British class system

I've watched enough British telly to get the difference between working, middle and upper class but then i read on here about 'upper middle class'.. what's that? And is there a lower middle class and a medium middle class? Does this then apply to the other classes. So for example an "upper working class" or a "lower upper class"

I know it's a contentious topic on here because the Brits get accused of being obsessed with class (i disagree with that) but it would be interesting to hear what attributes people need to fit into the class within the class.

I could probably Wikipedia this 🤔

You really have no idea of some of the basic concepts of class living in Dublin?Or is this just to start off the usual 'how terrible that british people arnt educated in every niche subject of my country' stuff?

fandigo · 28/12/2020 07:51

@user1471565182 can you elaborate on that? In what way have i demonstrated "no idea of some of the basic concepts of class living in dublin?".

As for your second statement, isn't it fairly opposite I'm saying the exact opposite? That i don't know many of the niche things about your country.

Fandigo I also agree with your comments about dogs! In dc's private school the must have middle class accessory is the white fluffy designer dog... The school run is literally full of cockapoos, cavapoos, cavachons, labradoodles etc... Those types of dogs cost a fortune at the moment so they are another status symbol. My dc would love one but we won't pay those prices

Upper middle say secrtry instead of secretary, chopping the ends of many words - porcln instead of porcelain for example.
The men often wear unattractive corduroy trousers in odd colours.
Many, many things, too much to write in a post.
Jilly Cooper’s book on class is bang on.

NowellSingWe · 28/12/2020 10:18

I disagree, FreshFreesias- it's very of its time, and is now forty years (?) old.
Kate Fox's book is very well written, and exhibits much humour.

That’s somewhat dated now, surely? In addition, Jilly Cooper’s claim to fame was writing trashy literature.

I wonder how long the anyone will be willing to put up with labs now the mutts live indoors. Growing up we had labs that lived in the out houses - I was shocked to discover that you could get dogs that didn't smell or or lose vast amounts of hair on a daily basis - as much as I loved labs, when I found out there was an alternative I didn't love them that much.

All dogs cost a fortune at the moment regardless of breed, the mixed breed poos might be a little bit more but I was shocked to discover even a lowly whippet pup can command up to £4k in this market. Lockdown puppies are indeed the new status symbol!😁

You sound delightful.

@Janegrey333 as do you dear!😂

Brightonbabe5 · 28/12/2020 15:08

Janet Grey did you buy one?! Dc would love one of those fluffy dogs but adorable as they are I can't justify the prices & DH is protesting solely based on the fact that the designer breeds are the new middle class accessory....

fandigo · 28/12/2020 16:44

@Brightonbabe5 i would have loved a labradoodle or cockapoo but they seem to be breeds that often come from puppy farms. And there's no guarantee you'll get one that's all shaggy dog/mildly scruffy looking. You can end up with a very poodley dog.

Fandigo I love the cockapoos! DH is so against them due to his "principles" that most of the school have one or something similar😬
