A field nearby has lots of cauliflowers on them ready to be harvested

The other day, we spotted lots of sheep on the field

Thought that the caulis were ruined due to the weather, or the sheep had escaped.

However, we managed to speak to the farmer and no!

The sheep eat the greens around the cauliflower, but leave the actual flower alone.

What was once a green field, now actually has lots of white where the exposed cauliflower are.

I was amazed really

@Eckhart

I read a news article once where sheep were getting into the gardens in a village, despite cattle grids. Locals set up cameras to see how they were getting in during the night. They had 2 methods: 1) roll 2) One sheep lies down on the cattle grid, and everybody else runs over the top of it.

They are NOT stupid. NEVER trust a sheep.

For some reason, the thought of this has absolutely made my day Grin
giantangryrooster · 18/12/2020 18:46

Aww, woolbur is adorable, if I every get sheep I want some woolburs too Xmas Smile.

Saz12 · 18/12/2020 18:56

I had my arm broken by a sheep once. I wasn’t a child, nor do I have osteoporosis or any other bone issues. It hurt.

BackforGood · 18/12/2020 18:58

BEST thread since the little old Korean lady

Thank you for all these hitherto unknown sheep related facts.
Made my day / week /year Smile

Can this be a MN Classic @MNHQ ?

Sidge · 18/12/2020 19:08

I love this thread.

Especially the Sheep-Bridge.

Sidge · 18/12/2020 19:09

Didn’t they discover that quite a lot of animals roll over cattle grids?

I used to live in the New Forest and I think they put cameras up to see ponies and donkeys doing a rolley-shimmy over cattle grids.

Threelionsandalioness · 18/12/2020 19:13

See? They're just a bit twisted, and sometimes, it shows. Honestly, nobody wants to get on the wrong side of a sheep. Goats are honest enough, but sheep are underhanded.

Ovine cat goddess disapproves of this thread.

A sheep cat! I knew you could have sheep dogs, but this is new. As is the word 'ovine'.

TheClitterati · 18/12/2020 23:49

So are you telling me the caulis have sheep dribble on them? ShockGrin

NoddyMcPintsAlot · 19/12/2020 00:12

I once saw a flock of sheep build a sheep bridge over a wall in the west of Ireland. A large sheep was leaning up against the wall and smaller sheep would take a run at it jump on its back and jump over the wall. Hilarious. To the locals this was regular sheep behaviour.

IamEarthymama · 19/12/2020 00:36

Thank you so much for this thread, properly cheered me up.

When I picked my grandson up from school last week he was thrilled to tell me that they had seen a sheep trotting down the road.

When I was little, in a village at the top of this valley in South Wales, sheep wandering the streets were a common occurrence. They gave you a nasty side eye if you tried to shoo them away. Now there are fines for straying beasts it's highly unusual and I am glad he loved it as much as I did.

We have often watched the Shaun the Sheep documentary, a valuable insight into the lives of our Wooly friends. Apparently this sheep was very near the hairdressers, I am not surprised! 🐏🐑🦙🐩

I lived in rural Wales for a number of years and agree that sheep are smarter than you think!

You need to watch The Baa Studs extreme shepherding on You Tube. It has the sheep with led lights stuff a pp referred to.

One of the Theakston family, went off to start his own brewery. He called it Black Sheep. One of their bestsellers is a beer called Riggwelter.

One of my favourite artists does work involving stylised sheep. He’s called Mackenzie Thorpe. He’s designed labels for the brewery in the past.

sashh · 19/12/2020 05:45

Dd had lessons in how to sit a sheep up against you, it was mayhem.

Has no one else read this message?

Why? How? and why again?

Was this in school? A birthday party?

squashyhat · 19/12/2020 09:04

She's a vet student. Maybe useful, maybe not, but a good convo starter at parties Grin

sashh · 19/12/2020 09:21

@squashyhat

LOL I was imagining primary school children in summer dresses.

I've known a couple of people who had sheep as pets when they were children.
