Hard to believe it’s been 20 years already, I always found it sad that she died at Christmas time and that her most famous song was a Christmas song.

She was very talented. Very sad. Only seems like it was yesterday when I was driving home from work and heard her death being announced on the radio.

I used to love Kirsty.
A New England is a fab song and she was so funny and talented. Lovely voice.

Clymene · 18/12/2020 09:39

She was brilliant, so tragic

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 18/12/2020 09:47

We were talking about her yesterday. Such an appalling death, I always think about her sons who not only have the trauma of witnessing it, but the injustice and obvious corruption around the trial.

It is a fab song and I love her version, but did you know it's a Billy Bragg song?
RudolphReindeersFrostyBaubles · 18/12/2020 09:49

I was in Sydney at the time. My mum, as my personal Celebrity Death hotline, rang me up to tell me.

Kirsty was great. What a horrible and shocking way to go. ☹️

(I was somewhere down the west coast when I was informed about Paula Yates.)

RudolphReindeersFrostyBaubles · 18/12/2020 09:51

Her original “They don’t know” was cracking, and it was still her “baby” on the Tracy Ullman version.

I know, bless them. Must be awful having such a horrific memory like that.

And yes, the fact that the person responsible didn’t get true justice is appalling

20 years! Shock

Feels like it was about 6 or 7 years ago! It was so very sad.

I know!!

I can’t get over the fact it’s been 20 years either - really doesn’t seem like it

I've just read up on how she died, god that's awful, should never have happened

It was truly shocking.

She should have been able to enjoy her holiday in Mexico with her kids and then go home again and enjoy Christmas with her family but that was cut short thanks to some fool who thought it was a good idea to enter an area restricted for swimmers only on a speedboat.

One of the few people (along with Freddy Mercury) that I regret not seeing in concert. It's such a pity her legacy has been reduced to that shite song with the Pogues.

TheVanguardSix · 18/12/2020 10:09

My life! 20 years? It feels like just the other day! I saw her perform at the Jazz Cafe in October '99. And that seems ages ago! She only died a year later and yet, I always think of her death as only recently happening.
What a loss. Loved her!

nevernotstruggling · 18/12/2020 10:12

I had no idea how she died until this thread nor that she was my age at the time!

The song don't come the cowboy with me sonny jim is amazing.

Such a sad and shocking story of her death. I remember being appalled for her boys who were with her.

Her dad wrote dirty old town, another brilliant pogues song

wowfudge · 18/12/2020 10:19

In These Shoes is one of my Desert Island Discs.

Topseyt · 18/12/2020 10:28

I remember very clearly when the news came through of that tragic accident off the coast of Cozumel, Mexico.

She died pushing one of her teenage sons out of the path of a speedboat that had strayed into an area of the sea reserved as a safe bathing area, where it never should have been.

Justice has never been served despite regular attempts by her mother to achieve it. The Pogues donated some proceeds from Fairytale of New York to help fund her campaign more than once.

She was a great artist. Fairytale of New York is a favourite Christmas song of mine. I also loved her rendition of New England.

There is still no justice for her. I get angry every time I think about it.

I have everything she ever recorded, I did before she died. I think she was an amazingly talented wordsmith and musician.

She was fab.

Yes totally agree with you regarding the justice.

Totally disgusting and horrendous that nobody was ever properly dealt with for what happened to her, it was truly avoidable and she could still be here today if it wasn’t for that tragic day.

I think the man that was meant to have killed her died about 10 or 11 years ago unfortunately, would rather he was still alive to face justice

Such a shame. The injustice of her death is shocking.

CrochetOrBust · 18/12/2020 11:13

I saw her in concert a couple of months before she died (think it may actually have been her last concert 🥲). Brilliant evening and so glad I had the chance to do that.

Can’t believe it’s been 20 years, and that she was younger than I am now.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 18/12/2020 11:14

We were talking about this a few weeks ago, DP had no idea what happened. Absolutely disgusting that the culprit got away with it.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 18/12/2020 11:20

I always think of her at this time of year because of Fairytale of New York, of course, but I had no idea it was 20 years! Tropical Brainstorm was a great album.
