And the sausage stuffing is still safely in the fridge as I forgot it so I'm drinking wine and not tidying up Angry
Kids are happy to have had spuds and gravy, DH is happy to have dinner cooked for him, I'm just cross with myself. I'm usually a pretty competent cook.
Rant over Grin
Hope everyone else had a good day. 2020 has been utterly shite HmmGrin

Our bird is still in the fridge, not even started on dinner yet Blush

vanillandhoney · 25/12/2020 20:03

Our Yorkshire's didn't rise Grin

Oh no!. My cat came home crying and not able to put any weight on her foot so a 2 1/2 hour round trip to the vet and £125 later and still no idea what happened to her but she has stopped crying!
Awwwwwwwww! 😿 Poor little soul. Has she at least got some painkillers? ThanksWine

@Inclinedtochatter

My mum set fire to the gravy and my sisters dog pissed all over the carpet when we pulled the crackers!
Blimey your Mum ‘set fire to the gravy‘?respect ✊ Xmas Grin Was this instead of the Christmas pud?
Crunchymum · 25/12/2020 20:06

I had a roast potato emergency (par boiled them a bit too much and had to decant to another baking tin as they weren't cooking in the mush) and the main turkey had to go back in whilst we ate the pork / turkey breast joint but overall it went OK.

£30 worth of turkey to be eaten over next few days. Next year I'll just do two of turkey breast joints as they were lovely, cooked in exact time they were meant to and took up a lot less space than the turkey!!

Cook turkey the day before avoids dramas on the day. The 3 DCs did dinner this year and it was bloody fabulous. I have handed over the baton. Only thing they forgot was to put the blankets on the pigs but we can live with that

ShipshapeShore · 25/12/2020 20:09

My roast potatoes stayed resolutely pale and uninteresting. They were cooked and a bit crispy but they just wouldn't do properly! The expensive chicken from the farm was very tasty though.

TipseyTorvey · 25/12/2020 20:10

I managed everything perfectly for once and I suspect this is due to the lack of guests. As it was just the four of us I wasn't at all stressed so remembered everything except the crackers but we'll use those later I suppose. Every other year with in-laws or family guests there's been a disaster of some kind. Somehow trying to ensure guests are watered and snack fed and children behaving perfectly etc means I burn something usually.

user127819 · 25/12/2020 20:10

@DayBath

Cooked it all by 10am and microwaved it when we were ready to sit down. Mumsnet will clutch their handbags in shock but I want my kids to have good memories of me playing with them and interacting with the family, not locked in the kitchen being a sweaty angry mess!! Nobody in our house minds, the roasties were still crispy after microwaving so it all worked out fine.

If I had posh guests I would carve at the table and try and time it all perfectly but for me, DH and the kids it made the whole day so much more relaxed to have it ready done.

We cooked and carved the turkey yesterday and just reheated the slices in gravy today. We do the same with chicken and beef joints for ordinary roast dinners. Much easier than carving at the table and it's juicier too (especially beef).
RandomMess · 25/12/2020 20:10

We had a buffet of random things but we forgot the pigs in blankets!!! Had them for tea with more random buffet items.

Georgieporgie29 · 25/12/2020 20:11

Our turkey was still frozen Blush ended up having to cook from still part frozen. Didn’t eat until after 5 and we usually eat about 2.30, luckily no guests this year so wasn’t a big problem. We were all starving by the time it arrived though Grin

BertieBotts · 25/12/2020 20:11

Hahaha I had a bit of a roastie fail too - parboiled too long and then they didn't really crisp up, plus DS1 complained they were the wrong kind of roast potato :o meanwhile DS2 ate his own bodyweight in potatoes and everyone else's carrots.

Pigs in blankets were a bit underdone as well. Everything else was lovely.

DennisTMenace · 25/12/2020 20:11

If it was up to me, I would have had roast potatoes, Yorkshires and gravy for Christmas dinner. Sod the turkey, no one likes.it anyway. It wasn't up to me though.

Mangerfield · 25/12/2020 20:11

I've seen about 5 people say they forgot about the pigs in blankets today!
To me they are the whole point of Christmas!

DfEisashambles · 25/12/2020 20:14

Flipped a full plated dinner high into the air, usually I’d be so cross but I laughed and drank wine before cleaning it up.

maddiemookins16mum · 25/12/2020 20:14

My roast potatoes were on the ‘overcooked’ side. I forgot the cauliflower cheese and I scorched my gravy.
That said, my slow cooker turkey breast was divine and so easy. As was my Gammon (done yesterday).

PodgeBod · 25/12/2020 20:14

My yorkshires were so late they were an after dinner snack (they were also flat)

andyoldlabour · 25/12/2020 20:15

"My mum set fire to the gravy"

I like a bit of reduced down alcohol in the gravy, but what did she use - napalm?

Justlovedogs · 25/12/2020 20:15

Cooked turkey & stuffing yesterday, in the oven warming now. Just waiting for roasties (good old Aunt Bessie... Xmas Grin) & veg then we'll be ready.
Merry Christmas one and all. Sorry to say, I'm loving reading all your minor disaster stories. Respect to the lady that set fire to the gravy!

Fishfingersandwichplease · 25/12/2020 20:16

Another success story - def putting it down to only 4 of us having dinner. Even managed to warm the plates up! Loads of leftovers, roll on Boxing Day!

ReggieCat · 25/12/2020 20:17

I didn't read the instructions on my posh veg selection properly when they were delivered last week. Didn't notice it said cook from chilled, not from frozen.

On the plus side, I have learned that fish finger sandwiches with garlic mayonnaise are bloody wonderful.

Set FIRE to the gravy?!?!

I want to know how much alcohol she puts in your gravy?! Sounds awesome! Grin

Dagnabit · 25/12/2020 20:24

I cooked the turkey crown yesterday and carved it today. Also half cooked the roasties yesterday and finished them off today. Ready made cauliflower cheese/pigs in blankets/Yorkshire puds/fresh stuffings. And fresh veg and sprouts with bacon and garlic butter. It was easy to do and bloody lovely! I can cook/make these things myself but prefer to keep things simple Smile

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 25/12/2020 20:25

You CAN'T just say this and then fuck off! Grin Come back and tell us in detail what happened!
