@Sunbird24

I’m a Wiltshire resident too, but also not a native - I’m a fugitive from across the border in Somerset...
I’m a Moonraker through and through 😊, though I now live very close to where three counties meet. Have lurked on here for ages, but my life’s too boring for writing many posts 😄 Happy New Year!
Silkiechickscat · 01/01/2021 19:57

Just had the room spinning like crazy for 10 minutes so closed eyes for another 10 minutes and its not spinning. No idea what caused that, hopefully just overtired. Only got about 4 hours sleep last night, thanks meow. Xmas Grin

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 01/01/2021 20:18

I have finished the second sleeve of my sweater - instead of looking like Dobby I now look like Dobby with sleeves.

EggNogPegg · 01/01/2021 20:37

Welcome @Strawberrycreamsundae. You give us too much credit. There is literally nothing too boring. Highlights include men in hi-vis jackets fitting new doors, an ironing board hook and it's migration to its final destination, a playlist of washing machine sounds, and a missing dog bed. And many many many cat photos.
Hello neighbour by the way.

@Prokupatuscrakedatus. That really made me laugh. We are going to need to see photos of this sweater.

Early night tonight @Silkiechickscat?

I have eaten strudel. The second helping was a mistake and I now feel faintly sick.

Frownette · 01/01/2021 20:46

Why do you all get sweet foxes? I've just got a yappy one who wakes me. Small shops were out of bin bags earlier which was a nuisance as I wanted to do the rubbish. Tomorrow when supermarket opening hours are normal.

I went for a walk earlier and it was lovely (not in a scenic way, just fresh air). Dark but not cold.

I want to hear more about the 5 course meal please Smile

Sunbird24 · 01/01/2021 20:47

I’ve used a mango & coconut hydrating balm stick on my dry knees, now they’re lovely and soft but also smell delicious. Good job I’m alone or I’d be telling people to sniff my knees.

Strawberrycreamsundae · 01/01/2021 20:48

@HeartsTrumpDiamonds I remember Zombie too, her thread was a haven on MN.
🙌 EggNogPegg
Highlight of today was cleaning the fridge out. Nothing exciting found but I seem to have blocks of haloumi cheese breeding on the top shelf 🥴 DH denies it’s anything to do with him although he’s the cheese buyer in this house.

LynnThese4reSEXPEOPLE · 01/01/2021 20:51

@MissConductUS it's an Alan Partridge joke (UK comedy character)

mathanxiety · 01/01/2021 20:54

I decided to go the roast pork /scalloped potatoes route in the end. We don't have as many leftovers as I though we'd have.

The Gulf of Mexico is the gift that keeps on giving right now, in the form of freezing rain which is to be followed by snow later tonight. I may need to don wellies to go out to run errands.

halfpasteleven · 01/01/2021 21:05

Thank you for the very kind words @MissConductUS and happy birthday to your DH!
We had a lovely slow day today, watched Paddington and went out for some fresh air with DS and DD after lunch until it became very cold and we had to come in.
I've come to bed with a headache- I think it's just tiredness from the late night last night.. (I don't do late nights v well as DD invariably wakes in the night at least once and will only want me so I usually go to bed with her )

Spudlet · 01/01/2021 21:24

@MissConductUS Alan Partridge is set in Norwich, which is near to me. It’s very British, but very funny Grin

Frownette · 01/01/2021 21:39

I'm dying to know is @MissConductUS likes Alan Partridge :) happy birthday DH!

He came under some fire recently about brexit, didn't he?

Frownette · 01/01/2021 21:39

Alan Partridge, not DH

Spudlet · 01/01/2021 21:44

He certainly debated it with Malcolm Tucker...

