I have so much money and I don't know how to spend it

OK now I've drawn you in...
I have amassed a pile of copper and fives.probablt about a fiver in total (not putting my address so I don't get robbed).
I'm completely stuck on how to spend it. I had the bright idea of using it at a self service check out in a quiet time (so as not to annoy the cashier or others) but these are all card. You don't see charity boxes any more. I'm not prepared to go to the bank for this, and I don't think they'd thank me either :)
Before anyone starts, yes I do know there's a pandemic on and I do have other problems.

@Papatron

Have you tried giving your pile of cash a big hug? I'm reading a self-help book at the moment and it says that I should always embrace change.
Groan.

Self service machines all seem to be card only in the shops I go in. Bank is in town and I don't go in at the moment (and when we used to, it was usually on a Sunday)

The little Sainsburys in my local train station used to have self service machines that had a bucket thing, instead of slots for coins.

I used to regularly use these machines towards the end of the month for work lunch, when I was a lot younger and a lot poorer! Not sure if these are thing now. Bottle of wine if they are?

StealthPolarBear · 29/12/2020 11:24

Yeah that's what I want! I know exactly the bucket thing you mean. Maybe it's scan as you shop that's card only. I will have another look at self service next time I'm in.

I give them to DS1 (4.5) for his piggy bank when he's been helpful and "done the washing up for me"
He thinks he's rich Smile He has £3 something, €2 and a coin I think might be from Eastern Europe

SadderThanEeyore · 29/12/2020 11:27

Just take it to the post office 🤷‍♀️

SonjaMorgan · 29/12/2020 11:28

Those supermarket coin machines take a high percentage. My local HSBC has a free to use one in branch but you need an HSBC account to use it. Maybe other banks have similar.

I would bag it up and take it to the seaside. I love the 2p machines.

TrickyD · 29/12/2020 11:31

Our NatWest bank has a machine where you pour the lot in. It sorts the different coins out and credits them to your account, no commission. Be careful not to include buttons, I caused trouble by doing this, though the staff were nice about it.

Cailleach · 29/12/2020 11:32

The self service tills at my local ASDA allow you to pay part in cash and part by card.

I shop at quiet times so I take about a quid in coppers / fives each trip, chuck it in and pay the rest by debit card.

Orf1abc · 29/12/2020 11:32

I have the same problem OP, except I've got over £500! I normally bag them up once a year and take them to the bank, but all the banks around me have shut down and the post office only takes two bags at a time. Mine is sat in a corner gathering much dust (can't pick the bag up to move it!).

StealthPolarBear · 29/12/2020 11:33

Well if you've got all that you won't mind a little more will you... Where did you say you lived? :o

@Oliversmumsarmy

Why wouldn’t you just bag it up and pay it into the bank. Certainly would never use one of those machines that count it for you

Or just take a handful when you go shopping and pay it into the self service machine.

We always have a jar of change on the go. Every so often we make up the bags for the bank. Dp is the worst with change. He leaves it in piles around the house.
Dc once went through all his hiding places and made up over £70 to bank

The last time I walked past a bank there was a queue of 15 people out the door.

I never went pre pandemic, who would go now!

StealthPolarBear · 29/12/2020 11:34

Yes. I used to travel with work and on the odd time I did need to go to a bank I used to arrange it between meetings in whatever city I was in. Here it would be a special hour long round trip including paying for parking.

I got my kids to sort them into bags and took the bags to the bank, where they weighed them and paid the money into my account.

MaryLeeOnHigh · 29/12/2020 11:42

Male members of my family have the habit of leaving coins all over the place, so I tend to shove them in a jar when I see them. Last time I took a batch to a Coinstar machine, I ended up with around £30 so it was definitely worth doing. I kept it all, I felt it was a just reward for my efforts!

28andold · 29/12/2020 11:44

Give it to me please. Thanks

Labobo · 29/12/2020 11:44

Metrobanks have a coin machine that charges no commission. Last time we took a penny jar in there, it was £12. I gave DC each £4 and kept £4 for myself, then parked myself in Pret (99p filter coffee) with a new notebook (Tyger £2 and pen £1) and happily scribbled and doodled away while DC went off to spend their money together.

HaudMaDug · 29/12/2020 11:45

I once seen someone's floor laid with copper coins instead of tiles. Not sure how much £ worth would be needed to cover a decent area but it looked amazing. Been saving my coppers for this ever since.
Some day I may own a piece of floor that I can cover.

itsgettingweird · 29/12/2020 11:46

I use to do this.

My bank lets you pay them direct to account.

I collected mine for a year and then laid it into my account and gave equivalent to ds to spend whilst on holiday.

But not having cash this year, holiday cancelled and no plans to travel this year I don't have many.

I'd use coin star this year if I did have enough and get a coffee and mag. But to take out as T4 Grin

Persipan · 29/12/2020 11:47

I know you said you don't want to go to the bank, but some banks have change-counting machines in the branch (like the coinstar ones but no commission and it goes straight into your account), which you may feel okay to use? Worth checking. HSBC often have them, dunno about others.

BlackForestCake · 29/12/2020 11:48

@Downunderduchess

Do you pass any homeless people on your way to the shops etc.? You could give it to them.
Thus passing your problem onto someone else who already has problems.
StealthPolarBear · 29/12/2020 11:49

Just counted it and it a pathetic £2.30! I'm not going to get rich with this any time soon. That didn't include various tens and twenties that will go into the breakfast club fund.
