Sorry to hear about the dizziness @Silkiechickscat. Your DS's perfect English breakfast sounds like DS1s perfect one too. DS2 likes beans so he'd have those too.

Our tree and decorations are down, and DH has taken the tree back to the place we hired it from. The DC and I are sat on the sofa watching Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I need to go for a run when DH gets back as part of RED January. I am already unenthusiastic.

EggNogPegg · 02/01/2021 15:33

@Champagneforeveryone

In the days before smartphones were a thing, someone kidnapped DH's Henry Hoover from his van and took him on holiday. We received a number of delightful photos of him on the beach, at the amusement arcade, in a deckchair, earring fish and chips etc Grin
This is amazing. Was he returned with the photos?
Spudlet · 02/01/2021 15:58

@Champagneforeveryone That’s amazing! Henry’s adventures Grin

@EggNogPegg I often feel a bit ambivalent about going out pre-run, but I’m always a happier and nicer person when I get back. Go for it!

Silkiechickscat · 02/01/2021 16:00

Thanks very much the hope you feel better soon messages and the ear videos, very kind. I don't think its my ears though I have had a cold so not impossible. I think its either tiredness or anaemia, I haven't taken my folate tablets recently and my folate is very low - I've taken them now and they helped a lot before.

That's funny with the Henry Hoover photos. Xmas Grin

Yesterday I saw they are advertising for on call firefighters at our village firestation and I looked and saw there's a lot of physical tests (so that's me out!) but looked perfect for DD once she is 18 (min age). I told DD and she was so excited and says the 3 years before she's 18 will go really fast. I also mentioned to DS but he's not very strong so would fail the physical tests but he was also wow I would love to do that and can't believe you get £2k just for being on call as well as £10 an hour. Wow. That's far too much. He said he estimated his strength is he could carry 2 sausage rolls whereas they are looking for 60kgs. DD is super strong and would be fine.

Silkiechickscat · 02/01/2021 16:03

Our old Henry Hoover, may have just gone to Clearabee heaven, though they recycle 90% so may end up in someone else's home. That's assuming DH remembered it. It must be 15 years old or so.

MissConductUS · 02/01/2021 16:13

@kittlesticks - I found the thread about the Xmas gift but it's been deleted:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/4115787-I-got-a-fucking-hoover?pg=8

You can tell by the subject what the tone was. Grin I have two Miele canister vacs I'm very fond of. One is ancient and stays downstairs and my newer one is for the main floor.

@Spudlet - I normally run on pavement. No way I'd run in that kind of mud. And I agree about just going for it. That's why I go so early. I'm on autopilot and just go and get it done for the day.

@Silkiechickscat - Sorry to hear about your vertigo. Have you had it medically evaluated previously?

The men will have to decide if we have burgers again tonight or roast chicken for dinner tonight.

We got a full refund from Wickes for some paint that was called ‘chalk white’ but in reality it was a mushroomy brown. Replaced it with something called ‘antique cream’ which is a creamy white, as expected.

Spudlet · 02/01/2021 16:17

I didn’t so much run as tiptoe carefully, get stuck and then nearly go splat Grin I enjoy it though, as long as the whole route isn’t like that (which it never is around here, luckily).

MissConductUS · 02/01/2021 16:26

Welcome, @Eyeskydry and thanks for sharing your DIY news. Did they mix the color colour for you custom at Wickes or was it premixed?

Silkiechickscat · 02/01/2021 16:38

Yes MissC Normally I get dizziness rather than vertigo, don't normally get spinning. I went through neurology and had a brain and spine MRI and blood tests for folate and B12. The MRIs only showed small vessel disease and blood test just showed low folate and they recommended I take folic acid every day. Sometimes I test anaemic on FBC, sometimes not. It all got signed off pretty quickly as covid hit but when I take the vitamins I feel much less dizzy. The breathing I went to hospital this summer for covid negative and they said it will be asthma as it improves when we hoover up hay. They didn't note it down though and just said anti-histamines - all other results were normal but blood pressure was sky high but they weren't concerned about that. Covid negative which I expected otherwise I would have been world's first case. They think I'm allergic to hay and thatched roof. Family history of severe asthma on both sides but none as a child though used to get very ill running so school banned me from that. I struggle with breathing with all exercise except swimming. Just advised to do swimming only or very short bursts of other exercise. At hospital oxygen (?) readings were OK but they said that was as no allergens there. Anti-histamines help a lot. So pretty well tested. Xmas Grin

Not sure when DH will be back - Clearabee left at 2pm, thankfully the cat is blissfully happy with mattress and I think may have left DH for it. At least she's been quiet and content. DS said she's left the mattress only once in last 24 hours.

halfpasteleven · 02/01/2021 16:46

@Champagneforeveryone did Henry make it back safely from his adventures?
Went for a walk with DD ( in her buggy) earlier.
We are having Chinese take away for dinner in about an hour or so. This makes me happy.

