We were up to 999 posts so thought we needed a new thread!

Unfortunately that was our dog's name and she died last year but I did consider variations on it

Ah, sorry about your dog (and reminding you!) Thanks

David Paton who's a professor at Nottingham Business School identifies minimal if any effect of lockdowns in stats mobile.twitter.com/cricketwyvern/status/1344257862487441408

We're waiting to hear if going up to tier 4, we were mentioned in The Times as possibles.

cocopops · 30/12/2020 12:44

On the topic of schools and the new vaccine, I read a pretty sensible comment (imho) on the Telegraph last night along the lines of if they are getting the arm in to test kids, why not just jab them instead.

I thought that sounded pretty sensible, especially if you believe all the hype of the schools needing to close cos that’s where all the transmission is occurring.

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 30/12/2020 12:53

The vaccine isn’t licensed for use in children.

countrygirl99 · 30/12/2020 12:55

I really hope there isn't another lockdown. I don't think DH would survive it and I would hate to do the resulting prison sentence.

Bollss · 30/12/2020 12:57

i think Matt Hancock has said there wont be tier 5 / lockdown today. Saying that doesnt mean that it wont happen does it, he's not the most honest man!

Worldgonecrazy · 30/12/2020 12:59

Who knows whether there will be tier 5? This government have a track record of flipping over more often than a short order cook

MoltenLasagne · 30/12/2020 13:06

There won't be a tier 5 like there wasn't going to be an extended lockdown but then they came up with tier 4. They'll keep their promise if you squint and look in the opposite direction but will do whatever they feel like in reality.

Bollss · 30/12/2020 13:27

apparently were having hancock, williamson and boris make some kind of announcement this aft..... brill.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 30/12/2020 13:31

@TrustTheGeneGenie from what I understand Hancock and Williamson are just speaking/briefing parliament. Boris is doing a presser. Couldn't cope with all 3 of em one after the other.

Was watching "Big fat quiz of the year" last night and they were talking about the next government slogan....my favourite suggestion......
"Covid 19, Hancock nil"

Have been through the tv guides from end to end, there is no advance notice of anyone speaking whatsoever, anywhere, anytime.
TabbyStar · 30/12/2020 13:48

5pm according to BBC website

Gherkinbee · 30/12/2020 14:07

I'm in Northern Ireland and we have an 8pm curfew. Very eerie. Went out to garden last night and wondered what was so weird, realised it was because there was no traffic noise whatsoever ( I leave near a dual carriageway). Only places open are shops like Tesco, marksies. No gym classes for last few months, no kids swimming or activities. Trying to get DC out for walks but we are all bored, bored, bored now.

RobinHobb · 30/12/2020 14:13
**@RobinHobb* and @BogRollBOGOF*, this is the thing.

We keep hearing about how someone had Covid, tested negative, then tested positive again, so 'had it twice, so there's no immunity'. But it seems to me that it means the opposite - that having had it once the person has developed antibodies, or T cells, or some way that their immune system is primed, so when they encounter Covid again, as soon as it enters the nose/throat, the immune system deals with the virus and they end up with a whole load of de-activated viral particles which are picked up on a PCR test. The 'repeat infections' tend to be picked up on routine testing, suggesting that the person hasn't had symptoms again.

We even hear that the PCR picks up viral particles of a different strain, which is taken to show that there is no cross immunity. But I can't see that. It seems to me that unless the person is really unwell again, which happens, but is vanishingly rare, a PCR test picking up Covid again shows that there is immunity, even to a different Covid strain.

And you might expect, if your immune system swung into action on encountering any pathogen that it had met before, that you might feel slightly 'off colour' while it did its work. Or you might not notice. I've had times when I thought I was getting a cold but it never materialised, presumably because my immune system did its job. Was I 'having' that cold? I'd say not.

As for spreading, I suppose there might be a very short period - minutes? hours? while there was live virus while the immune system was dealing with it, but it's likely that for some or most of that time the affected person was still in the place where they re-encountered it, so others would catch it from the original source, rather than people actively neutralising Covid being a serious spreading concern.

Anyway, I'm not an immunologist, but some of the hysterical claims seem to defy what biological knowledge I do have, combined with common sense.
I don't think it works this way. What the PCR test picks up is a certain portion of the viral DNA. So if you have an infection with Covid (for the first time), your immune system recognizes there is an antigen, there is something called an antigen presenting cell, and series of steps, that leads you to produce B cells/antibodies that are tailored to attack the antigen (Covid). During this period the viral DNA works to make you sick, as the DNA replicates in the human host cells. The PCR tests pick up a certain portion of this DNA.
On the second time around you are exposed to the virus, the antibodies already exist and the virus does not replicate (and there is no viral DNA), and the PCR test cannot then pick this up. So you would test as negative. So basically, the virus would have to be alive and replicating (ie producing DNA) to test positive, and that's when you are infected.
In spite of this, PCR test etc, I am completely in agreement with the fact that we have epidemic of hysteria. I can't stand the hypochondria :-)

Don't intend to watch Hancock's Half Hour (Tony would definitely be a dementor) but if I happen to catch any of it whilst hoovering, I'm awarding myself points for the following phrases :

 • "and this is why we must act now"
 • "suppress the virus"
-"save lives" -"stay at home" -"overwhelmed" Points to be swapped for alcoholic beverage of choice. Everyone to get their own tea tonight.

😂😂 we could share a cell I’m about to go out for a walk, not because I need or even want to but because these days I never ever seem to be alone, I need to be alone for the sake of my own sanity, but someone is always just there
PolkadotGiraffe · 30/12/2020 15:05

What is an AD?

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 30/12/2020 15:28

That put sall our family in England under tier 4 now then.

I wonder if we have more restrictions coming in Wales - the first week back for our children will be distant learning already - which has been reduced from all day to mornings only and nothing but food shops open near us.

I don't know anything about Tony Hancock, that seems a shame he'd be a D.
Sonicthehedgehogg · 30/12/2020 15:45

Balls. Tier 4.
I'm on long days NYE and both Sat and Sun so DH is on his own with DD. Previously he could at least meet with family for a walk/playground. It's long old days with a toddler, which sensibly is why they introduced the bubbles for single parents. Poor bugger... and we were going to do dry Jan... maybe not this year.

Iheartmysmart · 30/12/2020 15:53

Bugger! Tier 4 here as well. Does anyone know how long these new restrictions are for? I can’t bring myself to look!

Seriouslymole · 30/12/2020 15:56

I've come back here to stop me engaging on other threads on this site - I need to learn. Why is it people are calling for "at least 4 weeks" of school shut down? Please. Can no-one see the bigger picture here? It's demoralising and depressing and other de-words.

I wonder if I shouldn't just ban myself from Mumsnet.

amicissimma · 30/12/2020 16:00

@RobinHobb, thanks. That's interesting. So the immune system is so efficient that it stops the virus replicating if it gets in a second time. That's impressive. I hadn't realised what a clever body I have! (Not sarcastic, genuinely in awe).

@DominaShantotto, "That's like the holy trinity of arseholes."
Maybe not so holy! Grin
