We have lots of snow here pics on FB of kids on sleds everywhere no location police patrols have no chance of catching them. So glad they're having fun

LivinLaVidaLoki · 31/12/2020 12:55

@justasking111 I've seen that.
Also this, which makes me irrationally cross.

OH FFS

Iheartmysmart · 31/12/2020 13:01

@LivinLaVidaLoki Hadn’t seen that one! Am also irrationally pissed off with it.

Tier 4 here from last night and I’ve not noticed it being any quieter out. Road outside is busy as usual and lots of people wandering around the lake. Think everyone has just had enough now.

GarlandaChynoweth · 31/12/2020 13:09

So sorry for all in areas with further school closures Flowers. We're now tier 3 but my DC are primary so back on Tuesday. I don't think I realised what a state I'd got myself into over it until the announcement came yesterday and I found myself trembling.

Enjoyed drinks in a friend's garden under many blankets and hot water bottles last night. Stuck it out until an hour before it became illegal (were tier 2 until midnight) and it was surprisingly ok. Unfortunately reminded that one friend in particular is quite dementory with apparently no ability to think independently or critically but nonetheless it was a lovely piece of near normality. Today of course it's against the rules for us to meet in gardens Hmm

TabbyStar · 31/12/2020 13:18

Don’t hospitals always transfer patients anyway? I used to be NHS admin many moons ago and shared an office with the bed manager who was always ringing around trying to get patients into another hospital when ours was full. Not great in a pandemic but it’s hardly a new practice.

There's was a doctor in London or the SE on Twitter saying that he couldn't get a patient down the corridor for a CT scan so it was unlikely they'd be transferred to Leeds!

justasking111 · 31/12/2020 13:35

To be fair Leeds has been hammered only in the last week have figures fallen. Those staff are dead on their feet they fought whilst London was okay. How much more can we ask of them

Aztectrousers · 31/12/2020 13:41

I really don’t know why I’m on Facebook. It annoys me at the best of times but if I see one more stay safe, stop at home, be grateful for what you have sanctimonious bollocks I’ll just vomit.

Iheartmysmart · 31/12/2020 13:52

Ugh stay safe! I hate that phrase. We had an email sent round before our virtual Christmas party asking us to be very careful and stay safe while cutting up our fruit for the cocktail making session and to buy pre-cut if at all possible! Bearing in mind that on a usual Christmas party there is at least one person who has to be put to bed before dinner and someone fell off the coach at the last one it seemed a bit ridiculous.

Alltherum · 31/12/2020 13:54

I haven’t posted before but have been interested in the views here. The noise on other areas of MN at the moment is deafening, you’re right. I struggle with my feelings about the lockdown debate but what I keep coming back to is that if I go around meeting friends in groups, as I saw loads doing yesterday at an NT place we went to, aren’t I just helping to prolong the restrictions and thus the suffering of all those struggling to cope - families in tiny flats, the lonely and disadvantaged. I have to admit part of me feels like I’ve missed a trick by sticking to the guidelines because it doesn’t seem like many others are bothering. There’s nothing like 2020 for making you question your own judgement, is there.

TabbyStar · 31/12/2020 14:00

Grin We had a work awayday once with two torn muscles with people unable to walk and a trip to A&E. There was a memorable Christmas party at another organisation where someone got caught on CCTV getting a BJ in the lift!

Iheartmysmart · 31/12/2020 14:03

That’s very funny Tabby! I remember the first one I went to after returning from maternity leave. I pinched the CEOs sparkling wine, lost my shoes and slid down the side of the taxi! Oh and we needed a paramedic for one of the sales team. We are now banned from that particular venue.

TabbyStar · 31/12/2020 14:09

Grin I've been to some cracking Christmas parties over the years. When I worked in London there'd be a party every night somewhere. And conferences. I'm too old now for that kind of thing (and I'm self-employed!) but funny memories.

SirSamuelVimes · 31/12/2020 14:24

I had to nip I to my small town centre today to sort out a repeat prescription. We went to 3 last night. No quieter today than other days recently. Saw a group of about half a dozen adults gathered round a car boot with glasses of champagne in their hands, looked to be about to set off on a walk along the river bank. Two bus drivers on their break stood having a chat & a cigarette, no masks, stood at a natural 1m ish distance. I really think lockdown fatigue has set in here, I can see a lot of quiet rule bending going on.

DominaShantotto · 31/12/2020 14:40

Just had our uni update. Commuter students basically banned from the premises unless you're a listed course allowed to return early and even then we'd prefer it if you didn't.