(I should add that the link leads to an extremely sweary spoof email exchange so should probably only be accessed by those who enjoy Malcolm Tucker and Alan Partridge...!) Blush

kittlesticks · 01/01/2021 21:53

This thread moves fast! @LynnThese4reSEXPEOPLE I love your username. We are huge partridge fans in this house.
His new podcast is so brilliant it's been one of the recent things I've listened to that's truly made me laugh.
It's all quiet in this house - we had a dreadful night with DD last night, I can't remember who predicted that the fireworks would wake her!
Anyway both kids in their beds/cots, DH downstairs with DCat playing a computer game, DCat not participating but loves to flump down on DH's knee as soon as the kids are asleep.
Chicken in wine was ok, but a bit soupy.

MissConductUS · 01/01/2021 22:00

Welcome, @Strawberrycreamsundae, and thanks for your kitchen appliance related calming news.

@LynnThese4reSEXPEOPLE - I watched the Alan Partridge clip and it was quite good. We get a lot of British drama here but not much comedy, with the exception years ago of Monty Python, which was hugely popular in the US.

@Frownette - thanks for your kind birthday wishes, I'll pass them along to DH. I'll also ask him what he thinks about Brexit if you like. Grin

@Spudlet - I've just had a google of Norwich. I am learning a great deal about British geography and history these days. That email exchange you linked to was really good too. I loved "no more worrying about asking what Poland wants for dinner".

Yes please! Do you have any special traditions in the US for midnight of new year?

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 01/01/2021 22:29

This thread does move fast!

@Strawberrycreamsundae I love finding people who remember our Zombie. She was a very special woman and I was lucky enough to meet her a few times IRL at London meet-ups. She even stayed with us one night. I have fond thoughts of her and my DDad wherever they are having a drink and a laugh together.

@MissConductUS happy birthday to MrConduct!

It's 5:30 here and we have had a thoroughly lazy day. Great start to 2021. No desire to go outside as freezing rain and wind. I think we are going to order pizza and wings for dinner.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 01/01/2021 22:32

@Frownette our Canadian New Years midnight traditions are pretty similar to the UK, champagne and kisses at midnight. I guess watching the ball drop in NYC is different because we are in the right time zone. Some people set off their own fireworks but we have never done so!

He says that as a Yank he's not qualified to have an opinion on it. I do think that a lot of people here are sympathetic to the sovereignty issues without understanding all of the other ramifications. I have great faith that the people of the UK will adapt and prosper regardless of Brexit. You always have.

As Hearts has indicated they're pretty similar to the UK. I find the focus on drinking unsettling as I'm a recovering alcoholic (fear not, I've been sober since 1994) so I don't generally make a big deal about it.

DH and DS are making pizza, then we have black and white cake from the posh bakery lined up for dessert, with cards and presents of course.

mathanxiety · 01/01/2021 23:01

Well done and best wishes for your continued recovery, @MissConductUS.

We had a toast at about 11pm as we are party poopers decided to observe Eastern Standard Time instead of Central since more of my DCs live on the east coast than here now. A lot of people around here set off fireworks at midnight last night so my goal of seeing in the New Year from the comfort of my bed fast asleep was thwarted. There were also ambulances blazing up and down my street all night - clearly some people were making a night of it.

EggNogPegg · 01/01/2021 23:21

I love the term Yank. Though I'd never use it for fear of causing offence.

I've never been a fan of sketch shows, so the Alan Partridge reference went straight over my head. I'm glad of the explanation.

Speaking of traditions, I discovered today that Christmas Crackers aren't a thing in the U.S. They are synonymous with Christmas Dinner in the UK, so not having them is crazy to me. What do you do without terrible jokes and crappy plastic toys (though our ones this year were plastic free ).

Best wishes for your continued recovery @MissConductUS and thank you for sharing.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 01/01/2021 23:40

Ha ha not to mention the paper crowns @EggNogPegg! We do have Christmas crackers in Canada too.

Frownette · 01/01/2021 23:40

Yes you're doing brilliantly Flowers

It isn't midnight to me until I hear big ben, I came running down the stairs at 11.50pm last night!

Some nice food and wildlife talk on here
