Collegue Clubcard discount misuse - HELP

Lulabelle1885 · 17/12/2020 04:02

Help... I let my sister use my collegue discount clubcard after I done my shop and the lady at the till said to be careful as head office mite pick up on it. Does anyone know how they would or does this only get picked up on if the store reports it? I've never done it before but she's struggling and I thought I was doing a good turn. She used her own card to pay... actually feel sick with worry now

No, HO will not pick up a random single transaction. I no longer work for the company, but after working for the office side of things, the only time I ever heard of people getting disciplined is when a manager has pulled them up on it, and even then, I can't remember the outcome but I don't think it was severe.

Was it a colleague of of yours on the till? Are they likely to tell a manager? If no, I honestly wouldn't worry. Next time, be a bit more sly about it, you buy the shopping with your sisters card, or use ghs. Or if you're really worried, don't do it at all!

I worked there for 7 years. My dad who lived 3 hours away used my second discount card in a different shop to the one my household used. It was never an issue.

Lulabelle1885 · 17/12/2020 04:17

It was because I done my shopping then she done hers. The collegue won't say anything but i was panicking that it would flag up in security in head office as both transactions were about £200.thank you for your reply

Clubcard is monitored and unfortunately it might be picked up. Not the answer you want but unfortunately it's the truth. It's monitored because you only have a certain amount of discount every year and they keep track of it. The second clubcard doesn't have to be used in the same store but the owner of the second card is supposed to live at the same address as the colleague. Fingers crossed for you that no one notices but you might want to read the colleague clubcard policy on colleague help so you know what the rules are.

For this week we can use it without using our limit but I can't believe I was so stupid 😭 I can only hope its not flagged

Not likely unless a manager is made aware.

footprintsintheslow · 17/12/2020 06:07

Next time pay for your sisters shopping and get her to pay you before or after. So your bank card and discount card match up.

I'm sure it'll be fine this time but be more careful next time. Just don't think about it now and waste energy worrying.

Parkandride · 17/12/2020 06:15

Don't work for Tesco but somewhere that does staff discount and they come down so hard on this as its gross misconduct, go and search "staff discount fired" for all kind of examples. Seriously don't risk it again. You'll probably be fine as a one off though, just hope they're not doing extra monitoring around Christmas

user1234567799 · 17/12/2020 06:36

If they question it then maybe say your sister is spending five days with you over Xmas and this was her contribution to the household food, so you thought it would be ok?

cliffdiver · 17/12/2020 06:40

Two transactions immediately after each other may raise suspicion.

Terriblecreature · 17/12/2020 06:45

Can you not say you were putting through 2 loads of shopping so you could pay on seperate accounts/cards? X

legalseagull · 17/12/2020 07:01

I very much doubt anyone will ever find out as a one off. If they did just say you were splitting the shop over two cards as it was so expensive. That's perfectly understandable with one shop right after the other.

This is a good excuse.

There have been posts about this before run a search

Honestly, I can see you were trying to do a good thing, but this is effectively stealing from your employer - they have given you a perk as an employee, and you have passed it on to someone else which was not their intention. I don’t know whether you will be picked up or not, it’s possible, but if you do you don’t have much option than to be very apologetic. If they wanted to they could probably check whether it was a one off or not (they must be able to see which payment cards are used with that clubcard). Don’t do it again, it’s really not worth the risk.

Lilac95 · 17/12/2020 07:13

You’ll be fine, my sister and mother regularly used mine when I worked in a super market. It’s only when someone grasses you up. Yes they can check bank details against transactions but tbh they won’t be monitoring in close detail. Take it as a learning curve, next time pay cash or ask her to transfer you money to pay for the goods. I suspect your colleague was warning you that there are some very spiteful people about who would tell HO.

JoanneCofton · 17/12/2020 07:21

Not to alarm you OP but my mum worked for tesco (about 10 years ago). A colleague of hers was fired for letting her sister use her staff discount. They both worked in the same store but her sister had forgotten her Clubcard/discount card so the other sister lent her hers. It was flagged up as card used to pay didn’t match the name on the discount card and the sister got fired.

Hopefully this was picked up during some audit or something but from experience (several people I know work/have worked for tesco), they are absolute bastards so who knows.

Sorry op, hope it turns out ok Flowers

Parkandride · 17/12/2020 07:24

Its not about being "grassed up" @lilac95 they're perfectly capable of seeing multiple uses of your discount card that go against normal spending patterns and that be a flag to investigate. They'll also see that the payment cards belonged to different people. The worlds largest retail companies don't sit around waiting for spiteful Bob on the tills to dob people in so don't encourage people to commit gross misconduct. Peoples jobs are worth more than saving their family members a tenner.

Lulabelle1885 · 17/12/2020 07:37

Thank you for your responses. I do normally do large shops. I won't do it again. I've not slept with worry 😭😭

@Parkandride hardly encouraging people to commit gross misconduct am I. The OP has said it was a one off, maybe Tesco are different to where I worked, but discount wasn’t closely monitored it would only be picked up on things like audits and if someone informed HO but at Christmas when people are spending more I doubt it would flag as too odd . We only had 1 instance in the 7 years I worked in a supermarket of someone being given a formal warning for abusing their discount and that’s because they gave it to every family member and it was closely monitored over 2/3 months so they had evidence.

Cissyandflora · 17/12/2020 08:14

Please do not worry. As someone above said- If you are ever asked about it then it was your shopping for your household. Your sister insisted on paying for some of it because she is staying with you over Christmas. Then please don’t worry anymore. Don’t let it cloud your Christmas. I’m someone who struggles terribly with anxiety and I know how you will be feeling. Just have a story as back up and then forget about it. Have a good Christmas!

myusernamewastakenbyme · 17/12/2020 08:20

Im sure Tesco Head Office have got better things to do than monitor peoples discount card usage.....put it out if your mind Op and relax.

Oct18mummy · 17/12/2020 08:21

If you shared your discount at my company it’s gross misconduct and I have seen people reprimanded for doing it.

Lulabelle1885 · 17/12/2020 08:21

Thank you. I just can't shift the worry and anxiety over it

You'd be surprised. I used to work at ASDA and lots of people got disciplined for it - it's against the terms of your contract and they deem it to be gross misconduct.
Hercules12 · 17/12/2020 08:25

Op - I'm sure as a one off nothing will happen but don't do it again. It is a sackable offence and people are indeed sacked for this.