So I'm paying 9k a year - to sit and google my fucking arse through whatever journal articles I can get my hands on to submit assessed assignments - against others who ARE allowed to access the physical library - that's not a level playing field either - none of this shit show is.

I am very very much No Longer OK mentally - I'd drop the year but I need the next loan instalment to pay bills. I have gone from being mentally so stable and upbeat that I was pulling straight firsts in all my assignments, coming off the low dose of anti depressants I'd been on for years, sleeping well, walking lots and loving studying and working fucking hard - but a bit worried about what seemed to be kicking off in China back in January 2020... to being a wreck with fuck all physical mobility, with anxiety so bad I physically shake, hit sensory overload really easily, get so distressed dreading the next announcements that I struggle to swallow physically and stammer when really wound up, and on so many antidepressants they won't give me any more - and drinking far too much - going into January 2021. I am really fucking ill as a result of Covid - and not from the bloody virus. But I don't matter.

Oh yeah and we are "expected" to have had two negative test results to be allowed to return to uni - for expected read what you will.

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 31/12/2020 14:51

Oh, @DominaShantotto Flowers. That’s just shit. Have you asked what arrangements they’re making for students to access library materials? It’s just not acceptable to charge £9K a year for Google.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 31/12/2020 14:58

Our local police have now twice found a reason to shoehorn "remember you should stay at home, travel for essential reasons only" on their Facebook page.
I so so badly want to comment that that is contrary to the government guidance which states that:
"you live in Tier 4 you must not leave or be outside of your home or garden except where you have a ‘reasonable excuse’. A reasonable excuse includes:

Work and volunteering

You can leave home for work purposes, where your place of work remains open and where you cannot work from home, including if your job involves working in other people’s homes. You can also leave home to provide voluntary or charitable services.

Essential activities

You can leave home to buy things at shops or obtain services from a business which is permitted to open in your Tier 4 area, but you should stay local. For instance you can leave home to buy food or medicine, or to collect any items – including food or drink – ordered through click-and-collect or as a takeaway, to obtain or deposit money (for example, from a bank or post office), or to access critical public services (see section below).

Fulfilling legal obligations

You may also leave home to fulfil legal obligations, or to carry out activities related to buying, selling, letting or renting a residential property, or where it is reasonably necessary for voting in an election or referendum.

Education and childcare

You can leave home for education related to the formal curriculum or training, registered childcare, under-18 sport and physical activity, and supervised activities for children that are necessary to allow parents/carers to work, seek work, or undertake education or training. Parents can still take their children to school, and people can continue existing arrangements for contact between parents and children where they live apart. This includeschildcare bubbles.

Meeting others and care

1 in 3 people who have coronavirus have no symptoms and will be spreading it without realising it.

You can leave home to visit people in yoursupport bubble, or to provide informal childcare for children aged 13 and under as part of achildcare bubble, to provide care for vulnerable people, to provide emergency assistance, attend a support group (of up to 15 people), or for respite care where that care is being provided to a vulnerable person or a person with a disability, or is a short break in respect of a looked after child.

Exercise and recreation

People can also exercise outdoors or visit some public outdoor places, such as parks, the countryside accessible to the public, public gardens or outdoor sports facilities. You can continue to do unlimited exercise alone, or in a public outdoor place with your household, support bubble, or with one other person if you maintain social distancing. You should follow theguidance on meeting others safely.

Medical reasons, harm and compassionate visits

You can leave home for a medical reason, including to get a COVID-19 test, for medical appointments and emergencies, to be with someone who is giving birth, to avoid injury or illness or to escape risk of harm (such as domestic abuse),or for animal welfare reasons – such as to attend veterinary services for advice or treatment.

You can also leave home to visit someone who is dying or someone in a care home (if permitted undercare home guidance), hospice, or hospital, or to accompany them to a medical appointment.

If you are planning to visit, or accompany someone to, a care home, hospice, hospital or other healthcare setting, you should check that this is permitted by the facility.

Communal worship and life events

You can leave home to attend or visit:

a place of worship for communal worshipa funeral or event related to a deatha burial ground or a remembrance gardena wedding ceremony

However, weddings, funerals and religious, belief-based or commemorative events linked to someone’s death are all subject to limits on the numbers that can attend (see below).

Meeting others safely

In general, you must not meet socially or carry out any activities with another person. However, you can exercise or meet in a public outdoor place with people you live with, your support bubble (or as part of a childcare bubble), or with one other person.

You should minimise time spent outside your home. When around other people, stay 2 metres apart from anyone not in your household – meaning the people you live with – or yoursupport bubble. Where this is not possible, stay 1 metre apart with extra precautions (for example, wearing a face covering).

