Strange Surnames

Used to work in customer services. Three surnames have never left my brain:
Mrs Wildgoose
Mr Gotobed
Mr and Mrs D’eath.

Please share the weird and wonderful surnames you own or have heard. Apologies if your surname is one I’ve listed.

I know of two pilots with distinctive surnames. There was once a Captain Fear, who wore a big 'F' cape over his uniform. And in the USA, a chap named Starbuck. First name, Randy.

ArosAdraDrosDolig · 20/12/2020 09:55

I did once meet a Sandy Bush.

Anybody who doubts that estate agents do very much to earn their commission will probably want to avoid using Doolittle & Dalley in Kidderminster.

I once knew a man with the surname Brothwell. He always pronounced it exactly as it's spelled, but if you're used to the names of places like Norwich or Harwich, it comes quite naturally to make the 'w' silent!

Topliss is a far from uncommon surname. That must elicit a lot of sniggers and could be very unfortunate in certain scenarios.

"Did you see Jenny Topliss in the college-leavers' yearbook? She's right there on page 3...." Grin

There's a woman on telly this very moment who has the title Very Reverend and her surname is Ogle!

I worked in tele sales at uni and spoke to a Mr Spicey - loved that name.

Cam2020 · 20/12/2020 11:35

I knew someone with theast name Raper. As it that wasn't bad enough, their first initial was C - which looks like crapper of you put them together.

Not quite the same, but the German first name Helmut always makes me giggle.

Jusu48 · 20/12/2020 11:38

I was once out with my father when he pointed out a small balding unremarkable man in a beige raincoat, and told me the mans name was Wesley Challenger. I couldn’t help thinking he’d duck into a phone box and come out as a superhero 🦸‍♂️

The black drummer in Showaddywaddy (this band had two of every musician, hence my distinction) is called Romeo Challenger.

Friend with name Bott. His brother changed it to Abbott, which I thought a good idea. Friend refused to change his.
Another friend had surname of Spittle. He changed it when he got married, his wife insisted!

Backtoblack1 · 20/12/2020 22:11

I love the quirky Britishness of these names! Not so often found in Wales where I’m from as we have lots of surnames such as Jones, Parry, Evans, etc. I’m a teacher and one of my favourite pupil surnames is Moriarty. But I do love Sherlock 😊
