In A&E with a numb face...keep me company please?!

I've NC'd for this.

Yesterday afternoon my face suddenly went numb on the right side. No other symptoms but my face has drooped and 24 hours on is still numb.

Anyone ever had this? What was the outcome? I tried hard not to google it but it's very worrying.

111 sent me to A&E and I've had bloods taken. It looks to be a long wait!

It's busy, people are queuing on ambulance stretchers to get in. Standing room only (because half the chairs are taped off for social distancing).

So far, there has been one person in for toothache, one because he's punched a wall on Christmas Day, another with a sore toe....Confused

Joke offering... What's the first animal named in the Oxford English Dictionary? Ox!

Since you've mentioned the Oxford English Dictionary -- in my first job, one of my colleagues told me that the word "gullible" had been dropped from the dictionary because it wasn't used much any more. I was appalled, saying "That's a stupid thing to do", when I noticed the room had gone very quiet. My colleagues were rolling on the floor laughing in silent hysterics ....

Hope you're doing well, OP, and getting whatever treatment you need. Flowers

Sadly there's no cure for gullible ....

Bell’s palsy?

My DH had Bells Palsy last January. It took about 8 weeks to recover from but annoyingly left him with permanent tinnitus in one ear. No other lasting symptoms though.

I used to be a CT radiographer, we didn't do brain scans to diagnose BP, so you may not have a CT if they are confident that is the cause of your symptoms.

MrsKypp · 27/12/2020 15:51

I've known 3 people who had Bell Palsy and they all recovered completely (I think it took around 6 months for full recovery).

Not saying that is what you have, I just wanted to let you know that recovery can be complete.

You're in the right place to find out and treat it if necessary.

Good luck x

numbcheek · 27/12/2020 15:51

Think the CT is to rule out a stroke, he had me do a test, sort of clapping and turning my hand at the same time and I couldn't do it properly.

He said not to be overly worried at this stage though so hopefully bells

Wishing you loads of luck @numbcheek. If I think of any awful jokes I'll come back with them Grin

My friend had this long agol. I forgot what what it was, but she was fine eventually ( went to hospital) and that was 20 years ago...she is still fine.

SeaToSki · 27/12/2020 15:57

Glad they are doing a CT, it will rule out a mini stroke. Have you had the Covid vaccine yet? One of the side effects that has been reported in 7 people is Bells Palsy - so rare but not unknown.

Can you move any part of the numb side of your face? Is it numb all over? Is there any tingling along with the numb? Have you hit or wrenched your head and/or neck and/or shoulders recently?

Could you be perimenopausal? - that might link to hormones and a return of the migraines as those that have them as teens often get a return when peri menopausal.

I've got some jokes for you!

I lost my friend in the fog today, she will be mist 😁

I was introduced to a vegetarian woman today, I'd never seen herbivore

badacorn · 27/12/2020 15:57

Good luck op hope everything comes back ok.

HumphreyGoodmanswife · 27/12/2020 15:58

Yes the CT will be to rule out stroke. My DH managed to pass the cva test so they diagnosed BP without a scan.

Brain scans take 5 mins, painless, no worries, it's no worse than a straightforward x-ray.

Hope you're back home to your family soon x

As others have said they will most likely be ruling out a TIA. Hope you're okay op, what a shit place to be over Xmas but in the best hands !

madasamarchhare · 27/12/2020 16:01

Thinking of you. As others have said a ct is very quick and easy. It sounds like they want to rule out a stroke it is good they are being thorough. I wouldn’t worry about not being able to do their exercises, if you are worried about being there and on your own that’s an easy explanation in itself. Hope it’s Bell’s palsy and sorts itself out in time.

supersop60 · 27/12/2020 16:04

Hope you get answers soon, OP.

Patient: Doctor, doctor, I think I've got amnesia.
Doctor: How long have you had it?
Patient: Had what?

Orchidflower1 · 27/12/2020 16:05

Did you get dropped @numbcheek or have you made your own way? Hope you can get picked up after. You’ll be shattered from standing if nothing else!

We having left overs today: turkey, mash, purple and regular carrots, petit poi, roasted sprouts, cauliflower ( not had yet) and gravy

dh just said can he have baked beans as he really fancies them 🤷‍♀️

RebeccaCloud9 · 27/12/2020 16:07

I had Bell's years ago. I thought I'd had a stroke but googled it and it said it gets better on its own so I didn't even go to the Dr which in hindsight was daft! But it did get better. Not before my sister enjoyed hours of making me laugh because it was so hilarious watching me with only one movable side of my face. She liked to catch me just after I'd taken of sip of a drink 😂

Hi OP, I had a similar incident three weeks ago, for me it was a TIA which I expected due to a family history of high cholesterol. I was an atypical presentation as my R hand was also numb/pins and needles with a quarter of my face being numb. I realise now it had probably started two days previously but I just did not realise and thought it was a reaction to unwashed fruit.

Anyway, ECG, bloods and a scan did not flag it up but a subsequent app't at the TIA clinic confirmed what had happened so am now on Anticoagulants and Statins. Hand is back to normal, face is OK and lips are getting there.

The three obvious are, Bell's Palsy, TIA or MS... MS is unlikely due to the rapid onset. If it is a TIA, you are very lucky as it is a warning and you can take action to mitigate any risks.

Hope you are cleared soon.

ButterMeUpScotty · 27/12/2020 16:11

There is good evidence that vitamin B12 given quickly after onset of Bells Palsy significantly improves outcomes. Please ask the doctor about this.

numbcheek · 27/12/2020 16:11

@ShalomToYouJackie brilliant 😂 love the jokes.

I haven't had the covid vaccine yet no so it's not that. They're looking after me, glad I'm getting the scan to rule out a stroke.

Don't know how long scanning takes but I've just heard someone on the phone and it sounds like I'm 3rd on the list
