Strange Surnames

Backtoblack1 · 19/12/2020 23:20

Used to work in customer services. Three surnames have never left my brain:
Mrs Wildgoose
Mr Gotobed
Mr and Mrs D’eath.

Please share the weird and wonderful surnames you own or have heard. Apologies if your surname is one I’ve listed.

@LaTomatina

Once met a German girl called Fanny Likker.

A friend who is a primary teacher has taught a little girl called Robyn Hood... And another called Versace MacLachie.

Versace McLatchie is an urban myth, along with her twin sister Armani.

See also La-a, and Pocahontas McGinty.

It's always a friend who taught them, or treated them in hospital, or heard the name being called out in the supermarket.

@SoupDragon the good thing about living in U.K. is that it is very, very easy to change your surname by deed poll. So no-one need go through life being called Arsebiscuit or Cuntbucket. If you keep a ridiculous surname, there is an element of choice in it.

Goatsdorhone · 21/12/2020 17:56

My maiden name has cropped up a few times on this thread - it never bothered me if someone laughed at it, I probably would too!
Though I am now wondering if people on here have met members of my family as it is quite a rare name and quite geographically limited!
I think my favourite name discovery was a Jayant Bhatt Grin

Backtoblack1 · 21/12/2020 18:33

@SoupDragon I would tell you to bore off but instead I’ll wish you a merry Christmas. I personally think it’s fabulous when the name matches the job (that’s typically how some British surnames came about). And as @MrsSchadenfreude stated, if a surname bothers you that much you can change it.

If I’ve offended anyone (including you soupdragon) then I apologise.

Thanks for all your contributions. This has been an interesting thread for me. Thank you x

I might start another one on names which are pronounced NOTHING like how they are spelled x the geek in me likes things like that 🤓

My maiden name has cropped up a few times, I laugh at it as well so can't see why @SoupDragon is all offended on my behalf, I love these threads. My ex's cousins were the Onion family, some of them went by O'Nion.

Hepzibar · 21/12/2020 20:51

De'Ath is a local name to us, so are 'bottoms' Longbottom, Sidebottom, Ramsbottom, Shufflebottom.

I worked in a bank years ago and we had a customer called Wayne Anker, he was a reporter on the local paper, maybe that's why he didn't change it?

TinkersRucksack · 21/12/2020 20:59

@Handsnotwands

Our headmaster was mr trebelcock

He said it trebeeeelco

Of course none of us did 😂

You're not Welsh by any chance are you?
IToldYouIWantedTheUnicorn · 21/12/2020 21:10

A family on our estate have the surname 'Eggington'. The mum thinks she's brilliant and totally is up herself, yet she's got such a shit surname.

There is also a family in our village with the surname 'Barsted'

BikeRunSki · 21/12/2020 21:11

@Hepzibar, I wonder that about Mr Anker every time I see the local paper or it’s website. I’m guessing you must live not far from me.

Santaisironingwrappingpaper · 21/12/2020 21:14

I went to school with Stephen Eggington!! He had the most amazing black curly hair!!

bobisbored · 21/12/2020 21:15

My SS had a teacher called Mr Mycock. He reckoned his first name was Isaac but I'm sure that's not true. I hope. 😂

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 22/12/2020 14:20

Our headmaster was mr trebelcock

If he happened to be from the south east and had an Estuary accent, was his favourite film Free Willy?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 22/12/2020 14:21

Don't be ridiculous - it was Paul.... Grin

WarmSausageTea · 22/12/2020 14:28

@Backtoblack1 I don’t know if it’s always the case, but De’ath can be a shortening of a Portuguese name, d’Azevedo - the z has a soft th sound. Azevedo is a very common name in Portugal and Brazil.

BikeRunSki · 23/12/2020 02:00

There is a person by the surname “Fullalove” in our work internal contacts directory.

Dotinthecity · 23/12/2020 06:04

My primary school.music teacher was Mrs Wailes.😊

willsantausesantatize · 23/12/2020 07:13

I knew a Thickpenny.

One of my relatives was taught my an Onion who pronounced it O’Nion.

Ones I’ve come across are
Wildgoose
Goodenough
Dicks
Mankee
Seagrave
Versaci (not really an odd name, more that a lot of people don’t believe it’s her real surname because of the brand)

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 23/12/2020 07:46

Army Dentist... Major Payne. Introduced to the kids by his first name instead.

The Army rank of Major makes many names amusing.

CrazyFoxLady · 23/12/2020 07:55

I genuinely know someone called Mike Hunt. What on earth were his parental thinking? Perhaps the 'c' word hadn't been invented in the sixties Grin

CrazyFoxLady · 23/12/2020 07:56

*Parents Hmm

plannit · 23/12/2020 08:09

Mrs Goodenough
Mr Goodwillie

Once knew a chap called Willie Cummings!

Westfacing · 23/12/2020 08:29

I worked with a Harry Pine-Coffin, and have met a Mrs Rainbow

whattodo2019 · 09/01/2021 22:02

WitchQueenofDarkness · 09/01/2021 22:57