Silkiechickscat · 02/01/2021 16:48

I love Chines takeaway, sometimes we have it 3 times a week Blush though DS often has sausage or fish and chips as they do that as well. It our biggest issue in March (after schools) when they closed for 2 months.

Champagneforeveryone · 02/01/2021 16:50

I'm glad Henry's adventures have proved a tonic Grin
The photos arrived in the post, a few at a time (this was the days of digital cameras so not instantly) Henry arrived mysteriously back in DH's van one day some weeks later. A friend of DH's had his Henry kidnapped and received ransom notes made of cut out letters from newspapers. I believe he had to supply donuts or sausage rolls or something to ensure Henry's safe return Grin

EggNogPegg · 02/01/2021 17:31

Someone you know then @Champagneforeveryone? That is a fantastic story.

I'm back from my run. We are going to do cottage pie for tea but I didn't have any veggie mince in, so I ran a 4k loop to Tesco and then straight home for the final 1k. I ran without headphones today and I enjoyed it. My head felt a bit clearer.

I managed to get DS1 some wellies today. I got him some green Dunlop ones from Millets for £12 in the sale. I thought we'd be able to size down as wellies often come up big, but DS1 tried on his usual size and they fitted perfectly. I still marvel at him being a size 4 (37 EU) at 9.

kittlesticks · 02/01/2021 17:38

Love the adventures of Henry!
Just ate prawn spaghetti, I do it with a fair bit of garlic and crispy bread crumbs on top - one of our faves and shockingly always demolished by both kids.
We went for a walk through the puddles in the woods behind the house. Kids looking out for 'our owl' who is so noisy after dark.

Spudlet · 02/01/2021 17:46

Well done Eggy!

We have taken the Christmas tree down (I say ‘we’; DH suddenly realised he had wood to chop so was outside. He did put it all back into the garage though). The room looks bigger but a little bare too. We shifted some furniture around to make space for the tree and have decided we actually like it like that, so now are thinking of putting some shelves up in the new space - although we will have to take them down each year to shove the tree up again!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 02/01/2021 18:12

Busy day today full of exciting things to do: discovering a toilet leak (luckiy it is never used), doing laundry, writing cards / letters to elderly relatives, finishing backup-ing files.

Had to inform DS that the delay in opening schools translates into online lessons and not more minecraft.

HelenaJustina · 02/01/2021 18:14

No decorations down here yet. Am hoping DH and DC will do it on the 4th when I go back to work. Dragged DC out early today to wear them out, this meant that they were quiet this afternoon while I went to work for a 3hr meeting. Ran home and got back just before sunset which was pleasing.

@Frownette it went really well! Mocktails and cocktails and canapés from 6pm. Then starters at 7.30 (hummus and crudités for DC roast cauliflower soup for adults) then lemon sorbet palate cleanser. Main was mashed potatoes, sausages, broccoli, carrots and peas. Then pudding (mini pavlova, warm mini cookie, strawberries and scoop of ice cream) followed by tea/coffee/warm milk and petit fours. Tossed DC up to bed at about 10, replete and tired!

Silkiechickscat · 02/01/2021 18:15

We've been having similar conversation that school closed until 18th doesn't mean 2 weeks extra holiday. Will be a shock for me too as I have to do 90% of DS's.

Sunbird24 · 02/01/2021 18:24

I went out and queued for a drive-through MacDonalds, then came back and cooked a huge batch of multigrain tagliatelle with basil pesto. That should get me through the next few days!

HelenaJustina · 02/01/2021 18:55

3 DC are back in school and 1 will work from home (secondary) They could have a place as a kw child as both DH and I count. But DH works mostly from home and DC is old enough and mature enough to self supervise. They are v smug about the lack of early mornings compared to their siblings!

Silkiechickscat · 02/01/2021 18:58

DH sent me a message to say he will be back around 7.30pm and the people who are buying our house have their first letter there.

MissConductUS · 02/01/2021 19:29

We had a bird feeder incident. My ever watchful DH noticed that the seed level was dropping very slowly so he took it apart and discovered that the openings into chamber in the bottom part where the birds get the seed were clogged. Apparently oil from the sunflower seeds mixes over time with shells, dust and seed particles forming lumps that prevented the seed from flowing into the chamber. Some hot water, soap and a bottle brush got it all cleaned out. He reassembled it, refilled it and hung it by back out and the birds are feasting again.

It's so nice to have a handy man in the house. 😁

I need some new wellies too. One of mine has a hole in. They are Dunlop and have lasted a year (but I wear them probably 6 days a week. Not all day, that would look weird in the office.)

Just had cauliflower cheese, leftover potato and spinach gratin and veggie sausages for dinner.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 02/01/2021 19:34

DH just called me to his office to show me fotos of red squirrels. Friends of his run a rescue and resettlement center (they keep gigantic chickens, as well).
Baby squirels can't pee on their own when they are born, so they have to be massaged regularily when the mother is not around.
