I have so much money and I don't know how to spend it

OK now I've drawn you in...
I have amassed a pile of copper and fives.probablt about a fiver in total (not putting my address so I don't get robbed).
I'm completely stuck on how to spend it. I had the bright idea of using it at a self service check out in a quiet time (so as not to annoy the cashier or others) but these are all card. You don't see charity boxes any more. I'm not prepared to go to the bank for this, and I don't think they'd thank me either :)
Before anyone starts, yes I do know there's a pandemic on and I do have other problems.

Why wouldn’t you just bag it up and pay it into the bank.
Certainly would never use one of those machines that count it for you

In my case because we no longer have any banks on my local shopping street and I would need to make a special trip into the town centre (as I rarely go in, even pre covid). The commission the supermarket coinstar machine takes on a couple of bags of coppers is less than I would pay in petrol and parking or bus fares

Tink1990 · 29/12/2020 13:12

My nan always has so much small change, we also use it in the self checkouts. Some are card only but most shops do appear to have cash and card ones as well. Co op, M&S, asda are the ones I am aware of (by me anyway!)

safariboot · 29/12/2020 13:13

Most if not all supermarkets I've been to take cash at the self checkout, albeit some on only half the machines.

Otherwise just take it through a regular checkout, it's only a fiver.

With the Coinstar machines, check the procedure. Some supermarkets you can use the voucher at the till which is convenient (but will a self checkout take it? Check first!). Others you end up having to exchange the voucher for cash at customer services so you probably get more bloody change back!

StealthPolarBear · 29/12/2020 13:13

Yes exactly

DD and I use coppers and 5ps for bets while playing card games.
Place them around on walls, post boxes etc on a walk and see if they've gone next time you pass by....ok that sounds a little desperate for entertainmentBlush well it cheers me up to find a 5p like a lucky sixpence on the pavement.

NowellSingWe · 29/12/2020 13:19

I think the self-service tills don't even take copper where we are! (They may be on card only now, in any case).

@Papatron That's exactly the kind of joke my DH would make...and the kind of username he'd have... Embrace change and make me a coffee love! Xmas Smile

CorianderQueen · 29/12/2020 13:24

If pubs are open they'll live it. Every bloody Friday we ran out of change.

Veiaola · 29/12/2020 13:32

Just take it to the bank, I do.

gannett · 29/12/2020 13:36

Most supermarkets near me have self-checkouts that can take both cash and card.

I grab a handful of these coins from a jar whenever I pop to the supermarket, shove them in the machine and pay the balance on card.

MrsBobDylan · 29/12/2020 13:42

2p machines would get my vote. I never gamble but I love pointlessly pushing 2ps into those machines!

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 29/12/2020 14:02

We have this - and we count it up when it's full and use it for a family outing. Last time it had about £100 in so it contributed to a trip to Manchester to visit Coronation Street 🙂 Ds's bank used to allow unlimited amounts of bagged up coins into children's savings account. Not sure what we'll do now he's turned 18...

London91 · 29/12/2020 14:03

@StealthPolarBear if you have a Metrobank near you they have the machines you can put them in and it'll give you a slip of paper and you can get the cash for it. You don't need to bank with them to use it. My local one isn't usually busy. Plus they take no commission from it. 😊

Sn0tnose · 29/12/2020 14:16

No point in collecting them, you only create the problem you're struggling with now.

We have a pee pot in the kitchen that all loose change gets chucked into. In December, DH bags it up, takes it to the supermarket and rarely comes home with less than £100. It pays for Christmas dinner.

ememem84 · 29/12/2020 14:20

amazing. i took a whole load of change into my local coop the other day when i went shopping. the checkout lady (who was supervising the self check outs) told me i couldn't use the coins. i asked why. and she said b"because". i just fed the machine.

£18 worth of goods and i paid for around £11 of it in coin.

Chimeraforce · 29/12/2020 14:22

If you use natwest they have indoor cashpoints with coin counter.
It prints a receipt which you take to the cashier either bank it or get cash.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 29/12/2020 14:27

Don't whatever you do take 30 quid's worth of stuff to a self-checkout at Tesco and tip a carrier bag full of small change into the coin receptacle thingy. Definitely don't do this during the evening rush when there's a long queue to use the self-service machines, containing lots of tired fed up people all watching you for the 8 WHOLE MINUTES it takes to count every single coin individually. The SHAME...........

1forAll74 · 29/12/2020 14:34

There used to be collecting boxes in my local shop, for the RNLB association, The local Homeless charity, and the local donkey sanctuary, I used to put all loose money in them all.

DS's godfather used to have a jar on his desk that he emptied the change in his pockets into every night. Every once in a while, he would pick out a few coins for parking.

When DS was in reception, his DGF offered him a 50% cut if he sorted the coins into coin bags to take to the bank. What his DGF didn't realise was that although he had cherry picked the pound coins from the top layer, underneath there was a buried treasure of £2, £1 and 50p coins. There was over £200 in total.

He looked a bit green when he realised he had just paid a 4 year old £100 to sort some coins, which equated to about the same hourly rate that he earnt as a media lawyer Grin, but he refused to go back on his word.

I use the contents of my coin jar as stocking fillers or hide them in Christmas gifts for the DC as an added bonus. It's become a bit of a running joke, looking for the hidden cash - £2 coins mixed in with chocolate coins, a bag of coins in the toe of a boot or the inner pocket of a bag, a Hannukah card with shekels left over from a work trip.

notangelinajolie · 29/12/2020 15:08

I'm way too Scrooge to be giving coinstar a percentage.
Just use the coins at the self serve check outs as part payment for your shop. Throw the cash in the tray thingy and it will knock the balance of your bill down. Then pay the remainder by card. Easy Grin

Don't forget to go to one that says cash payments 😉

StealthPolarBear · 29/12/2020 15:11

That is what I need to find

Our Tesco isn't enormous but has separate tills for scan as you shop and self service. I couldn't swear to it but I'm fairly sure that the self service ones accept coins as well as notes.
