I have so much money and I don't know how to spend it

OK now I've drawn you in...
I have amassed a pile of copper and fives.probablt about a fiver in total (not putting my address so I don't get robbed).
I'm completely stuck on how to spend it. I had the bright idea of using it at a self service check out in a quiet time (so as not to annoy the cashier or others) but these are all card. You don't see charity boxes any more. I'm not prepared to go to the bank for this, and I don't think they'd thank me either :)
Before anyone starts, yes I do know there's a pandemic on and I do have other problems.

One of these days I will go to the bank, just so I can come back on here and say I've done it.

op seeing as you are going can you take my two boxes which I’ve been meaning to take for a year or so ?
Might even offer you a coinstar like commission. In fact I may have stumbled upon a small business idea here.

woodhill · 30/12/2020 14:48

Can you pay some into self service tills still?

StealthPolarBear · 30/12/2020 15:21

Too late I'm afraid heron. However I have a 2p and 3 pennies I will gladly throw into your pot.

Sorry- did you give coins to the cashier, or pay in a coin-accepting self-service machine?

StealthPolarBear · 30/12/2020 18:59

Coin-accepting self service machine which I'd thought didn't exist in my local shop :)

Ah, thanks!

HeronLanyon · 30/12/2020 19:10

As my bank won’t accept for the moment and coinstar are thin in ground (and I am definitely staying home after today’s shitshow press conference and figures) I wonder if they may be interested in my haul here ??

If you do find a supermarket machine that does use coins, only use around £5 worth at once, as in our local, the machine started to jam with the amount

HeronLanyon · 30/12/2020 20:14

hawkins that really made me laugh.

My embarrassing change story (who knew that was a category). As v young barrister I was living off my coin jar for a while - security at the Old Bailey beeped and I had to disclose bags being taken to bank at lunchtime to security guys. I hadn’t really thought that through !

MushMonster · 30/12/2020 20:20

You have been told the main tricks: the change machine in big supermarkets, and the self service accepting copper coins.
In our local Morrisons there is a charity box, but not sure if it is only a local thing.

Hawkins001 · 30/12/2020 22:12

*Heron, I tended to keep the loose change in a camera case style wallet due to its strength and I thought I'd use the spare change and every so often it was accepting then kept trying to jam, so after a bit I thought best not run any more at that moment.

Papatron · 31/12/2020 00:52

@NowellSingWe

I think the self-service tills don't even take copper where we are! (They may be on card only now, in any case).

@Papatron That's exactly the kind of joke my DH would make...and the kind of username he'd have... Embrace change and make me a coffee love! Xmas Smile

@NowellSingWe I'm not your husband, honest. He sounds like a total legend though 👍🤣

@StealthPolarBear many post offices are within shops, but they still have paid post office staff - usage means they will stay. They will be missed when it's too late I fear.
