hope you don't tailgate again OP.

OP, I wouldn’t advise tailgating for any great distance, but I have certainly come up behind slow drivers in the outside lane and flashed my lights to tell them to pull in to the empty inside lane. If they didn’t comply immediately when I was on call for hospital emergencies, I simply overtook them on the inside. Such drivers are an utter menace

You are more of a menace than any middle lane sitter. Flash at people to get out of your way? Undertake? What is wrong with the outside lane? I hope the cameras pick up your terrible driving. And no, being on call doesn't give you the right to drive in a dangerous and intimidating way.;

Plussizejumpsuit · 29/12/2020 22:42

@yankeedoodledandee

Do you not get frightened driving so close to someone knowing your stopping distance is compromised? Literally putting your own life in danger on the motorway Confused
I guess if a person is thick enough to do. This then maybe they aren't too good on the thinking front?!

Due to this thread I've just checked and undertaking isn't illegal in the UK although it could be a contributory factor in a dangerous driving case. In the US I found undertaking very hard to accept but now when I am driving there it doesn't bother me at all .
HighHeelBoots · 29/12/2020 22:45

MangoSeason
There is no such thing as a fast lane. There is a driving lane, the inside lane, then overtaking lanes. If a car in the middle lane is overtaking they are entitled to be there

auberginesarenottheonlyveg · 29/12/2020 22:45

Oh how this pleases me ... I utterly hate tailgating.

It never happens to me on roads with more than one lane, because I make sure I get back into lane after over-taking, but there are a lot of country roads round here. I can't bear people tailgating so I wait until THEY can see well ahead to overtake, then I indicate left to say to them "okay you're safe now, go ahead and get past".

It never ceases to amaze me how many of them have no clue what is going on and just sit there behind you, oblivious to the fact that you want rid of them, driving along, not concentrating, mithering the car in front. It is ALWAYS the shit drivers who do it. Always.

What other irritating and dangerous driving habits do you have OP?

Jimdandy · 29/12/2020 22:47

@AnyFucker I’ve realised that! Considering all the awful driving I see everyday I wonder where all these perfect, sanctimonious Mumsnet drivers are GrinGrinGrin

Well you know you are in the wrong and why do it? Sorry but you are out of order and I am glad youve received this although youll pay attention for a couple of weeks and go back to you ways

fuzzymoon · 29/12/2020 22:51

The new cameras can detect if you're on your phone, eating or smoking at the wheel and you can be prosecuted if it's seen as dangerous , tail gating , driving unsafely between lanes and speeding.
I think there's a camera that can go over 3 miles.

Jimdandy · 29/12/2020 22:53

@Yohoheaveho me too. Since posting I’ve discovered an article about it coming into force in November 2020.

The distance I left was only what I see everyday (though I accept it isn’t enough) but it is about time it was dealt with. This has worked, I fully intend to pay much closer attention to it, rather than just keeping the pace and distance of the road.

I was in lane 4 legitimately overtaking loads of people in lane 3 (who should have been in
Lane 2 since it was clear) and a driver raced up behind me (I was doing 70 because of the cameras) and flashed etc and got extremely close, it isn’t nice.

The prevention/education has definitely worked in my case.

I've read in the last week about cameras that can now detect tailgating

Another thing coming soon will be electric charging points sending an alert to traffic wardens when a non electric car is parked in an electric car space

Also, some traffic lights have cameras on them that can detect if your looking/using your phone when sat waiting at lights

Big brother is watching

Jimdandy · 29/12/2020 22:55

@auberginesarenottheonlyveg quite a few really. I’m partial to speeding on motorways where I know they don’t have cameras, I’ve been known to open drinks (non alcoholic of course Grin, eat, pick my nose and flick it out of the window...

That’s all that springs to mine but I’ll mull it over on my next drive to work
