What age do kids have a TV in their bedrooms?

Just that really.

Mine had tvs configured only for videos/dvds (my dc are adults now). They always played downstairs until they were of secondary age and did not have computers in their rooms. They were very bad sleepers and early risers so we would often go and hop in with them and watch a couple of episodes of Farthing Wood or Button Moon.
I don't think a tv in the bedroom had any effect on them development-wise or socially but they were never up there in the day and had a very full life otherwise.

It’s not fake.

SellFridges · 26/12/2020 19:52

Ours won’t until teenage at least. We don’t have one.

I’m sure we will start allowing iPads in their rooms at some point and I assume they’ll use those. We have two lounges, both with TV’s so they game on those.

DownToTheSeaAgain · 26/12/2020 19:54

Never

dingledongle · 26/12/2020 19:54

Not fake, welcome to come and see.

We are in Tier 4 though Grin

bluebluezoo · 26/12/2020 19:54

We only have one tv. I don’t like tv’s in bedrooms.

Dh campaigned for one for ages, talked about lazy weekends watching tv in bed etc. So I had one for a bit. It disturbed my sleep as dh would stay up late with it, then fall asleep and the light would wake me up at stupid o’clock. As for lazy mornings, with two kids who get up at 5:30 and me working shifts that was never going to happen.

So I got rid and he agrees we sleep better without.

Kids have devices if they want to watch anything. Plus with tablets and phones I can set them to switch off at a reasonable time.

MillieEpple · 26/12/2020 19:55

Both my children have screens in their room. They use them to watch tv, you tube, do gaming and do homework. They were invaluable for homeschool during lockdown and my child with SEN does blended learning all the time. They were 9 and 11 when we set this up.
You need very good parental controls so they cant be used during the night basically.

Mammyloveswine · 26/12/2020 20:00

Agree @funfunfunfunfun !

Mine are turning 5 and 3, getting bunk beds and we got a new tv for Xmas so they are getting the living room one.. with a DVD player and no access to anything else!

We have a tv in our room too!

PleasantVille · 26/12/2020 20:02

@funfunfunfunfun

All these people saying they don't have TVs in bedrooms is bollocks. Most kids these days like to play games and need a tv. I'd say 95% of my children's friends have TVs in bedrooms. I have one in mine and love watching films in bed or watching a film on a weekend morning with the kids.

Must be another fake Mumsnet thing 🙄.

Never and I don't either, feel free to come round and check through the windows in a socially distant manner
Bluewavescrashing · 26/12/2020 20:04

Lol at fake @funfunfunfunfun

BasinHaircut · 26/12/2020 20:05

I don’t like TVs in bedrooms either but will let DS have one if he wants one from maybe 13?

He is only 7 just now and already watches too much tv so I will discourage it for as long as possible. We have 2 TVs downstairs so he can play his video games or watch his programmes/YouTube in the other room if he doesn’t want to hang out with us.

I might feel differently if we had less space and/or more kids!

TechnoDino · 26/12/2020 20:07

Never!

ShinyGreenElephant · 26/12/2020 20:08

Never but DD11 is allowed to watch films on her laptop up there during school holidays or if shes not well. If there was a TV up there permanently surely they would have it on all the time? Maybe other peoples kids have better self control than mine

MispyM · 26/12/2020 20:08

funfunfunfunfun

We don't. Having one in the bedroom never really occurred to me, tbh.

DS may want one if he's a bit older. My instinctual response is "never but we'll see. Probably also depends on whether his classmates have one.

And he luckily won't be allowed to have one at school. So there's that...

MispyM · 26/12/2020 20:11

But as I said, it lucky isn't an issue (yet).

Which may very well change when he is older.

But I personally just wouldn't watch TV in bed... I prefer to watch TV from the sofa.

CurlsandCurves · 26/12/2020 20:14

No here.

Eldests room isn’t big enough anway. But as much as they can have their iPads, phones etc in their rooms, I like all tech out of there at bedtime. It all charges on the landing on silent so they can access it the absolute second they awake, which is apparently essential.

PS4 is in communal space and after a recent incident with DS2 I’m very glad that’s the case.

FraughtwithGin · 26/12/2020 20:19

They do not, ever.
The bedroom is not a place for the television, it is a place for sleeping, learning, reading or generally being peaceful and quiet.

TragedyHands · 26/12/2020 20:26

Mine never have

Agoodbriskwalk · 26/12/2020 20:33

No TVs in any bedrooms in my house and never will be.

None of my friends have TVs in their children's bedrooms.

All these people saying they don't have TVs in bedrooms is bollocks. Most kids these days like to play games and need a tv.

My kids don't have consoles either. We have one console that connects to our ONE TV - which is in the living room.

Everybodysaycheese · 26/12/2020 20:41

No TV's in bedrooms in this house either. None of my friend's children have them in their rooms - can assure you it's not fake!

Friendsoneuptown · 26/12/2020 20:44

aged 11. Can watch films only on it.

electronVolt · 26/12/2020 20:44

TVs in all bedrooms is very....2005

Don’t most people just have iPads and laptops and stuff now?

Sales of TVs are falling, and have been for a few years.

Not fake. Bit weird you can’t consider not everyone is the same as your social group.

No TV in our bedroom (never had one since moving out of parents house). Just never needed one as we prefer the lounge.

No TV in DD’s room now after she had one for 2 years but didn’t use it and prefers her laptop.

The only console we own is an old Wii and it’s currently boxed up unused in the spare room. Nobody games here.

So no not fake. Just different to you.

kowari · 26/12/2020 20:46

When they buy it and pay the licence, and live elsewhere.

gingajewel · 26/12/2020 20:46

It was my four year old dd’s main present for Christmas this year!
