Random question, they are citing not working under health and safety legislation. Surely if the schools have an agreed risk assessment in place then they don't have a leg to stand on?

OP posts:
LivinLaVidaLoki · 02/01/2021 16:40

Would they not have to demonstrate that the risk assessment is unsound?

I don’t know enough about health and safety legislation, but I do know that there isn’t a right to be totally safe at work - if there were, construction sites couldn’t operate as there’s an unavoidable basic level of risk. You have to do a risk assessment and make sure all appropriate mitigation is in place, and then you can crack on.

Maybe a stupid question but why don't teachers have ppe. Stick a mask on and get on with it that's what care homes and nhs are doing . Why can't they?

The argument is that you can't teach effectively in a mask. (Which I agree with, tbf.) However you could stick on a visor instead, and wear gloves, keep a distance, though not 2m as most classrooms won't allow for it.
GalesThisMorning · 02/01/2021 16:57

@SirSamuelVimes a visor and gloves without 2m distancing is pretty useless, to be fair

I agree, but there's been a lot of "pantomime safety" going on during this while thing, so why not add some more!

GalesThisMorning · 02/01/2021 17:00

I guess cuz it doesn't work?

ISaySteadyOn · 02/01/2021 17:01

I think the psychological effects of all of these measures on children's mental health should also be considered.

Weedsnseeds1 · 02/01/2021 17:03

I think there have been several cases where Muslim teachers have been sacked for wearing a face veil? Would masks be classified as the same barrier to teaching?

LivinLaVidaLoki · 02/01/2021 17:03

And why do they all still keep on that the infection rates are the highest they have ever been? We do not know this at all, as for the first few months we only tested due to clinical need. There were estimated around 100k cases a day in April.

And the whole "I am a teacher why should I die for your kids" the evidence overwhelmingly indicates that unless you are elderly or ecv the chances of you dying are almost non existent. And if you are elderly or ecv then why the fuck are you at work? I don't get it.

OP posts:
Weedsnseeds1 · 02/01/2021 17:12

Would "i am a doctor, why should I die for your parents?" or "I am a bus driver, ewhy should I die so you can got to work?" be considered as valid arguments?
Nothing to do with teachers, but "I and my family didn't cause this, we are vegan" has been my favourite comment recently Smile

SirSamuelVimes · 02/01/2021 17:12

I don't think much of it works. Masks have been proven not to work, we still have to wear them to go in a shop.

I'd be curious to know how teachers' conditions re. Covid safety compare to a factory line worker, or Amazon warehouse employees. Not that it should be a race to the bottom but if the unions are going to pursue the legal line, what is "safe" in law, Covid wise?

Weedsnseeds1 · 02/01/2021 17:19

Sirsamuelvimes in food factories, masks are worn, temperatures taken, surfaces sanitised, social distancing in canteens, door handles with sanitiser reservoirs, turnstiles that are sanitiser operated, hand washing even more than usual, walls, floors, ceilings jet washed daily (in certain sectors e.g. meat). All or combinations of these precautions.
There have still been huge numbers of outbreaks. In the summer it was mainly the chilled factories, now its winter, the ambient ones are having outbreaks too.
So yes, I agree, the recommended measures don't seem effective.

AaahWoof · 02/01/2021 17:19

Gently sounded the kids out that schools might be messed up again (thankfully we have Inset on Monday anyway) and DD1's comment was - that's fine, if it's snowing we can go sledging instead.

Orangeblossom77777 · 02/01/2021 17:21

I notice that dad poster we thought was from the unions back in the summer is back on there going on about children and covid again.

Interesting this is at the same time as the unions are calling for the schools to shut. MN keep deleting the posts but they keep popping up again.

Orangeblossom77777 · 02/01/2021 17:22

I did wonder if snow might close the schools anyway

LivinLaVidaLoki · 02/01/2021 17:25

Random and not related to schools but if the figures shot up from the 30th Dec, day 7 is on average when people who need hospitalisation end up in hospital so the number of people in hospital in the next week or so should be quite interesting.

Here's the statement from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health refuting the "wards full of children with covid" hyperbole.

AaahWoof · 02/01/2021 17:29

We have also had from DD1... "I'm only quiet when I'm playing Roblox, if you take the time limit on it off I'll be quiet all day so you can work"

The conniving little bugger!

LivinLaVidaLoki · 02/01/2021 17:30

That's interesting @TabbyStar

OP posts:
Mrsfrumble · 02/01/2021 17:38

Wow, thanks for finding and posting that @TabbyStar. I can’t believe people are making these stories up and spreading them.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 02/01/2021 17:43

Though if you posted that anywhere else here it would be dismissed as "burying the truth".
Odd that, considering we are the ones usually being labelled conspiracy theorists 🤔

Kids are in the back garden having a snowball fight - I've got a lump in my throat watching them actually have a childhood moment - as they've lost so much over the last year.

GalesThisMorning · 02/01/2021 18:07

@SirSamuelVimes I would imagine that factory workers are working in conditions that are less safe than teachers, sadly. I would also imagine that infected children could spread a virus through a community more rapidly than factory workers.

Just my guess though.
