Anyone on the run from Verbier? Want to post a real-time outlaw story?

I’m not much for shock and horror at rule breakers because... people. But the story of 250+ British tourists on the run from being quarantined in Verbier has rather piqued my interest. www.theguardian.com/world/2020/dec/27/hundreds-uk-tourists-flee-covid-quarantine-swiss-ski-resort-verbier?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

I’m guessing that the overlap of mumsnet posters and ski tourists is not insignificant: anyone want to tell us how your daring escape is going? And why you thought it was okay to fly to Switzerland for two weeks skiing in the middle of a pandemic?

There's nowhere left that they can ski: unless they go off piste and are willing to do the long slog uphill!

OverTheRainbow88 · 28/12/2020 10:52

Disgraceful, often ashamed to be British

Rae36 · 28/12/2020 10:57

Our friends are there because they couldn't get their money back. The British were allowing planes to take off, the Swiss were allowing them to land, the Swiss hotels and ski centres were allowing them to arrive, stay and ski. Until it was too late. If they could have got their money back they would. What a mess.

I'm very interested to hear the story from the side of the skiers, it certainly sounds quite the dramatic escape

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 28/12/2020 11:04

I’d like to hear as well

I doubt anyone will come on though....they will open themselves up to a pile on

praepondero · 28/12/2020 11:07

To everyone who is moaning about the unfairness of it all, the new variant of C19 was sequenced last week, Swiss and other ski-countries had accepted the risk of the good-old-variant but had to re-calibrate their risk response in the view of the new variant prevalent in SE England (more ski-tourists in UK than South-Africa and all that).
People do not seem to understand exponential growth Angry.

You know what a dramatic escape is? It’s coming out of hospital having nearly died of COVID and thanking your lucky stars that you are still alive. It’s having watched others lose their lives when you were still battling. That’s the important story. That’s my story.

My contempt for these people knows no bounds. I could not remain friends with someone who demonstrated so clearly that they only care for themselves. They deserve public humiliation and rejection. I hope they get it.

DecemberDiana · 28/12/2020 11:12

Other Alpine countries have not " accepted the risk.." They haven't opened lifts except Austria where you have to be to be local.

notimagain · 28/12/2020 11:15

they will open themselves up to a pile on

and with justification....lets not start branding this as Great Escape 2...

Splodgetastic · 28/12/2020 11:21

Chalet in Verbier is definitely on my list of things to acquire.

Salapandas · 28/12/2020 11:23

I bed it's mostly doctors - all our doctor friends go to Verbier.

And they are on the run because they've all just had their leave cancelled, at least many of the London ones have anyway.

PicsInRed · 28/12/2020 11:25

This fuckery is precisely why the borders needed to be closed. Oh well, here comes March again.

cushioncovers · 28/12/2020 11:26

Sorry but I want to vent. Those tourists are irresponsible cheeky fuckers. How dare they think quarantine rules don't apply to them. It's a risk anyone takes when they go on holiday at the moment. Angry

Salapandas · 28/12/2020 11:28

They won't be able to ski - they won't be able to get ski passes or will have had them cancelled, they will be coming home.

Verbier authorities are not stupid - they will have a list of names.

CallmeAngelGabriel · 28/12/2020 11:30

@DecemberDiana

I'll always think of it as the skiers' disease.
Hmm
Witchend · 28/12/2020 11:42

Well, we slipped out of the hotel during their live entertainment. We made sure everyone saw us by being part of the act, and arranged our act so it took us offstage at the end. There were soldiers at the main doors, so we went out of the kitchen exit, and hastened down the road.
We realised fairly quickly that we were going to be followed, when we saw a nunnery. We explained our predicament to them (I happened to know the Mother Abbess well) and they told us to come in. We hid in the graveyard while they searched.
Eventually we thought we were safe, but then a young lad came back. Dh recognised him, and thought he would appeal to him to pretend he hadn't see us. It was a pretty stupid idea as he'd given no sign he'd seen us, and then the little idiot rushed off shouting that he'd seen us.
We hot footed it out of there, and towards the mountains where we climbed over them singing lustily all the way.
And now we're just catching the ferry back to England.

That do you?

DecemberDiana · 28/12/2020 11:44

I was hoping more for The Scarlet Pimpernel.

Dowser · 28/12/2020 11:51

@rae36
But they can only infect someone if they have covid
They may be fit hale and hearty

I’m pretty sure airlines insist on masks at all times and the air is filtered making planes the safest of public transport

Witchend · 28/12/2020 12:09

@DecemberDiana

We were sitting in our hotel room, feeling doomed. There was nothing to do except watch TV and order food. This wasn't the skiing holiday we'd been expecting and I could see our fate written on the others' faces. They slumped on their beds sipping drinks and arguing about the level of the air conditioning.
Then there was a bang at the window. We all jumped. We were three storeys up! I thought it was a bird, but then we heard distinct knocking.
I opened the curtains and there was a tall man, wearing a dark suit and bow tie, and a dark black bandana over his face.
"Hurry up and let me in!" he called.
I opened the window. "James Bond, I presume?" I said in what was meant to be a casual voice.
"No, madam," he replied in a deep voice. "You are not to know who I am."

He outlined his daring plan to us. We dressed in the outfits of the hotel staff and he lead us down through what felt like acres of corridors until we came to the basement.
In the basement he uncovered a trapdoor which lead directly to the airport.
At the airport we turned to thank the gentleman that had brought us out from our nightmare. But he had vanished. However when I emptied my pocket when I got home I found a small sketch of a little red flower, which I knew hadn't been there before.

DecemberDiana · 28/12/2020 12:10

That's the one!

@NOTANUM big difference between people travelling during the summer when Covid rates were in single figures, and quarantine rules were set for 20 cases per 100,000. Cases in some places are now over 1,000 per 100,000 and tier 4 lockdown in place . Massive difference in the two situations.

PhilODox · 28/12/2020 12:59

Aw, I thought this was going to be about a creative writing website that had imploded over the festive season, as websites are wont to do when tempers are frayed and moderators are on holiday... Wink

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 28/12/2020 12:59

Wouldnt argue with that

Im quite embarrassed by the whole debacle....and im not even there 😀

Foxglovii · 28/12/2020 13:00

Swiss ski resorts are a metalling pit right now. Anybody who could afford to go and was selfish - not only from the U.K. - has gone. EU countries should make sure to impose quarantine of 10 days on every single EU resident upon crossing the border into the EU from Switzerland. And they should be charged for the stay wherever they quarantine.

We have friends who have gone to Switzerland to meet up with family members from other EU countries - all sharing the same chalet. It's utterly ridiculous, but because they're mega wealthy, apparently it's ok. Apparently the rich neither use the NHS, nor do they transmit viruses to anybody else, not even their staff.

Every single non-Swiss person there made a choice that either money or their holiday was more important than not taking the risk of transmitting the virus.

And the Swiss can sleep safely knowing that their government cared more about wealthy foreigners having their jollies than it did about public health.
