DS loves squirrels (so do I) and he loves watching the YouTube videos of squirrels getting in bird feeders and ones set up like squirrel obstacle courses. They are very smart with the obstacle courses and DS sits and giggles so much.

We have a garden squirrel here, which goes in our apple tree and sometimes runs across our thatched roof, he/she is very cute.

Silkiechickscat · 01/01/2021 15:58

Our cat was furious this morning - DH had gone to bed at 5am so at 9.20am wasn't up and with cat - she nearly howled the place down and DS, DD and DH all rushed to her at the same time worried but she was just being her usual diva self and just required DH. So he got very little sleep last night.

DH and DD just bought the single bed in from the car and the cat is very happy that she has a new single bed, its so good of DH to keep bringing things for her.

They've both gone down to old house, we pay DD £10 an hour to help and hopefully they will bring back chest of drawers. Then only a small folding table and chairs from garden there to bring back and rubbish to clear. We have a rubbish collection there tomorrow afternoon, just hope it can all get done in time. Trying to rush everything through incase we get Tier 5.

Trying to get out of DS what he wants for his birthday but he still can't think of anything. He's really frugal with money and hates any wasteage and also doesn't like surprises - may need to give him cash again but he normally just saves that or takes him until August to think of 1 thing - invariably a 4 foot soft toy.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 01/01/2021 16:08

@Deathraystare Happy Birthday for tomorrow!

milliememum · 01/01/2021 16:18

Happy new year!!! My New Years resolution is to post on threads I have been lurking on 😬 I have been thoroughly calmed reading all your news for a while now and would like to join in with my uneventful day, dh, myself, ds1, ds2 and dd1 have eaten lunch, fed the birds and kept the sofa and tv company, oh and eaten chocolate!!

Deathraystare · 01/01/2021 16:22

HeartsTrumpDiamonds

Thank you!!!. I don't mind working my birthday (or Christmas come to that!)

MissConductUS · 01/01/2021 16:41

Welcome, @milliememum and thanks for delurking and sharing your news. I'm so glad you've found our boring news calming. What birds have you fed?

I've downloaded and installed the software we use for tax preparation for tax year 2020 and am now trying to decide what to have for lunch. There will be pizza and cake later, so I have to go easy on lunch.

Happy Birthday for tomorrow DeathRay Normally I would say its not great to be working on your birthday but this year its probably your only chance of seeing someone outside your household / doing anything, well if you are Tier 4 which most people are now.

I'm not sure about posting on all MN threads you read rather than lurking but this one is definitely worth posting on as everyone is nice and kind on here. Xmas Grin I have more the opposite issue of some threads I should resist posting on as its going to turn into a fight whatever anyone posts. I've hidden a lot of categories.

EggNogPegg · 01/01/2021 16:48

Welcome @milliememum. Thank you for your suitably mundane contribution. Nice to meet lurkers.

I have decided to do RED January. Based on the disaster of my last run, I decided that I would do a gentle 1/2k today. However I felt fabulous and wound up doing 5k with no issues at all. My pace also picked up noticeably when Proud Mary kicked in on my earbuds and I must have looked a loon as I fought with myself not to dance along whilst grinning madly. Am now wrapped in one of the new gigantic bath sheets and considering writing some more of my essay.
DH and the DC are watching the original Willy Wonka movie.

Thanks for the Woolly Hugs info @Spudlet, I will look it up.

@Silkiechickscat. What on earth are you doing with all this furniture? Do you now have doubles of everything?

Spudlet · 01/01/2021 16:56

DFiL is very keen on birds and had many bird feeders in his garden. Some of them are in cages to deter big birds and squirrels, I banged my head on one once and saw stars - they’re apparently welded out of girders! He also has several up long poles, which he greases to deter rats and squirrels - leading to several confused looking squirrels sliding gently down said greasy polesGrin

Sunbird24 · 01/01/2021 16:57

Birthday wishes all round and welcome to new posters!
I’ve not even got dressed today, only really got up to make myself a hot chocolate - it was a white chocolate bomb, with strawberry powder and marshmallows in. You drop it in your mug whole then put the hot milk over the top so the chocolate shell melts and the contents are released. Dreamy...

soddingkitten · 01/01/2021 17:06

I took my boys out for a circular walk. DS2 moaned or deliberately annoyed his brother the whole way and ruined an otherwise beautiful sunset for me. DS1 suggested just the two of us go together tomorrow. We went together a few days ago near to sun down and he said me stopping to take photos had made him properly appreciate the sunset, as he’d not attention to it before. In practice, a walk just with DS1 will never fly. DS2 will be too sad about being left out and it will cause a row. It was a lovely sunset today. I just wish I could have muted DS2 for 10 mins. 😏

milliememum · 01/01/2021 17:07

Thank you for you kind welcome! We have a resident robin family, the babies appeared during lockdown 1 and have returned almost daily to feed and bathe in the garden, soothes my soul of a morning when they come land next to me and watch me putting the washing out 😀

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 01/01/2021 17:15

Robins are lovely - my DGM had a family nesting on her balcony. The parent came into the living room.

