We were up to 999 posts so thought we needed a new thread!

The issue is also, those two aren't unlinked! If someone who is alcohol dependent develops severe liver disease, they'll need "medical" hospital treatment. If someone with anorexia becomes severely ill to the point of developing organ failure, they will also need "medical" treatment. If someone takes an overdose, they'll need to be in ICU... and so on.

I must be feeling optimistic.....I've just ordered new lipstick....

@Clockstop, that wouldn't go down well here. It's taken me months to persuade my 82-year-old neighbour that DH and I don't need her to go shopping for us.

Jourdain11 · 28/12/2020 21:03

It just proves, lockdown is a total upper middle class thing - those who can sit in their nice spacious home, enjoying their gardens, working from their spare rooms or on furlough. While the underpaid and undervalued go out to toil in the supermarkets, on the beat, in the hospitals, in order to "keep us safe".

Jourdain11 · 28/12/2020 21:04

Wrong thread, sorry!

Justgivemewine · 28/12/2020 21:04

@NastyBlouse

Oh, and on more pleasant subjects...

Reaper Man was my gateway drug for Terry Pratchett too. Grin

I am starting on the colour of magic tonight is a desperate attempt to escape reality 😄

Any ideas of a Tier 5 and tracing apps can just go to hell.

Our local village fb dementors are on the rampage along the lines of Oh no, I saw people on a walk from more than one family, this is going to last forever and we’re all going to die.
Fortunately some sensible people are pointing out the unlikelyhood of covid leaping from person to person in the fresh air assuming they are even infected in the first place. 🙄

I went for a walk today just to have some alone time and escape the whining, grumping and constant demands for attention in the house today. When I got back I was greeted by ‘what’s for lunch mum’. Quite frankly I nearly walked straight back out again. If the schools don’t go back in jan I might just go mad. I am never fucking alone, even when the dc are at school, dh is working from home and while he’s not in the same room he’s still ‘there’. Home is no longer my space and I don’t know how much more I can take.
But that’s ok cos ye know, covid rules.

Wow! I would never turn down an offer of someone shopping for me! 😂

I need new lipstick. I have new eyeshadow.
SirSamuelVimes · 28/12/2020 21:15

@Justgivemewine if you don't warm to colour of magic, skip ahead a couple - he didn't really hit his stride until at least Equal Rites.

Sonicthehedgehogg · 28/12/2020 21:18

Just about to open Guards! Guards!.... should I start elsewhere? (This is VERY important as it's the most exciting thing happening in my life RN so need to get it right Grin)

Justgivemewine · 28/12/2020 21:28

@SirSamuelVimes.
I know what you mean, I’m so glad we read Reaper Man first, if we’d read colour of magic first we might not have got into them which would have been a real shame.
I’m going to read them all in order (I’m a bit anal like that 😄)
Both dh and I have read them all before but not for years so it’ll be like reading them as new, except I already know they’ll be really good.
This could save my sanity, and since I’m planning on giving up the alcohol😱 next year I may have to find a new suitably discworld associate username.

Iheartmysmart · 28/12/2020 21:32

@Jourdain11 I think your comment on here was in response to mine in the Tier 5 thread! There’s a poster on my local paper website who is absolutely desperate for a total lockdown however they live in one of the most exclusive areas of the town where you’d be lucky to get change out of 750K for an average size house. Drives me mad!

Ooh Livin, good for you. I hope you enjoy your new lipstick.

I’ve just spent a small fortune on Amazon after reading the little things for the house thread.

NannyGythaOgg · 28/12/2020 21:34

My first TP was Soul Music - I loved it.

@Justgivemewine I agree with the blackboard monitor above (@SirSamuelVimes) The Colour of Magic is not necessarily the best place to start. It is good but don't give up on The Discworld if it doesn't grab you. Try another one first.

@Sonicthehedgehogg Guards Guards is a good place to start. It is many people's favourite (though not mine - mine are the death ones, including The Hogfather)

If any of you have bookwork teens - the Tiffany Aching series is a good way to get them hooked.

All of them do stand alone but it is a good idea to try for order within 'series' as the characters do develop.

BogRollBOGOF · 28/12/2020 21:37

Ooh, I managed to borrow Equal Rites from the library a few years ago. Quite an accomplishment as our local library even prior to 2020 was about as accessible as a planning document in a Vogon filing system Wink

Had a decent day. McDrivethru. Abandoned DH and the DCs after eating in a supermarket carpark, and drove off to the next county to walk with my friend while they walked home. Grin

We've got the night owls sussed for exercise... the trick is for over dinner, DH announces that the DCs need pyjamas and bed and he's about to go for a walk... then the precious darlings suddenly have great enthusiasm to go walkies Wink

DS1 was quite poigniant today... he anounced over lunch that he's struggling to remember what normal is now. He's just gone 10, so that's about 9% of his life in this shit? We talked about turning up at the swimming pool for a splash, the cinema, letting friends come round after we met up. Making it up as we went along.

