I have so much money and I don't know how to spend it

OK now I've drawn you in...
I have amassed a pile of copper and fives.probablt about a fiver in total (not putting my address so I don't get robbed).
I'm completely stuck on how to spend it. I had the bright idea of using it at a self service check out in a quiet time (so as not to annoy the cashier or others) but these are all card. You don't see charity boxes any more. I'm not prepared to go to the bank for this, and I don't think they'd thank me either :)
Before anyone starts, yes I do know there's a pandemic on and I do have other problems.

I was about to say Metrobank. You don't need an account there, their machines give you the full value, and in my experience, the staff are great, even though they know I'm not one of their customers.

When I used to take bags of coins to the counter in my local bank, the tellers' looks could kill. They clearly hate it when people turn up with bags of coins

HeronLanyon · 29/12/2020 11:49

I had two boxes of bagged coins finally all ready to cash at bank and then Covid happened. My bank aren’t accepting bags of coins at the moment. Even ore Covid they had a limit of 7 bags (it might have been 10) per customer per day. Think business accounts had higher or no limit.
Saw news story a while ago that banks were short of coins as so few churning through the system.
I need to find a coinstar and deal with when out and about is more possible (tier 4 here).

@HaudMaDug

I once seen someone's floor laid with copper coins instead of tiles. Not sure how much £ worth would be needed to cover a decent area but it looked amazing. Been saving my coppers for this ever since. Some day I may own a piece of floor that I can cover.
I'm guessing more than £2.30 :) but I think I've seen that too and it does look good

@Papatron

Have you tried giving your pile of cash a big hug? I'm reading a self-help book at the moment and it says that I should always embrace change.

All now in the one bag so that's an improvement

HollowTalk · 29/12/2020 11:54

You could go to self-service at any supermarket and feed in the coins yourself.

StealthPolarBear · 29/12/2020 11:56

Hollow that's the thing I'm not sure about. All self service machines in coop are card only and I think the ones in tesco are the same.

One of mine. The other is more stuffed. Years of lazily putting coins in jars.
The envelope is euros and rupee. Blast from the past ! Grin

Bag it up in £1 chunks and take to the bank. They weigh it. Or drop it in a charity box.

@Papatron I laughed aloud ...

StealthPolarBear · 29/12/2020 12:00

I would put them in the bottom of an old sock and keep it by the side of the bed.

All the better for clocking burglars with.

StealthPolarBear · 29/12/2020 12:02

I'd pay the equivalent in parking

I take it to the bank- they have a counting machine- you pay straight into your account, doesn't hold up staff, no way would I pay comission.

thriftyhen · 29/12/2020 12:06

Just take it to the bank and pay it into your account. They will give you money bags, if you don't have any.

Soutiner · 29/12/2020 12:07

Save the pennies and use the remainder to buy a tube of superglue.

Go for an evening stroll and superglue the pennies to the pavement.

sansou · 29/12/2020 12:07

This has inspired me! Grin I have 2 bags of foreign currency coins from various holidays and work trips over the last 20 yrs which I have handed over to DS(17) and told him he can have whatever it's worth if he can sell it on one of the sites that buy such coins. (I would be amazed if it's more than £20!)

tldr · 29/12/2020 12:07

Don’t use a coin star, they take 7% !

I use self-service machines. Most of them you can shovel your coins in then pay the remainder or card.

StealthPolarBear · 29/12/2020 12:09

I'm not making a special trip to the bank for £2 people! I need to keep an eye out for self service machines that take cash

Have you got any local charity shops? I'm certain they'll have a collecting box on their counter and will also be able to gift aid it - adding another 25%.