This might be a tiny bit exciting but, we have finally finished the accounts for 2020 and set up the budget (well a spreadsheet) for 2021.

Silkiechickscat · 01/01/2021 17:20

EggNog We've only had 4 pieces of furniture down at old house (plus loats of bits and pieces which mainly need throwing out) - the dining table and chairs is an extra one which is new but our one here is 10 years plus old and worn out so old one needs throwing out / rehoming if anyone wants a free worn out one. Then there's a garden table and chairs which is just the one from here so that's fine. Then there's a chest of drawers and a single bed - we don't have an obvious place for those as the old lady who owned this house before got stairs altered and made it 2 bed from 3 bed. There's space but not a room - in time we will get it altered but its grade 2 listed so will take months to get approval. DS won't use a bedroom or a bed and lives in living room on the sofa - he was originally in bedroom at old house but one night we had to move him to sofa one night as having work done and he refused to go upstairs or to a bed since. Cat was delighted and claimed a bed and bedroom for herself at old house. Nothing is normal is our house.

So yes we need to find space for an extra dining table, single bed and chest of drawers - the old dining table will will rehome / get rid of but concentrating on clearing old house atm incase there's a sudden ban on us going down there as its now classed as a second home house sale. Even getting rid of old dining table isn't that easy - the council won't collect until Feb, skips are book a slot and only one per week but don't say what the week is and are booked out for a week or so and Freecycle almost always ends up with people cancelling 20 times or not being covid aware. DH says here people often leave them outside with a note saying take if want and things go but not sure in this weather. The old paint cans are the biggest issue though and many millions of those. My life is furniture and rubbish management plans atm.

Taswama · 01/01/2021 17:39

Happy new year, oh calm ones.

Played Risk with DS2 earlier. He let me set up according to the rules but then just wanted to kill my soldiers with his rather throw dice etc.

DP is making roast beef for supper. I made the Yorkshire pudding batter and peeled the potatoes earlier.

LynnThese4reSEXPEOPLE · 01/01/2021 17:52

Thanks for the welcome! It's been a while since I joined in as I went back to work. Then into self isolation. Then back to work for a day. Then self isolation. Then work, and now I have COVID. It's been an irritating month....

MissConductUS · 01/01/2021 17:56

Well done on your run Eggy. During pre podcast days I listened to music while I ran and it's definitely a motivator. I had a Sony Walkman that played cassette tapes at one point. I'll have to give Spotify a try tomorrow.

Thanks for coming back Lynn. Are you symptomatic?

Champagneforeveryone · 01/01/2021 18:38

I have spent the greater part of the first day of the new year in bed as I'm working another night shift later. Unavoidable but I feel a pang that I am missing out on innumerable opportunities for self improvement though I'm at least warm

DH has petitioned heavily and we will therefore change the bed shortly and attach the lighter of the two duvets to the heavier of the two. This has the bonus of keeping you toasty and warm but is very difficult to get out of as it's akin to having a roll of carpet on top of you.

It was minus seven when I left work this morning. As a softy Southerner I'm not sure if I've ever seen it that cold. DDog3 detests the cold and will only wee under extreme duress in such conditions, so is probably secretly thrilled with the fractured toe. DH takes the boys out and she snuggles back into her cushions with a smug look on her face Grin

Spudlet · 01/01/2021 18:51

Welcome @LynnThese4reSEXPEOPLE (excellent username btw). Hope you aren’t feeling too unwell. Sounds like you’ve had a fairly vexing time of it recently!

LynnThese4reSEXPEOPLE · 01/01/2021 18:56

@MissConductUS @Spudlet no, I have the dull and unexciting version (thank goodness). A bit of muscle ache, a touch of loss of smell and a slight cough.

I made some garlic potatoes to go with steak this evening.

@Champagneforeveryone night shifts are so disorienting aren't they? What are you going to have for breakfast?

Silkiechickscat · 01/01/2021 19:12

DH and DD returned with the chest of drawers and DH has just moved the single bed base in pieces up to the airing cupboard room. He's just had to stop as the cat has just howled for him but think he had just finished. She's settled in on the mattress even though its propped up on a chair and she's at high risk of falling off - cat would like to point out if she falls off that was planned.

And now what to have for dinner.

MissConductUS · 01/01/2021 19:18

Lynn can you explain your username? I can't puzzle it out, probably because I'm a Yank.

Looked out of the landing window this morning and saw two young foxes wandering round the back garden! I've suspected them for a while, as the dogs bark in the late evening and used to dive out through the dog flap at night; until we started locking it.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 01/01/2021 19:48

Just taken DMum home, she was with us for New Years last night. We had a really lovely evening, had a nice dinner, played cards, played charades, watched the non-festivities from Times Square etc. And I managed to avoid a hangover this morning Smile

Just helping to hold down the sofa now in front of some rubbish DH has on the TV telly. Probably leftovers for dinner tonight. Or maybe pizza.
