How much do you tip your postman

Just realised we've got no cash and are isolating so can't go out

There's a fiver in DSs money box but is that an insult rather than a tip ?!

OP posts:
MsSquiz · 24/12/2020 16:21

We gave ours £20.

Yes he's just doing his job, but we've had a lot of deliveries this year, and he's been brilliant! Even to the point when he wouldn't knock if the lounge blinds were down because he knew that meant baby DD was napping, so he'd put things in our shed straight away. He's really sweet, often chats and always has a smile

HerRoyalNotness · 24/12/2020 16:22

We don’t but where we are they’re not allowed anything over US$5 value otherwise they have to declare it. Still would be a tidy sum all the houses they do. (Actually not sure if that’s total, or each individual gift) on the other hand how would the govt know if it’s all in cash.

Lindy2 · 24/12/2020 16:29

Our postmen and women have been absolutely great this year. Staying cheerful and reliable all through even the most rubbish times.

I left out a tin of nice shortbread today. I know they probably get too many sweets and biscuits but there was a smile on the post man's face as he picked it up (I had a look on the RING doorbell) so I think it was appreciated.

@HiveQueen

My husband is a postal worker and is overwhelmed by the number of gifts he has received this year. He is very appreciative as am I as I’ll get to share the wine and chocolates he has received. He’s had a smile on his face the past couple of weeks feeling the love from the residents on his round.
Hopefully your husband will enjoy a few days off. I'm just curious are there any rules on declaring gifts? Some of the posties must get quite a substantial amount if the norm is to gift £10 - 20.
MadMumToThree · 24/12/2020 16:54

We don't appear to have a regular postman anymore. We certainly don't tip because they frequently mix up our Avenue with Road of the same name!

We've also had post for random local roads just because we are the same number Hmm

AuntieMarys · 24/12/2020 16:55

A tenner.

Atrixie · 24/12/2020 17:06

Nothing. It’s his job

Frankley · 24/12/2020 17:14

£10. A very helpful, cheerful, hardworking postman. Takes letters from us to save us the bother of going to postbox.

goteam · 24/12/2020 17:24

£10 usually but this year only had a £20 note so it was £20. £20 for the bin men too but there are usually 3 of them so not sure how they split tips.

tinselvestsparklepants · 24/12/2020 17:26

Bottle of beer for the postie and the milkman.

Ginfordinner · 24/12/2020 17:28

We've had no post for a couple of weeks as our local sorting office has been badly affected by covid, so I haven't even seen a postman to tip.

BackforGood · 24/12/2020 18:16

I dont. I appreciate the job he does but at the end of the day it's his job.

This ^
Same with everyone else doing their job.
People I get gifts for are people who do things voluntarily - Scout and Guide Leaders, Football Coaches, etc etc. Those people who enrich our live, or our dc's lives as well as doing their jobs, "just because".

pippapoo62 · 24/12/2020 18:54

Postman £20.00 ( never folds our Mail )Window Cleaner £10.00 and the hairdresser £6.00

Littlemissnutcracker · 24/12/2020 18:56

Tenner in a card. Ours is very good.

Jumpalicious · 24/12/2020 18:59

Here in London, I have absolutely NO IDEA who my postman is, let alone my bin men!

Maybe if you live in a village/town with the exact same postie and bin men this makes sense?

N4ish · 24/12/2020 19:02

I’m in London and gave our postman £10 in a card. So not just a village thing! He’s our regular postman and has been on the same round for years.

Jumpalicious · 24/12/2020 19:10

@N4ish ok - so it’s your regular postman. Are you in a suburb or a very quiet bit of London? Genuinely intrigues since we have various people, I sometimes see the same face, but there are lots of different people who do the same round - know this since there’s one woman (who stands out to me because she’s a woman!) and I see her once or twice a year... can’t think of the last time I opened the door to her though.

motorcyclenumptiness · 24/12/2020 19:21

Tenner in a card, same for the binmen, same for the delivery driver who's delivered pretty much all my Christmas shopping

N4ish · 24/12/2020 19:59

@Jumpalicious We’re Zone 2 so not very quiet really. Think we might just be lucky with our postman, our binmen definitely aren’t the same every week.

SpineyCrevice · 24/12/2020 20:01

A four pack of guinness. He gets this in the summer too. He texts me when he's got a parcel for us. I luffs him a bit to be honest. : )

Stormy373 · 24/12/2020 20:04

DH is a postman. He is definitely not offended by a fiver. He's had £600 in tips so far this Christmas and usually gets another hundred between Christmas and the New year. He's done the same rural round for 7 years and many of his customers he now considers friends. We've had lots of cards to our family with some lovely messages written inside.

GalesThisMorning · 24/12/2020 20:16

Oops. I tipped a fiver Blush he's fab. He's been working so hard during the pandemic and honestly he's the best postman and comes to our house almost daily! I though £5 was okay... if 10 people do the same that's a nice Christmas. If not it's a bottle of wine isn't it... oops, hope he doesn't think we're mean!

GemmeFatale · 24/12/2020 20:17

In the U.K. you can use a Royal Mail feedback form to tell them how fabulous your postie is (if they are fab).

My old postie is the only thing I miss from our old address

GalesThisMorning · 24/12/2020 20:18

Oh I missed your comment @Stormy373. Phew! Postmen and women are heroes this year. Hope your DH has a nice break

marriednotdead · 24/12/2020 20:22

My DP is a postman. He's worked his socks off this year and hasn't taken a day off in the last 2 weeks in case whoever covers him messes up. Your mail may not reach you until mid afternoon sometimes but he's up and out of here at 5am, walking miles whatever the weather.

He's been on the same round (walk) for a few years and is well known and loved by his customers, he always makes time to talk to them. He attended the funeral of one at the request of her daughter, sitting at the back for half an hour mid way through his round.

He wears Christmas jumpers for the run up every year which cheers everyone up and was in full elf mode today Grin
They've always been generous but he has come home with a massive stack of chocolate and biscuits this year as well as wine and cards.

I tip our postman now!
