Good news about the Oxford vaccine. Feeling stressed about all the Covid stuff at the moment - it's just relentless

Seriouslymole · 30/12/2020 07:32

@rosettesforjill I know how you feel - for me it is the uncertainty of everything and the lack of being able to plan for anything at all. I'm dreading schools closing, I'm very aware that my job might be gone at any point in time (travel) and even simple things like arranging to meet family was planned for before Christmas and then went out the window. It is utterly draining.

(Loving the username by the way, have been scouring ebay for copies of the Jill books as foolishly bought my 10 year old one book and she loves them - they are all out of print which is an outrage!!)

Iheartmysmart · 30/12/2020 07:38

Good news about the Oxford vaccine. I see there is clamouring in mumsnet panic land for us all to be locked up until everyone is vaccinated.

Used to love the Jill books as well. I’ve reverted back to reading a lot of my old favourites during this year. Not sure if that’s because they are a reminder of when life wasn’t shite or my brain just can’t process anything new at the moment.

How are you @DominaShantotto?

Weedsnseeds1 · 30/12/2020 08:11

Just discovered the NHS app that allows you to filter from 1 mile radius to 10 mile radius. My tier 3 area has < 3 cases with "we don't pinpoint exact locations in these cases as it would be identifying" (they don't need to, its my next door neighbours Smile) so I think I can safely nip out to the local Coop for some bread.

zigaziga · 30/12/2020 08:18

I saw the weirdest thing on Twitter yesterday. Someone replied to a doctors general comment about COVID with an essay about their son who wants to go to the gym (in Tier 3) and how they’ve been begging him not to go but he Just. Won’t. Listen. The woman is in tears about it.
The reply by someone sympathising and saying they’d themselves be “in bits” if they were in that situation.

What the hell?

Gretchen Rubin who has books and a podcast about happiness and habits etc. likes young adult fiction and talks about how (re)reading it is a sign for her of being overwhelmed. She has a list of her favourites here gretchenrubin.com/2016/10/great-books-childrens-young-adult-literature-favorites

Great news about the Oxford vaccine but why are they waiting until next week to start giving it to people. You cannot tell me the government didn’t have advance warning it was going to be approved. It’s hardly a surprise so why don’t they start giving it tomorrow at least in hospitals to staff?
I’m concerned that they’re going to fuck this up too and destroy more lives when they could use this fabulous achievement to get us out of this shit show quickly.

Seriouslymole · 30/12/2020 08:26

@TabbyStar that is interesting - this year I have read The Outsiders, Who Sir Me Sir and all the Jill books (with my daughter in fairness).

Agreed. Apparently "within weeks" we could have 1500 local vaccination centres up and running. WTF? That's not enough and not soon enough. Why are they not up and running already in preparation, DH said this morning, why are they not for a start using the Nightingale centres.

Hurrah for the Oxford vaccine, but its just a tad suspicious that the announcement has come out today, when they're about to announce new restrictions. Its going to be very carrot and stick, isn't it?

AD stands for anti dementor. There are creatures in Harry Potter called dementors, who suck all hope and happiness from you and eventually take your soul. Way back at the start of the pandemic thread after thread was posted on by posters like this and anyone who'd dare question anything or disagree with anything (like putting cheese in your coffee) was bullied off these threads. And so any actual discussion disappeared and it became an echo chamber of misery.

We are the antidote to that. We follow the rules, but not the "roolz" and we question and discuss with respect to each other. It's all very civil.

Thank you! I have all the books somewhere at my parents' house - need to dig them out for myself my DC

dingit funny, it's on my list of places to visit but it would be quite strange to see the home skyline from far away.
I'm not sure where you live, but Epsom Downs gives you an excellent view
MargosKaftan · 30/12/2020 09:04

The Oxford vaccine is great news, best bit is they have approved an up to 12 week gap between jabs, so they can race through jabbing lots of people for 11 weeks then start going back to do the next jab.

Which takes us until Easter.

