Just heard some fireworks going off here but at least I could see them out of the window and they only lasted 2 minutes, quite pretty and our thatched roof is fine, phew. Rabbit and cat don't care at all, the silkies have been fine and not too loud or long.

Nydj · 31/12/2020 22:00

Great news about your brother @EggNogPegg. The Chinese food was ordered at lunchtime for evening delivery and it arrived albeit ‘37 minutes late!’ as DS kept exclaiming.we have eaten what we could and are looking forward to the remainder as a leftover meal.

Fireworks are continuous here now.

LynnThese4reSEXPEOPLE · 31/12/2020 22:24

I have a mouth ulcer. I should put some occlusive paste on it, but the paste is upstaira and I'm downstairs.

soddingkitten · 31/12/2020 22:27

sodding, you have hosin sauce in the house? I had a hard time finding it at the supermarket.

Yes. Two bottles. 🙂 We had roast duck and pancakes earlier in the week.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 31/12/2020 22:29

Extremely quiet here - for inner city Berlin.
DB sent a picture of his dinner, which looked absolutely delicious.
DH is still doing his accounts and DS is quietly giggling to himself

Hairydilemma · 31/12/2020 22:36

I’ve tidied out my kitchen cupboards this week and bought some plastic baskets to go in them.

I now have a basket of flours, a basket of sugars and a basket of herbs and spices.

This makes me disproportionately excited.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 31/12/2020 22:40

Hairy Though I admit, this is exciting, you have to calm down. You over excite yourself, and what then?

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 31/12/2020 22:41

@Prokupatuscrakedatus I love Berlin! I spent 4 months there as a student back in 1987 when it was still West Berlin, been back a few times since. It has changed a lot!

We are very lucky with our local supermarket. Things like hoisin sauce (and sesame oil, teriyaki sauce, sriracha etc etc) are staples but then again Toronto is very multicultural.

Just about to put the finishing touches on dinner. DD2 is making the mashed potatoes as we speak.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 31/12/2020 22:42

@soddingkitten duck pancakes are one of my favourite things.

Hairydilemma · 31/12/2020 22:50

Prokupatuscrakedatus well exactly, there’s not really anywhere to go from that level of excitement is there?!

And apologies, having read some more of the thread I think I just jumped in with my news (over-excited, you see) without saying hi or asking to join - v poor show. I blame the Prosecco - and just 2020 in general eroding my manners.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 31/12/2020 22:54

@HeartsTrumpDiamonds - I came in 1986 bc. DH.

There is a chopper hovering overhead - this usually means police or press.

Sunbird24 · 31/12/2020 22:57

@Hairydilemma don’t worry, I did that too! My excuse is that I was in the first 2 or 3 of these threads so I’m not really new... 🤭

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 31/12/2020 23:02

Come and tell me your dull and unexciting news 9: Calmly through the day
Prokupatuscrakedatus · 31/12/2020 23:11

Hairy If you take time to calm down properly, you might have a go at your freezer - labeling stuff - in January.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 31/12/2020 23:13

@SilkiesnowchicksandXmastreecat - I love your cat!!

And a very good year to you all!!

By the way, it is police overhead and Berlin is almsot silent. The student flatshare nextdoor celebrated with extra long sparklers!

halfpasteleven · 31/12/2020 23:20

Happy new year to you all,
@EggNogPegg I'm so glad to hear your brother is home. You must be relieved.

I'm trying to stay up til 12... feel like I've hit a wall now though so will set an alarm just in case
DS (8) is determined to stay up and I want to wish him a happy new year on time for his sake.

WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 31/12/2020 23:27

I brushed my cat. She looks really silky.

EggNogPegg · 01/01/2021 00:10

Happy New Year you wonderful lot. Thank you for keeping things calm.

Welcome to our newcomers. @MissConductUS will be along shortly to welcome you better than I. She is a true hostess (host? Is hostess a bit 50s?)

DH and I played Walking Dead Monopoly. It must have brought me luck as for the first time in our twenty year relationship, I beat him. That might be too exciting for this thread, so to calm you down again I will tell you that my new bath sheets arrived today. They are a good few inches bigger than the last lot. I'm not complaining, though I do run the risk of tripping over them as I am short-of-arse.

SilkiesnowchicksandXmastreecat · 01/01/2021 00:11

Happy New Year everyone! Welcome to 2021 to those in the UK! We are just drinking prosecco and having trifle.

DH wished Silkiecat Happy new year before me but I knew I come second to her, glad you can't be left for a cat. Xmas Grin

EggNogPegg · 01/01/2021 00:12

Lovely to see SilkieCat @SilkiesnowchicksandXmastreecat. She looks the picture of sweetness...

Frownette · 01/01/2021 00:12

Happy new year!

SilkiesnowchicksandXmastreecat · 01/01/2021 00:39

DS managed to stay awake for NY but fell asleep before the trifle. DD is nocturnal and had some prosecco.

MissConductUS · 01/01/2021 00:43

Welcome @LynnThese4reSEXPEOPLE, @Hairydilemma and @WishingHopingThinkingPraying and thanks for joining us and sharing your news.

Happy New Year to all of our UK posters! It's still just 1925 here so we've just finished dinner, which was burgers on the grill and leftover mac & cheese. DD, who usually wants something different had grilled teriyaki chicken and oven-baked onion rings. None of us drink, so the rest of the evening looks pretty quiet.

As the quasi-official host or hostess here (and I agree, Eggy, hostess does sound quite dated) please let me offer a few thoughts.

2020 has been a heartbreaking and exhausting year. Granted, worse of some than others, but still awful and fearful for all of us. 2021 promises to be much better, particularly for us in the US now that we've shown Donald Trump the door. Medicine has delivered a small miracle in the form of multiple vaccines and interventions and we are much, much better at treating covid now than we were in the beginning. So here's to 2021. May we and our families stay safe until we see the other side of the pandemic.

I've given a bit of thought to these threads in the last few days. So many MN threads are mostly people piling on and shouting at each other until everyone gets tired and moves on to the next thread. This one "has legs" as they say. I think it's because by sharing our mundane news we share our lives, our challenges, and our small victories, and in the process, we have become friends. That has real value for people, particularly as we endure so much isolation and limitations on normal human contact. We are social beings at our core. We have listened to each other and offered a bit of kindness and support for each other. That is why we stay and why we have newcomers, who wander in to sit by the fire of fellowship.

Well done people. It's been an honor to host the last few of these threads and I am much the richer for being welcomed into your lives.
