I learned something fascinating

A field nearby has lots of cauliflowers on them ready to be harvested

The other day, we spotted lots of sheep on the field

Thought that the caulis were ruined due to the weather, or the sheep had escaped.

However, we managed to speak to the farmer and no!

The sheep eat the greens around the cauliflower, but leave the actual flower alone.

What was once a green field, now actually has lots of white where the exposed cauliflower are.

I was amazed really

Mini sheep - believe they're commonly known as 'lambs' Grin

CatVsChristmasTree · 18/12/2020 12:26

So, you're saying my cauliflowers have sheep spit on them?

Eckhart · 18/12/2020 12:26

Yes, but what are mini-lambs called? CAULIFLOWERS.
CatVsChristmasTree · 18/12/2020 12:30

@Eckhart

I read a news article once where sheep were getting into the gardens in a village, despite cattle grids. Locals set up cameras to see how they were getting in during the night. They had 2 methods: 1) roll 2) One sheep lies down on the cattle grid, and everybody else runs over the top of it.

They are NOT stupid. NEVER trust a sheep.

Seriously impressed by this and wondering whether the footage is available on the Internet? I need to see rh8.
CatVsChristmasTree · 18/12/2020 12:31

This. Not rh8, what on earth is wrong with my phone!

DH and I were in Cornwall years ago down a very narrow lane. A large sheep was trotting in front of us and we had no option of passing it so we went at its pace.
We then got to a cattle grid. We said 'well the sheep's fucked' and then it literally skipped over the grid. It then turned to us as we sat there opened mouthed and went

Baaaaaaaaaaa!

Cattle grids +sheep = waste of time

Has anyone come across the belching sheep on Dartmoor? He follows you down country lanes letting out Barney from The Simpson-style belches. I've seen him twice but collapsed in hysterics both times and never got a video.

MrsMoastyToasty · 18/12/2020 12:39

One of the byproducts of whiskey distilling is the spent grain. It can be fed to cows.

DontWalkPastTheCastle · 18/12/2020 12:47

Wasn't there someone who posted on here a few years ago who swore blind she was walking across her farm one morning when she saw a sheep stood up on two legs like a human who said 'good morning'

When she turned back all was normal. She was really creeped out if I remember rightly.

Soubriquet · 18/12/2020 12:49

Not quite cattle grid, or sheep, but I’ll never forget the time I walked my dog over a drain. You know the metal type with grids in it you find on the road...

He obviously had never encountered one before (he was a rescue) and cockily walked across it, only to fall in the gaps.

There he was laid on the drain with all 4 legs through the gaps looking very confused.

He avoided them after that Grin

So basically, sheep are going to take over the world and are just waiting for the right time?

So the caulis in the shops have been slobbered on by sheep? Grin

Bellieberg · 18/12/2020 12:53

This is the best thread ever!!!

Gazelda · 18/12/2020 12:55

Agreed. Absolutely perfect. I'm so tempted to ask Alexa for a sheep fact I can post, but that feels like cheating and would sully the thread.

Buzzer3555 · 18/12/2020 12:57

That's my favourite post of the day

Eckhart · 18/12/2020 13:00

@Soubriquet

Your dog's legs weren't long enough, then? Or he was stupider than a sheep??

bluebellation · 18/12/2020 13:01

As caulis in shops always have their leaves on, I assume these are going to processing plants to be made into ready meals or bags of frozen cauliflower. Saves them trimming the leaves off, so it's even more efficient!

Soubriquet · 18/12/2020 13:03

My dog was a bit dumb yes...he was a short legged Jack Russell and he wasn’t very clever at all Grin

Jacks are supposed to be quick, intelligent dogs..he was the complete opposite

ShrikeAttack · 18/12/2020 13:04

Yes @MrsMoastyToasty! DH has a small all-grain brewery and we feed the spent grain to the bullocks that live in the field that backs onto our garden (with the farmer's permission of course).

Here they are enjoying some spent mash!

I learned something fascinating

I was all set to have a break from MN due to the number of doom and gloom Covid threads. This has restored my faith and made me smile.

Love the idea of sheep walking over another one to get over a cattle grid. Grin

squashyhat · 18/12/2020 13:04

Here you are. No skipping or rolling involved - just very careful hoof placement Grin

squashyhat · 18/12/2020 13:05

Aargh @Eckhart got there before me!

No leaves on here, perhaps we get the nice slubbered ones.

When you buy a cauli in the shop it doesn't have all its leaves on though, just the smaller inside ones.

The ones round the outside are massive.
