What did Santa put your presents in as a child?

I don't remember there being special Santa stockings when I was young (I'm 39)

I used to leave out a pair of my mum's tights!

My cousins would use a pillowcase.

I’m 28, I just had a plain white pillowcase (it was just a standard one we used all year as a spare)

Pair of tights here, amazing and could fit lots in them! Think my parents regretted giving us two legs 🤣 am carrying on that tradition with my children

When I was a child, Santa's present wasn't wrapped - I think they had a ribbon or bow with a tag on it placed next to the tree. The rest of our presents were wrapped and were put under the tree over the course of December, but there would always be a few my parents still had to wrap on Christmas Eve (they weren't entirely quiet or sober about that part so we were well aware of that pretty young).

I vaguely recall stockings, but I don't remember anything about who put things in them. They were phased out when I was young, so I guess they got tired of doing them or just didn't bother after a particular move, much like they stopped bothering with a tree after a move when I was 13 (which was odd as my mother was obsessed with a perfect Christmas before then).

My maternal grandparents did gifts in a pillowcase when I was tiny, the pillowcase was one of our presents - I think I still have one of them somewhere, a very '80s rainbow heart covered one. I'm not sure why they stopped, though they were very particular that certain things were for certain ages.

My kids each have one of these bags that we always put presents in for birthdays, Children's Day, and New Year's (except one time with a present that was too big and we did what my in-laws did to my spouse and cover it with a blanket and then asked the child to get us the blanket. Unlike my spouse, our child actually figured out that it was his present...).

Mid 40s and it was a pillowcase in our house.

I had a huge red pillowcase, then my older sister made me a stocking when I was about 8, that I still have and use. I'm 39 now!

Just remembered, I did have a stocking before that. A proper red one with fur at the top and my name in glitter on it. My mum must have made it, but don't think it lasted long for some reason. Odd as my mum is a good seamstress.

A black bin bag, never had a stocking, never had anything wrapped either even the main present.

I had a red felt stocking that was left on my bed to be filled and put back there. The weight on my feet when I woke up and wriggled about sums up Christmas for me.
My dc have sacks (can’t fit bugger all in a stocking!) and they are left on their beds. Older 2 are now 15 and 16 and they still love waking up to a sack full of presents at the end of their beds even though they know who fills them and the little buggers stay up so late now! I exhaust myself waiting up later than them to sneak in. Don’t know why I bother with it for them anymore, should just leave them outside their doors now but I can’t bring myself to Grin

@TheChosenTwo I also loved the feel of a full stocking at the end of my bed, plus the crinkly sound as you wriggled your toes! It's that last moment of excitement and anticipation before it all gets opened.

One of my Dad's grey knee socks, it was surprisingly stretchy ha! Same one every year, the memory of it is so vivid. Children's little brains are really firing on all cylinders on Christmas morning, I remember the texture and the shade of the colour and the way it stretched around the satsumas 😂 Think they were stashed in the attic and not worn after had been assigned as my stocking.

Pillow case and I’m mid forties. Would have selection box, favourite sweets, satsuma and nuts (which never got eaten), books, art stuff and novelties. Main presents under the tree labelled from family.

We always had a stocking and it was my favourite part. Then test of presents are mixed up under the tree.

A pillow case until I was about 7 and then it got upgraded to a single duvet cover Wink

We had a stocking, I'm 34.

But I'm thinking of getting a white pillow case and the putting DSs handprint on it in paint every Christmas eve morning, and then it will be dry by evening in time to leave out for Santa. I can put his name on it but it's like it will grow with him over the years. He's 4 so I've probably left it too late but the thought only occurred to me recently.

I had a stocking. I remember a very early one (I am 46 now - so 40 ish years ago of longer) being made of a thing netting (a bit like net curtain) with red crape paper edging. It was so cheap and tacky by today’s standards, but it was glorious and gives me a warm fuzzy feeling to remember it! Thank you Smile

Moved into a knitted style stocking around the age of maybe 10? Think that they were becoming more common then.

Stocking had to be the best part of Christmas back then.... just wrapped the presents for DS’s sack tonight 💗

I'm 40 and always had a stocking. The first one was bought by my cousin's then boyfriend for my first Christmas in 1980 and then in the late 80s it was replaced by a Russ one with a teddy bear sort of peeking over the top, which I still have and still hang up every year.

My stocking was hung on the fireplace in the living room and filled with little bits and pieces and my "main" presents were also left in the living room, beside the stocking rather than under the tree. But Santa also left a surprise at my bed, so when I woke up I knew he'd been. My daughter also likes a surprise at her bed.

Used to leave them on the sofa as no room under the tree, we do the same now 😊

Surprised that more people didn’t have their dads kilt socks for there stockings. Being knitted they stretched well and were left outside the door. I used to love feeling up the outside trying to work out what was in it before opening them all. Then had to wait what felt like an age before we could open tree presents.

Equimum · 20/12/2020 22:49

I had one of my dad’s socks.

Main presents were from the giver and we all had our own pile in the lounge.
