@inappropriateraspberry

Most families with young children have some sort of musical instrument with bells on, or a Xmas decoration that will jingle.
DD has found an old Fireman Sam truck in the shed Xmas Grin

I tend towards the cynical and my gut reaction to the when I saw it a week or two ago was very much ‘wtf?’. But since then we’ve gone into tier 4 and our Christmas plans to travel to see my family have been ruined. Five year old DS was disappointed as he worships Grandma, but of course is incredibly excited about Christmas. So when my neighbours (who almost all have had their own plans curtailed as well) said that we should do it at 6, each with a drink I was delighted and jumped at it. He will love it. And why not? It’s not late, it’s not fireworks and it will make children who have missed a lot this year happy. I actually feel a bit embarrassed at my previous negativity, as I think it may have been borne of a bit of snobbery if I’m very honest with myself.

Bells or not - Merry Christmas all!

I’m at work until 8 so I’ll give it a miss.

That'll be the cat in his element then. He already thought the NHS one was clap for cats and nearly dislocated his neck nosying
The first time he was sauntering back in when everyone started clapping which is why he thinks it's for him Hmm

OchonAgusOchonO · 24/12/2020 15:20

It’s as if they thought the clap was penance for the rule breaking

I thought the clap was penance for having unprotected sex.....

AliasGrape · 24/12/2020 15:25

I'm on record as loathing organised fun and can be quite cynical too. But I'm going to jingle my bells and I'm actually looking forward to it. What can I say, it's what this year has done to me.

reprehensibleme · 24/12/2020 15:29

I'll probably do it - there are 2 small children on our lane who are very excited about it, so I think most of the neighbours are making an effort for them.

madcatladyforever · 24/12/2020 15:29

I'm a pagan and ex morris dancer so I have a whole load of bells but I will not be ringing them, I think I'd be murdered by the neighbours.

perditasugarplum · 24/12/2020 15:30

We have no bells but I do have a large gong, shall I get that out instead? Grin

Redcrayons · 24/12/2020 15:33

I have no Christmas cheer to spread so I won’t be.

I do have some Christmas bells though (left over from a nativity play).

I didn’t mind the NHS one, although towards the end it was mostly an excuse to have a chinwag with the neighbours for half an hour.

PhilCornwall1 · 24/12/2020 15:39

Oh FFS, I can think of 3 or 4 around here that will be doing it.

I'm planning on being in an alcoholic coma by 6pm, I've made an early start!!

zigaziga · 24/12/2020 15:41

@Sandsnake I feel a bit like this.
Every time I read a Facebook note about this bell ringing malarkey I rolled my eyes so much.. But now I’m thinking meh, it’s something to do ... and DC will love it.
I won’t make it into a big thing about it helping Father Christmas fly though, I draw the line there. If we do it I’ll just say people are ringing bells because it’s Christmas Eve.

pipnchops · 24/12/2020 15:41

We'll be going out in the back garden and jingling bells at 6pm. It'll be lovely if we hear others doing it too. I don't see the harm.

AldiAisleofCrap · 24/12/2020 15:41

No.

MaryLeeOnHigh · 24/12/2020 16:15

I don't intend to take part in this, but surely the answer to a lack of bells is just to go on a church bell website and broadcast that? If you want make it loud, I guess you could connect it to a bluetooth speaker.

MrsMiaWallis · 24/12/2020 16:18

@missymoomoomoomoomoo

My OH is a massive bellend. I might just push him outside at 6pm
🤣🤣
maddiemookins16mum · 24/12/2020 16:44

God no way.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 24/12/2020 17:22

Oh is it for loneliness/Community now? Orignally to help Santa fly..sweet though. Not sure about the singing carols or doing it again New Years eve at midnight as has been suggested

halcyondays · 24/12/2020 17:26

No but I would if I had anyone else in the house that would do it with me. I’d feel a bit daft standing there on my own.

Is it meant to lure Santa down, like Vic and Bob's 'dove from above'?

FairyFairy · 24/12/2020 17:36

@SquitMcJit

What fresh hell is this?

Beat me to it.

Stretchandsnap · 24/12/2020 17:38

Hell no Xmas Smile

dudsville · 24/12/2020 17:41

Aha, I'm just glad to have heard about it on here first. I'll never forget that first clap. I was alone in my garden completely oblivious and baffled as to what was going on. I'm sure if I were to suddenly hear bells I'd be at the window looking for a sleigh!
