Tonight. Thanks.⭐

topcat2014 · 23/12/2020 06:56

I always think of julie Walters playing adrian moles mum.

Trying to defrost the Turkey with a hairdryer.

"the bloody thing won't thaw out adrian"

drinkingwineoutofamug · 23/12/2020 07:04

Omg @topcat2014 😂 that springs to mind every year😂
Sitting down to eat at 7pm with Burt Baxter moaning 😂

Reminds me of the Royle Family

I didn't remember Julie Walters playing Adrian's mum! Quick google suggests Lulu took over after series one which is possibly why...

EdithWeston · 23/12/2020 07:13

Bump!!

I was thinking of starting a thread like this, as I mentioned defrosting on another thread the other day.

Yes, I know it'll seem like stating the obvious, but there are usually a couple of 'HELP!!!' threads every year and it would be nice to avert them

Pearsapiece · 23/12/2020 07:14

First time thawing a turkey, when do I need to get it out?

RoseAndRose · 23/12/2020 07:29

How big?

Allow 10-12 hours per kilo for fridge defrosting

RancidOldHag · 23/12/2020 08:01

Good reminder, OP!

FleeceNavidadToEwe · 23/12/2020 08:08

You're welcome Xmas Smile

If it’s going to be in fridge after defrosting anyway would it be ok just to defrost slightly earlier? It’s not going to spoil over 12 hours of it being thawed?!?!

Spudlet · 23/12/2020 08:11

Mine is a chicken, but it also needs ages - thanks op!

RoseAndRose · 23/12/2020 08:14

It'll keep defrosted in a fridge for up to 48 hours before cooking.

If the fridge is full, then unheated garage or shed, but for heavens sake make sure it's vermin proof (and as it's probably a bit warmer than a fridge, I wouldn't leave it so long there before cooking)

NHS advice on defrosting

I haven't unwrapped mine Blush Off to do that now.

Every year I treat raw turkey like it contains radioactive elements! I don't touch it with my bare hands, spray down every surface after it's been anywhere remotely near it and put any utensils that have been in contact with it into boiling water. It's a running joke in my family - yet I have managed not to poison anyone in over 30 years of Christmas dinners.

This year for the first time I have bought a frozen turkey as I could not be bothered with going into the supermarket close to Christmas to search for a smaller sized turkey. So, on top of my usual raw turkey paranoia I have to stress about safely defrosting the damn thing, Thanks for the NHS link - very helpful - though having to have NHS advice on dealing with a turkey makes me even more suspicious. I don't even especially like turkey - if I had my way we would eat a lovely joint of beef ar have a leg of lamb.

Pearsapiece · 23/12/2020 09:58

So its a 'large crown'. Advice on the back says 24-28hours defrosting. So if I start the process tonight, put it in the fridge, it should be ready for Xmas day?! Gives it some wiggle room too if it doesn't defrost in the time given

Spudlet · 23/12/2020 11:20

Our chicken said to defrost for at least 48 hours in the fridge, so it’s unwrapped and sitting in a dish on the bottom shelf. Last time I tried to defrost a chicken in the fridge I didn’t give it anywhere near enough time and it was a bit of a disaster, so hoping for better results this time!

winechateauxjoy · 23/12/2020 12:42

I broke and just took mine out of the freezer. It weighs under 3kg so should have waited till about 6pm, but I'm sure 6 extra hours in the fridge will not hurt it - and better that than a half frozen turkey on Friday morning.

drinkingwineoutofamug · 23/12/2020 13:45

Need to defrost as cooling tomorrow. I'm working Xmas day (nhs) and not trusting partner to sort

DelphineWalsh · 23/12/2020 13:51

Just got the lamb out ready for tomorrow evening.

Thanks OP

Bumping for anyone that needs this Xmas Smile

Shinylikeglass · 23/12/2020 16:39

I don't think I've ever successfully defrosted anything in the fridge, it's never defrosted in the recommended time and I certainly don't own a fridge big enough for a turkey

Spudlet · 23/12/2020 17:28

The chicken has been in the fridge since 8am-ish and still feels completely rock solid. Is this normal?!

Spudlet · 23/12/2020 17:29

Actually tell a lie, it was a lot later in the morning than that. It’s been that sort of a day. Still a bit worried that it doesn’t seem to have thawed at all though 😬