I'm refusing to join in the negativity of "we'll be locked down forevermore!" I think the idea of life being back to normal by April is now completely achievable. This is going to really piss off the dementors who have enjoyed the misery.

Fuck em, im going on a January diet after all - I shall be in a bikini at Easter! (Before you worry cabin fever has got to me - my holiday from 2020 Easter was rescheduled to Easter 2021 - I'm not planning on hitting Sainsburys for chocolate eggs in my swimmers)

LivinLaVidaLoki · 30/12/2020 09:18

A teacher at DS primary just commented on a local news site that she hoped schools would stay closed for a while as she doesn't feel they're safe.
She said that even though they don't leave their classes or mix bubbles at all, ever, it's not knowing what families have been up to over Christmas that makes her worry.
At the end of this last term, the deputy head retired. There was to be a presentation after school the week before school closed. I was asked to take something in for this (trying to be a bit vague so as not to out myself).
In the school hall were all of the school staff (minus the handful of TAs that run after school club) crammed in having a jolly. There was a buffet table and cake set up and tables chairs and people standing about chatting or dancing. There was a window open but not one of them was wearing a mask or keeping a distance.
When I have been into school (I have legit reasons to be in there occasionally) there are no masks.

So, our kids make them nervous but not nervous enough to stop them all having a massive jolly with each other at the end of the last term......I can't even explain why this makes me uncomfortable but it just feels really hypocritical.

Sorry if that doesn't make too much sense.

@AcornAutumn and Emil of hysteria describes the situation perfectly. When people who have a slightly above zero chance of death from COVID, are convinced they are going to die, what else can you call it? When otherwise sensible people like my OH were under the impression that it was a death sentence for the elderly and infirm and express surprise that an 83 year old with a stroke can survive a disease with a 95% survival rate in that age bracket, then yes, we are in a pandemic of hysteria.

Worldgonecrazy · 30/12/2020 09:36

Wtf is an “Emil” and how did predictive text get that from a badly typed ‘pandemic’? 🤪

rosettesforjill · 30/12/2020 10:08

I can't quite believe that so many teachers think they should have priority on vaccinations, no matter what their age or level of vulnerability. The whole idea is that you want to protect the people who are most likely to overwhelm the hospitals. Once that has happened, you can stop worrying about needing to lockdown for rising cases because for most people it's going to be a nasty couple to few weeks then back to normal. And the rare few who do get it particularly badly will have access to a bed and treatment because all the hospitals aren't full.

Of course the jab is a bonus and if you can avoid getting Covid that's the ideal situation, just like you would want to avoid getting any illness, no matter how mild. It just seems that everyone is so panicked now and has completely lost sight of the point of lockdowns, vaccinations etc. Like the people who think if we keep locking down, the virus will just say sod it and fuck off.

Bollss · 30/12/2020 10:18

checking in. Good news about Oxford. Can't let myself get excited about it, though. Just dont trust the gov not to eff it up. The comments about wearing masks forever more scare me. When it's not law i'm stopping i just hope its sooner rather than later. Am about to book a long weekend by the coast in June. Slightly optimistic that it might be okay - not brave enough to book abroad but saving some hol days so i can book a last min and fuck off fingers crossed. What do we think? Is it gonna happen or not?

Wedding is being re arranged to 2022 because i cant be fucked with the stress of reducing numbers!!

Wow I can't keep up with this thread so I've slipped a chunk. It is so helpful to read though and I'm going to go back to it but wanted to add my own annoyance before the thread moves on again.

Local mountain rescue team post on Facebook being shared around. It starts by asking those in tier 3 and 4 not to travel to go hiking as it really affects them if they have to isolate if someone they rescue tests positive. They've also been hammered this year with so many more inexperienced hikers than usual. It's very reasonable considering the risks they put themselves in voluntarily. But it then goes on to say that cases are out of control and if people had just followed the rules in the first place then we wouldn't be in this position, sorry what???? Cue loads of people outdoing one another with how long since they've visited their family in the area despite only living an hour or two away. The number of people sharing it is making me twitchy.
