Hard to believe it’s been 20 years already, I always found it sad that she died at Christmas time and that her most famous song was a Christmas song.

She was very talented. Very sad. Only seems like it was yesterday when I was driving home from work and heard her death being announced on the radio.

In these shoes? I don't think so.

I remember being in the hairdressers when the news was on a radio bulletin.

It doesn't feel like 20 years.

I remember hearing this on the news, 20 years has gone so fast. I saw her live a few times and she was awesome. Gorgeous folksy voice. A New England is perfection.

There's a guy works down the chip shop....and New England is great. Very much miss Kirsty Macoll.

@ssd her dad also wrote the First Time I Ever Saw Your Face as a rather lovely folk love song for his wife Peggy Seegar (not Kirsty's mum). Peggy's version is lovely.

So sad about Kirsty - loved her voice

Cant believe it’s 20 years, she was amazing.

nosswith · 18/12/2020 14:03

I remember being told by a work colleague.

I went to her memorial event at St Martin in the Fields church about a month or so after her death. Struck mostly at her mum speaking, no-one should have to bury or remember their child.

I was thinking about this not long ago. She saved her sons life.

user1471565182 · 18/12/2020 14:19

Also I never realised until recently she was on one version of Happy Monday's Hallelujah (possible one of the greatest songs ever) and on TOTPs with them.

Also recorded in my hometown. Its only measly claim to fame ever.

It makes me absolutely seethe that Kirsty died liked that and that the killer has evaded the courts because of his wealth. Honestly, I get angry just thinking about it. The horror of dying in front of the child you were protecting. Her mother was absolutely heroic in pursuing the bastard who is responsible but the Mexican authorities just wouldn't co-operate in any meaningful way.

nosswith · 18/12/2020 15:03

Her mum died without ever seeing justice as well.

Lunariagal · 18/12/2020 16:41

I was baking mince pies when I heard about her death.

Her music helped me in a difficult period of my life.

I saw her live in the summer of 1992 at a free concert in a park in Preston. (T in the park maybe??). Pleased to have seen her life.

Still sadly missed.

There is a memorial bench in Soho Square (near Tottenham Court Road tube station) I was unaware of. I will pay a visit there soon.

‘Thank you for the days’ always makes me cry! She was wonderful. Hadn’t recalled that she died at this time of the year.

CandyflossKid · 19/12/2020 22:42

Seriously can't believe that it was 20 years ago!

StillMedusa · 19/12/2020 23:53

Funnily enough I was playing one of her albums this week... love her music.. 'Don't come the cowboy with me' is one of my favourites. Such a sad loss.

SecretWanker · 20/12/2020 00:35

Every time I read about Kirsty Macoll’s anniversary I hear it in my head as ‘It was 21 years since I wrote this song, I’m 22 now but I won’t be for long’.

Her dad Ewan was a Salford lad, as was mine. I get nostalgic. 25 years this week since my dad passed away. 🎶Dirty old town 🎶

It’s such a lost part of my heritage. God bless Kirsty ❤️

SingingSands · 20/12/2020 00:54

Gosh, 20 years? I was only thinking of her the other day, funnily enough. DH and I spent that Christmas in our very first flat which we had just bought. We were so young.

God bless you Kirsty.

NiceGerbil · 20/12/2020 01:03

20 years? Jesus. I'd have guessed 5. Getting old.

So awful that the rich fucker got away with it.

akitamiss · 20/12/2020 11:40

She had a really wonderful English folk voice, beautiful. But she was so good the voice worked in other genres too. I loved the "Kite" album from the late 80s, with some songs with Marr (ex-Smiths)

nosswith · 20/12/2020 16:43

@StillMedusa 'Don't Come the Cowboy with me' was sung at her memorial service, by Holly Johnson if I remember correctly, towards the end of the service. Holly Johnson did the song proud. Billy Bragg sang New England, Phill Jupitus did the main eulogy. Kirsty's mum Jean spoke, as did James, Kirsty's partner. The vicar recognised that Kirsty was not religious, but noted her support for community work the church did with homeless people.

At a music festival earlier that year Kirsty had performed, and later on the day one of her sons absent mindedly ran into me and apologised. What made her death even sadder for me was the image of that young man without his mum any more.
