How much do you tip your postman

Just realised we've got no cash and are isolating so can't go out

There's a fiver in DSs money box but is that an insult rather than a tip ?!

... I don’t Blush didn’t realise this was a thing

GroundAlmonds · 24/12/2020 12:51

We don’t. It’s that a bit Margot Leadbetter? Patronising.

We do Christmas card and a box of chocolates.

wowfudge · 24/12/2020 12:52

Something's better than nothing. We give ours £20 but we have a long steep drive and our postie goes the extra mile to make sure we get things with minimum hassle.

zigaziga · 24/12/2020 12:52

Never heard of anyone doing that other than on MN.

How would you give it to them? Leave it tacked to the door?

LittleMissLockdown · 24/12/2020 12:53

I dont. I appreciate the job he does but at the end of the day it's his job.

Although I'm not best pleased with the Royal Mail at present as due to the massive shortages of staff we've only seen him deliver to our street twice in the last 2 weeks.

ImFree2doasiwant · 24/12/2020 12:54

My mum does card and box of chocs/biscuits for postman, binman, milkman , butcher

BlueRabbitWasNaughty · 24/12/2020 12:56

I caught my postie yesterday as I was home and gave him a £10 note... I hope it's not patronising as he's great and seemed to appreciate it.

It doesn't feel very much but if a few houses did the same, it would soon add up.

Allmyfavouritepeople · 24/12/2020 12:57

Not tipped the postie but I dont know who they are. Different person all the time.
Tipped the milkman and greengrocer a fiver each. Hope it's not an insult!

RandomUsernameHere · 24/12/2020 12:58

I don't give cash but give him a voucher or gift to the value of £10. We have about 5 different postmen that come here but I only give to the main one.

Can't get him biscuits as we are isolating. And if everyone bought him biscuits he'd (a) have too many biscuits (b) wouldn't get them all in his trolley.

£10 in a card. Not sure why cash is more patronising than chocolate or biscuits, he might not like sweet things. He’s worth his weight in gold.

GroundAlmonds · 24/12/2020 13:09

That’s a fair point. We tend to do all the presents for postie/window cleaner/cleaner/dog groomer/milkman earlier in the month as they call or I catch them. So I don’t worry so much about size except for the window cleaner who comes on his bike contraption.

ExpensivelyDecorated · 24/12/2020 13:15

We do a tenner in a card for the postie, milkman and veg box driver. It seems a better option than boxes of chocolates etc that they might not like and in the case of the postie will have to carry on an already fully laden trolley till the end of their round.

NailsNeedDoing · 24/12/2020 13:17

Nothing, ours insists on folding every letter in half to shove it through the letterbox so everything ends up crumpled. Tips are for people who do more than is expected of them, not people who are shot at their job.

dazzlinghaze · 24/12/2020 13:19

I've never heard of anyone doing this! Feeling a bit guilty now Shock

Wtfdidwedo · 24/12/2020 13:20

I didn't realise this was a thing, I'm fairly certain I've received about 10 letters in the past year through Royal Mail.

Mmr224 · 24/12/2020 13:22

Card and home made shortbread this year, we've had the same postie for years and we get lots of parcels

wowfudge · 24/12/2020 13:24

Not his fault though, is it?
TottiePlantagenet · 24/12/2020 13:27

£20 in a card this year.

In past years we've given £10 or chocolates- depends how last minute we have been.

ShouldHaveCouldHaveWouldHave · 24/12/2020 13:27

I’ve just given our postman £10 in an envelope when he dropped a parcel off.
I’ve never tipped one before as they’ve changed often but this one has been with us for the whole year now and he’s amazing.
Hides parcels in our agreed place so I don’t have to sort out redelivery or brings them to my work for me.

Fredelliottisayfredelliott · 24/12/2020 13:27

This is not a thing where I come from, why would you tip the postman for doing his job? Where do you draw the line ? Confused

TheQueef · 24/12/2020 13:28

I do £20 in a card to me & mrs postie they both work my round and try to give a cup of hot chocolate if I can.
Yes they get paid but I appreciate the personal service they do and I want to chip in to their holiday.

TheQueef · 24/12/2020 13:29

I also tip the coal man and the chemist delivery driver.

FourDecades · 24/12/2020 13:29

I never tip... just like l don't get tips for doing my job

TheQueef · 24/12/2020 13:33

I don't get tips in my job but I have been a barmaid, waitress, taxi despatcher and courier at different times over the years and appreciate how welcome tips can be.
