We were up to 999 posts so thought we needed a new thread!
@Jourdain11 I think your comment on here was in response to mine in the Tier 5 thread! There’s a poster on my local paper website who is absolutely desperate for a total lockdown however they live in one of the most exclusive areas of the town where you’d be lucky to get change out of 750K for an average size house. Drives me mad!

Ooh Livin, good for you. I hope you enjoy your new lipstick.

I’ve just spent a small fortune on Amazon after reading the little things for the house thread.
Yes! It was. Don't know how I ended up posting here, lol!

Missushbb · 28/12/2020 22:06

@tappitytaptap

I’m a bit bored of muddy walks now... I can say that here right?! I love a walk normally but bloody hell it’s freezing, I have a 2 and a 4 year old who get insanely muddy and I have to wash every item of clothing they are wearing! What I’d give for a coffee at a friends whilst the kids play in the warmth. Even soft play! Never thought I’d mourn not being able to go there Grin
Yes! I love getting outdoors but crikey it is freezing at the moment!
Weedsnseeds1 · 28/12/2020 22:15

Not sure about cheese in coffee but...

DominaShantotto · 28/12/2020 22:16

I have no idea how we will cope if primaries close (which it’s feeling like they’re dripping towards). I can kiss my degree goodbye and probably my marriage if it gets strained like last time.

Iheartmysmart · 28/12/2020 22:32

Oh @DominaShantotto I really feel for you Flowers. The uncertainty for those with school age children must be awful.

Hmm cheese in tea? Have we not suffered enough this year.

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 28/12/2020 22:42

I don't know how DD will cope if primaries close. She's been a different child this term compared with the summer. We are about as privileged as it's possible to get- plenty of space, plenty of devices, plenty of books - but she needs the company of her peers. I'm so angry that the Government rates children's wellbeing so low. (My view is coloured by the fact that every one of DD's teachers, since year R - she's now Y6 - has been significantly younger than me, and therefore unlikely to be high risk.)

I'd support moving teachers up the vaccination list, but I can't support closing schools.

Justgivemewine · 28/12/2020 22:44

Ahh feck it, I’ve just bitten on a thread ‘over there’
I blame the wine 🍷

Anotherthink · 28/12/2020 22:58

I'm quite ignorant to Terry pratchett...I know that he is revered but haven't got a clue what kind of books he wrote. Is it a bit sci fi lord of the rings?! I've always switched off a bit as you do when you're aware of someone for so long, it no longer piques your interest when the name crops up. This thread has got me curious now though!

Worldgonecrazy · 28/12/2020 23:02

In centuries to come, Terry Pratchett will be regarded as one of the greatest philosophers and social commentator ever to have lived.

BogRollBOGOF · 28/12/2020 23:03

Crap as the UK has been this year, there's not many places I'd teleport to instead. Probably only Sweden.
At least we haven't had stupid caps on exercise or silly pointless forms to hand in.

It's a tough enough time anyway without having to adjust to major life changes.

Tier 5 rumours are now on the localLIVE rag...

Weedsnseeds1 · 28/12/2020 23:12

My fear is that the "predictions" in the news seem to be realised a short time after.
Banning outdoor exercise seems insane to me.

SirSamuelVimes · 28/12/2020 23:23

Amen!
Anotherthink · 28/12/2020 23:33

Well that's an accolade...will have to give him a whirl. I won't bother asking where to start I can see there's no one answer Grin

@BogRollBOGOF I'd love to know what the reality of the restrictions were in other countries. I recall in france you had to get permission by text to leave your property...I feel like I've made it up now but since truth is stranger than fiction in 2020 so I won't have done. I just feel like that couldn't possibly work in real life. I feel very lucky to live rurally throughout all of this....can get away with it a bit more in the countryside

MissEWeatherwax · 28/12/2020 23:35

Re discworld, I started with Mort, then quickly read the first 3. Then had to wait for next book! Then birthday and Christmas books, became a thing. I have every book. I need to get a lifeBlush
I have three books signed, I’m that sad I waited in very very long queues for book signing. So Mort has a very special place in my heart. The books got me though some very sad times.
I can’t quote be Amen indeed Worldgonecrazy.

MercyBooth · 28/12/2020 23:37

@Jourdain11 About time for Leveson 2 i think.

Justgivemewine · 28/12/2020 23:39

@MissEWeatherwax we have a signed book too. Will treasure it forever.

Anyway I came back here for sanity as the fb post I mentioned in a previous post has really kicked off 🤣🤣 so I’ve come back to stop myself posting something i might regret in a pissed up state.

SirSamuelVimes · 29/12/2020 00:14

Re. Pratchett, Hogfather is a pretty good one to start with, is the right season for it! Mort is brilliant, as is Guards Guards. If you don't have offendable religious sensibilities then Small Gods is a stand alone and is a bit of an overlooked masterpiece I reckon.

I'm trying to be polite by not swooping in on dh's two new Discworld books (Going Postal & Monstrous Regiment) but I'm not going to last more than another day or two. New (to me) Pratchett! Wonderous.

Jourdain11 · 29/12/2020 00:20
@Jourdain11 About time for Leveson 2 i think.
We should start a petition!

Honestly, the way they present their so-called "facts" - DOOM, DEATH, DOOM - in black and red, great huge typeface, no context, no background. It's so bloody irresponsible and it makes me really angry!

Not to mention the absolute dereliction of duty in failing to report other important and newsworthy events, like Belarus, Yerevan, the schoolboys in North Nigeria. Because, obviously, only British lives and deaths matter. In fact, scrap that - only British corona lives and deaths matter.

NannyGythaOgg · 29/12/2020 01:48

@Anotherthink tell us your favourite genre or a favourite book or two and we can point you to a TP masterpiece that will fit. I agree with @SirSamuelVimes that Hogfather is timely (in more ways than one)

@SirSamuelVimes (hmm - can't seem to tag you twice in one timeline). Monstrous Regiment is very time with regard to being gender critical don't forget your socks

NannyGythaOgg · 29/12/2020 01:49

*timely not time

110APiccadilly · 29/12/2020 02:28

I haven't read all the Discworld books, but I've enjoyed the ones I've read. The BBC did a rather good audio adaptation of Guards! Guards! at some point, which I enjoyed (I do like well done audio adaptations - I prefer then to film or TV adaptations a lot of the time.)

110APiccadilly · 29/12/2020 02:31

About people not caring about mental health - I'm sure it's because mental illness is not (they think, I'm not sure they're right) contagious. So there's a lot of people who don't care if loads of others are made mentally ill, because they don't think it will affect them. Widespread infectious disease though, that scares them, because that might get it. It's sheer selfishness, for some people, at least. B

Oh I guess that would explain why they don't care about other illnesses too.

I had been thinking they just see those of us with mental health issues as disposable.

Wide awake - not from stress - but generally I think today is the day for an announcement and I'm guessing curfew over NYE.

ISaySteadyOn · 29/12/2020 06:33

Pyramids was my first Terry Pratchett. But I like the witches ones best. DH likes the Vimes ones best.

Flowers to everyone feeling fed up. My friend said yesterday that if they close schools, she will protest. She's not normally the sort to protest and she counts as a keyworker so her DC could go to school. And that was hopeful. Because she cared about other people which is a normal state for her. And she can't be the only one. See this thread for proof of that!
