So Madeleine is my favourite name for a girl and I am partial to Maddie/Maddy (which spelling do you prefer?) but I was trying to think of alternative nicknames maybe playing on the D, any ideas? Thanks I’m advance!!Smile

Maddi or Lainee. I’d probably pick the former.

MiddleClassProblem · 29/12/2020 20:41

You may end up with a nickname that doesn’t relate to her name at all.
Just see what falls out your mouth 😁

I know a Madeline known as Dee Dee, she's an adult though so no idea if she chose the nickname for herself or if it's what she was called by parents.

partyatthepalace · 29/12/2020 20:54

Lena

As in Magdalena, a version of Madeleine. Probably where the name Lena comes from actually.

claricestar · 29/12/2020 20:56

My Madeleine is also known as Mad, Mads, The Madster, Maddy and Maddie

QuentinInQuarantino · 29/12/2020 20:57

I have a three year old Madeline who calls herself Mattie which has caught on! She can't pronounce the d very well! We often also call her Malen (like saying the name so quickly it loses a syllable)

PuppyMonkey · 29/12/2020 20:59

My DD Madeleine is Maddie but occasionally Mash. Grin

GrumpyHoonMain · 29/12/2020 21:01

My DN’s bf is Madeline and her nickname is McCann by the other kids when they want to tease her. If you haven’t named your child yet just bear that connection in mind.

LynetteScavo · 29/12/2020 21:06

I prefer the spelling Maddy, but as it's a nickname you can't really complain if people write Maddie...as long as they spell Madeleine correctly.

Or Mimi?

minniemoll · 29/12/2020 21:14

Maidlin is an old English form of Madeleine, just to suggest something a bit different...

I have known 3: all known as Maddy or Maddie.

TildaTurnip · 29/12/2020 23:08

Madeleine is a lovely name but I dislike Maddie and Mads so I understand you wanting to find an alternative. However, I think they’re what most will end up shortening it to unless you insist on Madeleine. I know some people who have always corrected anyone shortening their name and therefore are always called by their complete one.

Madeleine McCann disappeared in 2007 so your DN and her friends, if still at school, aren't old enough to remember it and so have been fed that from pretty sick parents. If your DN and her friends are adults and do remember it then they are pretty awful people.

I know a Madeline that goes by Della or Delly as a nickname. It’s a beautiful name.

dontgobaconmyheart · 30/12/2020 11:31

Madeleine is a nice name but I don't know anyone who it that isn't going colloquially by Maddie or Mads, I don't think you can control the outcomes of these things for the sake of being different. If you want a child called the shortened version of something, name them that and be done.

My DM named me my full name but wanted me know as the shortened version. I disliked both and have changed my name. People's names will be what they will be and are their own to decide on.

Dee Dee
Della
Lena
Addy

daisypond · 30/12/2020 11:38

Madeleine is a lovely name. Maddie is the most common spelling for a short form, but you could have Della or Lena.

caringcarer · 30/12/2020 12:42

I know a Maddeleina who is Leina pronounced Lane a.
