With DS1's dyslexia and dyspraxia, the methodology of timestables are a moot point Grin

ISaySteadyOn · 02/01/2021 21:06

That's interesting, @BogRollBOGOF. My dyspraxic self loved the clear structure of the times tables. I also loved, and still doBlush, dancing about the house chanting them.

wanderings · 02/01/2021 21:19

I wish I could believe that the government exaggerated the "new, highly transmissible strain"; because now they've had so many organisations turning on them, because of it; most recently, the teaching unions. It's a shame that our children and their parents who have to work are now collateral damage. Are we going to get the U-turn, and bribed scientist to assure the public "actually, the new strain is not as bad as we said..."

And are the parents who are being forced to look after their children (because the schools are closed) and not able to work going to take them on protest marches? Can somebody show the fucking government that they are putting their taxpaying citizens in an IMPOSSIBLE position?? And can Saint fucking Boris just RESIGN????

AcornAutumn · 02/01/2021 21:22

wanderings "And can Saint fucking Boris just RESIGN????"

Be careful what you wish for. I fear he will resign, Wancock will take over and it will be like France or Spain - "papers please" for every trip outside the house, children not permitted outdoors.

bakingcupcakes · 02/01/2021 21:22

If I'm being honest we didn't do any home schooling after Easter. We read a lot but that was it. DS was so un-cooperative and I was always shouting/telling him off. It made the atmosphere awful especially as it's just us. I feel a bit guilty when I think about it too much. There was no excuse not to do it as I was furloughed. I think it's unlikely I'll be furloughed this time ever again so DS will have to attend under key worker rules if they close schools. He absolutely hates school so he desperately wants it to be like March again. I just want to go to work!

wanderings · 02/01/2021 21:25

@AcornAutumn Good point, I suppose the idiot Saint Boris is the one person that has stopped the country descending to that level of authoritarianism. But he is an embarrassment to the nation, and sooner or later his own party are going to have him for dinner.

Mrsfrumble · 02/01/2021 21:33

Interesting @ISaySteadyOn and @BogRollBOGOF. DS won’t learn his times tables by rote because “then I can’t work them out in my head and where’s the fun in that?” ConfusedConfused
To be fair, he’s pretty fast in his head, but I’m still glad he missed the y4 test last year because he might well have failed.

I’m at the acceptance / resignation stage now. I’m going to have to do my best with homeschool whether I like it or not (although I’m still emailing school to tell them to lower their expectations). I’ve ordered new headphones for the children so they can work at the same table and not disturb each other, and have done a massive Ocado offer so that we have enough food for all 4 of us at home all day.

I have just had to sit and cuddle my tearful 17 dsd... Until she fell asleep, because uncertainty about school is making her fight against her anorexia harder.
She feels everything is slipping out of control and there is no structure so no eating again will give her some control.
I hate decking covid, I am so tired of being constantly positive.. For my patients, for my dds, (((for my family.

Thanks for the times table tips. DH has a PhD in maths so I guess I should believe him too! Grin

BogRollBOGOF · 02/01/2021 23:33

DH has a technical PhD and he's pretty sharp on maths... that's where DS1 gets it from (apart from timestables). He learned things one way, I learned things another and DS1 is learning a different way again Grin

Other than sport, we're quite a compatible team across different subjects with different strengths.

In petty consolations it was good that DS1 skipped the timestables and DS2 SATs.
It was the stress of DS1's SATs because he had interventions to plug the gaps in his skills, that tripped his behaviour beyond normal range and lead to me getting a referral.

I'm breaking my usual reticence to mix work and SM here, but do reach our to Beat or encourage her to. There are support and advice groups for carers as well as patients and also moderated group chat for teens and so on. There's little they can "do" but some find it very helpful just to realise that others are going through the same. Those chats happen same time each day, so it can provide a bit of structure if nothing else. And the helpline will be able to provide good advice about where to seek more concrete help or how to approach things with NHS services if they're being a bit slow.

Hope you don't mind me sticking my oar in.

Very comforting!

I'm getting angry this morning. Surely the government already made their decision last week about which schools should shut? That was based on data and 'the science'* so why are people clamouring for policy change because they just want schools closed? Because Steve and Debbie think schools closing is a good thing we need to demand it happens? Much that I think the government have been awful, surely if youve aligned with the 'follow the science' rhetoric then you can't just turn around and demand the opposite?

*Although in my line of work I'm very aware that this is hugely problematic in terms of quality of data inputting, human error and human interpretation!

Theredjellybean · 03/01/2021 07:35

Thankyou... I do belong to a beat support forum.
They are lovely people and I also do peer support for another mother.. Well I guess we support each other.
Its the relentlessnrss of it all... The anorexia and covid...

Seriouslymole · 03/01/2021 08:27

This mis-reporting of numbers of children in hospital should be punishable with imprisonment. Don't ramp up the fear factor just to suit your own agenda - arggggh!

I woke early again today and the first thing on my mind was bloody Covid and the fact that my child's school has mandated mask-wearing at all times. I've composed an email. I feel sure that it won't make a sod of difference.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 03/01/2021 08:35

I had a thought about the teachers nor turning up tomorrow. It's been asked "over there" a few times if they will still get paid and the answer has been "yes! Will they will still be working doing keyworker or remote learning" but surely that only applies if they all walk out? Or a significant amount.
Fir instance, if Mrs A Mr B and Miss C don't turn up, but the school can be staffed with Mr x, Miss Y and Miss Z, then will A, B and C still get paid?

Also for refusal to work under section 44, don't they have to evidence that the risk assessment is unsound?

God that paeds admissions stuff last night was bonkers. There was some grim mudslinging towards MNHQ and one mod in particular, disgusting behaviour from (apparently) adults.

I shall say my two pence here (where it is safe). I judge any HCP who posts ranting/alarmist/emotional comments or videos (or even, fuck me, a tiktok) on the Internet. It's unprofessional and feeds hysteria. And yes, I know nurses and senior managers who do it, and I tell them (gently and with some loving humour) that I think less of them when they do it.

I've worked through strike action from a different union. If numbers are few enough for SLT to pick up the slack, they tend to. Closing a whole secondary for a handful of staff is poor PR so although they're not supposed to do it, they do. They don't tend to ask regular classroom staff to as it undermines union relationships.

Where a school hasn't been able to function (often by support rather than teaching unions) it's like an INSET day of cracking on with your work but no agenda.

DS1 was affected by industrial action which closed yR most heavily which was how I ended up teaching y9 with a 5 year old up my dress. DH was abroad. I didn't know anyone else in his school community. No local family. Fortunately it fell on my y13 gained time/ lunch which was enough to drive home, get chips and get him to my classroom.

He's not had much stability through schooling.
YR strikes/ half day closures
Y1 job share change partway through year
Y2 same teacher all year, but a one-year wonder on secondment
Y3 mat leave partway through year
Y4 Covid
Y5 got lucky so far...

Just leaving this one here Grin
Grin Well I hope they’re all having a nice chat.

That does remind me though, the arrow/directional floor stickers can’t sod off soon enough as far as I’m concerned. I hate being shunted around by signage.