Lostinacloud · 28/12/2020 21:40

I feel I need to caveat this rant with the assurance that I fully appreciate life in the uk is equally as crap at the moment and that many of the issues im frustrated about would be just as present in the UK, particularly re seeing friends and family, however....
......I’m feeling really fed up today Sad DH is fed up with me complaining about how shit lockdowns and restrictions are and so doesn’t even really listen anymore. I have no sounding board!
In addition, this summer, after much uncertainty due to covid, we moved to france with my DH’s job. It’s a fixed term thing so we will move back to the UK but we sold it to the kids as this amazing opportunity and whilst of course to some extent it will have been similar if still in the uk, so far we have managed to take them to see sweet fa. Most places of interest have been closed or when they were open we were under restrictions and were only allowed 1km from our house for an hour per day! My oldest has had to wear a mask all day at school since September and then since October my other DC have had to wear one all day at primary school as well. I don’t care what people say, masks on kids are about as effective as a fucking chocolate teapot and I really don’t think it’s healthy for them. They come out of school everyday looking more tired than usual and paler than normal. While the weather was hot my poor oldest DC had a headache every single day. My mum instincts to protect them and make it better for them are in constant overdrive and I feel angry and frustrated that we are having to live like this. Just before the Christmas break my DC10 came out of school so happy because the PE teacher had told them they might be able to play football at break time in January for one day per week instead of just traipsing round the yard with nothing at all to do like prisoners. I mean wtf has the world come to?

Of course this Christmas we had no hope of getting back to see family or for anyone to come here and since we moved here that has been the case anyway because of the fucking quarantine when heading back into England. It has been inexplicably difficult to set ourselves up in a new country with a different language and have no support possible from any of our family or even just a visit from family to show them our new house and area. Trying to learn and understand french when everyone is muffled under a mask has also been frustrating. I’ve had no opportunity to make any solid local friends and today has just been crap because DH and I had what was probably a long overdue argument about nothing just because we are both so fed up and frustrated. The kids have lost any desire to try and go out because it is cold and wet and all we can do is walk about looking at closed places and eat as we go because you can’t eat in anywhere. That’s been the same since the beginning of November and lasts until at least 20th January!
Then, to top it all off, french news starts reporting the possibility of a 3rd lockdown from the new year - arghh FUCK RIGHT OFF!!!! And Boris too with his leaked tier 5 crap!!!

I'm wondering if people who feel outdoor exercise is a privilege are happy to have a really sedentary lifestyle normally or spend huge portions of their day doing starjumps in front of the TV.

Justgivemewine · 28/12/2020 21:43

And Crivens! Let’s not forget the Wee Free Men, Waily Waily. 😄

Iheartmysmart · 28/12/2020 21:47

It’s entirely possible Suffering. Not sure my downstairs neighbour would be very keen on me doing star jumps in front of the TV. The dog would be pretty unimpressed as well.

Justgivemewine · 28/12/2020 21:50

@Lostinacloud, sound off as much as you like here. This thread and group of AD’s has helped more than they can ever know. You aren’t alone, a lot of people have had new beginnings/hopes/opportunities spoilt this year, it’s shit, and it’s ok to feel whatever you feel about it.

NannyGythaOgg · 28/12/2020 21:51

I think one of the more charitable reasons the 'lockdown' fanatics are skewed the way they is because of fear.

Being able to lock down easily in the first place has meant they have been very protected already and the longer you go without doing something the more scary it becomes.

I am retired and didn't go to the supermarket (or anywhere) for just 3 weeks, the first time I went shopping I was incredibly nervous. I haven't been nervous since.

I am (or was) more surprised at the medical and education people getting all riled up. We know there are plenty that are very down to earth and reasonable and that at least some of the hysterical ones are not really teacher or HCPs but generally, those that are not able to shut themselves away quickly come to realise that, although Covid may be shit, most people either don't get it or don't get particularly ill. (And the HCPs at the sharp end know that death existed before Covid and that there are many more difficult ways to die)

justasking111 · 28/12/2020 21:56

Police the local rag said kicked 20 people off a mountain area, it was covered in snow, but they had driven there not walked so unforgivable. You must start and finish at home on foot or a bicycle. God forbid you should look for empty spaces in Wales.

pollyhemlock · 28/12/2020 22:02

My absolute favourite Terry Pratchett book is Night Watch. It’s not the place to start though. I might go with Equal Rites, followed by Mort and then Reaper Man.

Lostinacloud · 28/12/2020 22:02

Thank you @Justgivemewine. It is very nice to have a safe place to express my frustrations without being told I should be staying at home anyway or that their 1 year old happily wears a mask for 14 hours a day.
Also, despite all the restrictions and masks even on the streets here I still managed to catch covid in October anyway. If I’d never heard of covid I would have thought to myself that I’d just had a bit of a mild flu for 3 days and gone on with my life perhaps only a bit surprised that I had no smell or taste for about a month afterwards!

Weedsnseeds1 · 28/12/2020 22:02

But the lockdown fanatics expect power, WiFi, food, home deliveries, sewage treatment...

Missushbb · 28/12/2020 22:04

@Iheartmysmart

Thanks Livin. Almost had cheese in my coffee! Not intentionally, the bloody cream had gone off. Bleugh!

Do you think there will be a change in reporting at some point when a positive spin is put on the numbers rather than the current negativity? There must be huge numbers of people who are going to take a lot of persuading that it’s safe to go out again.

Cheese in the coffee always makes me laugh 😂
