Drinking a whole bottle of gin

A friend of mine mentioned the other day that she drank a whole bottle of gin in one evening. She was on a zoom with a friend having ‘Friday night drinks’ and said she didn’t notice how much she was drinking until the whole bottle had gone. Does anyone else think that sounds like a worrying amount? She lives alone and recently lost her job and I’m a bit concerned that she might not be coping very well. It sounds alarming to me but I’m not much of a drinker myself. I’m just a bit worried about her. To avoid drip feeding, I don’t have other specific reasons to think she isn’t coping.

I'd be throwing up with a full bottle. Is she drinking a lot Maybe?

Course it depends on the size of the bottle but I couldn't hack that much gin, I'd be cross eyed.

Mammma91 · 24/12/2020 20:05

Personally, i think a full bottle of gin is a lot. I would maybe remind her she has a friendly ear if she needs a chat. It may have been a once off.

SisterAgatha · 24/12/2020 20:06

It must be a little bottle of gin liquor from Lidl or something with barely any alcohol content. No one could neck a bottle of the proper stuff in one evening.

VicMackey · 24/12/2020 20:08

Was it gin (40%) designed to be drink with a lot of mixer/ice or those gin ‘liquer ’ drinks (20%) ?
If it was the 40% I am surprised anyone could drink a whole bottle

HollowTalk · 24/12/2020 20:09

It's about 30 units, isn't it? It's 40 for a litre. I would be really ill with that.

NiceGerbil · 24/12/2020 20:09

Yes they could unfortunately.

Yes it is an awful lot. I'd be very worried.

NiceGerbil · 24/12/2020 20:11

30 units is a couple of bottles of wineish.

I'd have thought it would be 40 though.

Yes of course it can be done.

madcatladyforever · 24/12/2020 20:11

I would actually die after drinking that.

GingerBreadNurse · 24/12/2020 20:12

Depends on a lot of factors.

A 700ml bottle is 28 single measures/14 doubles. Having worked in a pub in the past, I've known a few women who could put that away of a Friday/Saturday drinking session.

It could be sligh hyperbole too, an already opened bottle/nearly finished it. The real deal 40%+ or a gin liqueur etc.

NiceGerbil · 24/12/2020 20:13

Anyway numbers aside it's a lot and yes it can be done on a night.

It's a lot to put away though.

midnightstar66 · 24/12/2020 20:14

Depends on the size of the bottle, the percentage of the gin (lots of people drink the gin liqueur) and of course the individual alcohol tolerance. She's maybe had a stinking hangover. If it's a once off then I'd not be too concerned

GruffyLove · 24/12/2020 20:15

Flipping heck that’s a lot I wouldn’t be standing and be very ill for a long time after that!

freeingNora · 24/12/2020 20:19

That's very close to alcohol poisoning you're very right to be worried

OatcakeCravings · 24/12/2020 20:19

I could easily put away a bottle of gin in an evening. I wouldn’t as I’d be so I’ll the next day, but I’m typing this after 2 bottles of Prosecco and a bottle of wine with my friend this afternoon (she is a single parent and bubbled with me before anyone asks!)

I’m not an alcoholic, though I’m Scottish!

LawnFever · 24/12/2020 20:22

Yes it’s a lot but like other posters have said depends on how big a bottle, if it’s a gin liquor it’s different to gin spirit and also it sounds like a one off so I’d be inclined to remember, but not do anything right now

Itsyoouu · 24/12/2020 20:24

Scottish also and can drink that on occasion no bother!

Southwest12 · 24/12/2020 20:24

I've done that before, a whole bottle of Tanquary and two glasses of prosecco and I was so sick the next day. It's fairly easy to do if you are pouring home measures and not taking much notice. As long as it's a one off that is.

Aquamarine1029 · 24/12/2020 20:26

I would want to die if I drank that much.

willowmelangell · 24/12/2020 20:29

You have only mentioned this one time it has come up so it seems like a one off. Long afternoon, long year, home measures, something like that maybe.

WhatTiggersDoBest · 24/12/2020 20:35

Oh I did this once with a bottle of Jack Daniel's. When I was 19. At Christmas. It was a BAD plan and I was phenomenally ill, all I remember from the next day was having to do chores and go to my Christmas job with the most stonking hangover of my life. Never drank that much ever again. It won't kill her but the hangover will make her think twice before doing it again.

Ilovesandwiches · 24/12/2020 20:41

I had half a bottle the other day and was throwing up for the whole of the next day!

DukeOfEarlGrey · 24/12/2020 20:44

Ok, thanks all - this confirms that it’s not just me who thinks it’s worrying or at least not the norm. I’m going to hope it was a one off or exaggerated like some have suggested but will also keep an eye out for any more signs. We’re not that close so not easy for me to ask her directly without seeming invasive like I would with a closer friend, but I care about her so will risk being told to keep my nose out if I think it might be needed.

I can drink 3/4 of a bottle of spirit, I've done it before. Wouldn't recommend it though. If it's a one off I wouldn't worry, as I said I've done it before and I don't have a drink problem.

CrazyToast · 24/12/2020 21:15

Yeah it's doable, especially over time and when it is that pink gin, I nearly did it last night and am paying for it today.

CrazyToast · 24/12/2020 21:16

It's not grounds for concern if rarely happens. It's just a bad idea!
