Nursing student shoes?

Hi,

I'm about to start my first placement after Christmas based at a hospital, but not on wards. I'll be at a day clinic for people with dementia

Any recommendations for a decent pair of shoes? Im also 6 weeks pregnant with a baaad back, and very prone to growing humongous babies; so they'll need to be comfy haha.

So excited to start!

Clarke's Funny Dreams lace ups. Like walking on clouds, but they're not pretty! Good luck with your placement Smile

Clark's - dd has brogues for her military job and is on her feet most the day

TheFairyCaravan · 24/12/2020 10:10

Clarks Unloop

DDIL is a nurse. She wears these, as do lots of other nurses. She bought them when she was a student and they did her 2 years after too.

The ugliest shoes on earth - but sooooo comfy!
Tehmina23 · 24/12/2020 11:16

I've just bought Skechers black trainers in faux black leather with memory foam insoles.
Omg so comfy for my care assistant job.

I like Skechers. If you try Oxypas then go up a size and don't wear thick socks. I've also tried Born and again they're pretty snug.

JoanneCofton · 24/12/2020 13:07

Definitely the Clark’s loop ones. I’m a this year nursing student and they’ve done me since the first placement. They’re so comfy and you’ll see SO many nurses wearing them

JoanneCofton · 24/12/2020 13:07

Third year*

bruffin · 24/12/2020 13:12

DD is studying OT and says her sketchers work are really comfy. There is a discount for nhs staff as well

Coldhandscoldheart · 24/12/2020 13:19

I found the Clark’s loop ones made me really unstable somehow, too narrow at the bottom if the sole.
There were a pair of DMs they don’t make any more
Am considering Skechers for my next, mostly I look for wipeable & won’t let fluid thru.

PeachScone · 24/12/2020 13:37

I'm final year and have tried most of the shoes suggested - but the only ones that don't make my feet ache are doc martens! I have the lace up shoe ones. Also wipe clean and needle proof!

abersinas · 24/12/2020 13:38

Birkenstock shoes

badlydrawnbear · 24/12/2020 13:45

When I started my nursing degree 20 years ago my mum took me shoe shopping and told me to choose the comfiest pair we found. I got the lace-up dr martens shoes. They are expensive but last a very long time. My colleagues who wear cheaper shoes once concluded mine were better value for money because they had to buy new shoes at least once a year.

Crappyfridays7 · 24/12/2020 13:59

I had Clarke’s for years so comfy then they stopped making the ones I wore and I didn’t want to pay ££ so I wear trainers rubbish really. You don’t want to pay out a lot for them to be unsuitable and check your uni uniform policy as some are quite strict others they just have to be black etc.
Good luck on placement

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/12/2020 14:01

Hotter, you need a Velcro or lace up never wear slip ons or clog styles.

I’m a podiatrist. They are so bloody comfy I want to wear them all the time but they are rather frumpy.

Last thing you need is sore feet. Don’t forget to ask the tax office about the tax rebate for uniforms & nurses get an allowance for shoes and tights too iirc.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 24/12/2020 14:08

I wear Sketchers black slip ons with memory foam, it's like wearing slippers. They only last me about 9-12 months then I need another pair. So I watch for sales and get the next pair ahead of time.

rookgizzardpie · 24/12/2020 14:17

I wear Hotter lace up style. They’re so ugly but the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn

Crapbuttrue · 24/12/2020 14:18

I love Clark's Funny Dreams. I like how they look 😳

WhatKatyDidNxt · 24/12/2020 14:21

I went for Clark’s myself. Other people wear by Sketchers or Kickers

lunar1 · 24/12/2020 14:27

Something you can stick in the wash, black sketchers are perfect.

Retiremental · 24/12/2020 14:30

Sketchers are easily wipeable and tolerate dettol wipes.

knackersknockersknickers · 24/12/2020 14:38

Ha I'm a therapist (we're allowed to wear black trainers) and I always wondered why so many nurses had those fugly loop shoes - weird cos they don't look comfy somehow!

knackersknockersknickers · 24/12/2020 14:40

My only advice would be get something water repellant - if she does a community placement there's nowt worse than being stuck outside a house in driving rain in unsubstantial footwear.