You must not meet socially indoors with family or friends unless they are part of your household or support bubble.

You can exercise or visit a public outdoor place:

by yourselfwith the people you live withwith your support bubbleor, when on your own, with 1 person from another household

Children under 5, and up to 2 carers for a person with a disability who needs continuous care are not counted towards the outdoors gatherings limit.

Public outdoor places include:

parks, beaches, countryside accessible to the public, forestspublic gardens (whether or not you pay to enter them)allotmentsthe grounds of a heritage siteoutdoor sports courts and facilitiesplaygrounds

You cannot meet people in a private garden, unless you live with them or have formed a support bubble with them.

You must wear a face covering in many indoor settings, such as shops or places of worship where these remain open, and on public transport, unless you are exempt. This is the law.Read guidance on face coverings.

Support and childcare bubbles

There is separate guidance forsupport bubblesandchildcare bubblesacross all tiers. You can form a support bubble with another household if any of the following apply to you:

you are the only adult in your household (any other members of the household having been under 18 on 12 June 2020), or are an under 18 year old living without any adultsyou live with someone with a disability who requires continuous care and there is no other adult living in the householdyou live with a child under 1, or who was under 1 on 2 December 2020you live with a child under 5, or who was under 5 on 2 December 2020, who has a disability and requires continuous care

You may need to change your support bubble if your circumstances change. Find out more aboutchanging your support bubble.

You are permitted to leave your home to visit your support bubble (and to stay overnight with them). However, if you form a support bubble, it is best if this is with a household who live locally. This will help prevent the virus spreading from an area where more people are infected"

So basically if I want to go for a walk or visit a business or attraction that's open, or meet another person outdoors I can. I should just try and stay local.

I have to admit part of me feels like I’ve missed a trick by sticking to the guidelines because it doesn’t seem like many others are bothering.

I haven't broken a single guideline or rule.

Though it often feel like we might be the only ones and people who make the most noise about rules or want more usually for other people seem to be first to bend or break a few sometimes with good reasons sometimes not.

There was supposed to be so many things happening for us in 20202- me the kids DH and obviously they didn't and may never be possible to do for us again - yet we're doing well compared to many.

I really hope they get the vaccine program up and running so by spring/easter lockdowns will be a thing of the past and they don't fuck it up - as it's so hard to stay postive and upbeat and things will be better for the kids. Though we are cooking on the fire pit and having some very small fountain fireworks for new year.

MercyBooth · 31/12/2020 15:29

I predict the benefit scrounger rhetoric will be ramped up again when it comes to paying for all this.

@NastyBlouse
I have respect for Van Tam He comes across as an honest man with integrity. Said rules applied to everyone post Cummings debacle unlike Chris "i dont get involved in politics" Whitty.

@LivinLaVidaLoki Lawyer Adam Wagner has already had to correct the Rutland force on Twitter on the difference between guidance and law.

Did anyone else see the comment (not sure if it was verbal or written) by Van Tam yesterday saying "people shouldn't think that once they have the vaccine they can get back to normal - they can't. Social distancing and other precautions will need to remain for the foreseeable future" . Suspect that it has been squashed to avoid everyone saying 'whats the point in vaccines'.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 31/12/2020 15:38

against others who ARE allowed to access the physical library

Have you contacted the actual university libaray - 20 years ago we could get digital access to journals via the libaray and there may be some mechanisim to post out books. If not it might be worth rasing it with the course leader - pointing out that accessing materials is impossible due to lack of access to campus see if they have solutions or any plans for mitigation.

What he said yesterday was once you've had the vaccine you can't go straight out and act with abandon as they're not sure what the vaccine effect on transmission is. He was very clear that once the vaccine starts taking effect non pharmaceutical intervention will become personal choice. People should stick to handwashing etc but that's just good practice. He didn't say sd will be with us for the foreseeable future. Just until the effects of the vaccine are knocking hospitalisations down.

@TrustTheGeneGenie

I work in a mental health unit and our problems have already begun. Of course, nobody gives a shit about saving the NHS when it's 'just' mental health services Smile
Ours too. The pandemic has totally screwed services for people in my sector. We're talking about illnesses that thrive in isolation, so lockdown hasn't been particularly helpful Hmm
Iheartmysmart · 31/12/2020 16:30

@DominaShantotto Flowers Talking to DS earlier and out of 6 of his friends only 1 has any intention of carrying on with his degree course. Most of them decided to defer and the other has returned home and says he doesn’t want to go back it was so awful.

I think I’ve only broken one of the rules when both me and another of my single friends were struggling and she came round for coffee. It was before bubbles were allowed and we were both getting really low. Seemed the lesser of two evils.
