Collegue Clubcard discount misuse - HELP

Lulabelle1885 · 17/12/2020 04:02

Help... I let my sister use my collegue discount clubcard after I done my shop and the lady at the till said to be careful as head office mite pick up on it. Does anyone know how they would or does this only get picked up on if the store reports it? I've never done it before but she's struggling and I thought I was doing a good turn. She used her own card to pay... actually feel sick with worry now

As someone said it is viewed as stealing and you would expect to be sacked for that as its gross misconduct.

Respectabitch · 17/12/2020 08:27

Im sure Tesco Head Office have got better things to do than monitor peoples discount card usage.....

They won't need to monitor it manually. I would guess they use algorithms to monitor for abnormal or inconsistent patterns, just as banks do to detect fraud, money laundering and terrorism. And as PP say it's classed as gross misconduct.

@HedgieHog

There have been posts about this before run a search
Well I haven't seen one recently and there have been posts about practically everything before. If people ran a search every time they had a question, there'd only be about 100 threads on MN - and then they'd get told not to hijack someone else's thread.

OP I worked in retail and it really is luck of the drawer as to whether it will flag up in head office. My advice to you would be to give your manager a heads up and say she was staying with you over Xmas and was contributing blah blah and she used her card without thinking. If they have a heads up generally if it’s flagged up they can stop the storm before it starts if you get what I mean. You’re basically showing you have nothing to hide and it was an “honest” mistake. But yes don’t do it again. It’s not worth the anxiety.

You will have to prove that the shopping was not for her personal use.

SandlakeRd · 17/12/2020 08:52

I have a second discount card as my husband works in retail. He and I had to sign to say the cards would only be used for personal use and any items purchased are for personal use. He said recently someone was disciplined for trying to sell some stuff on that they had bought at discount.
If I ever buy something for someone else I pay and they give me the money. I maintain the pretence even at the till!
That said I am sure you will be ok as a one off!

Wasn't there a thread in employment a while ago (although it might be as much as a year) about somoeone whose husband was being fired from Tesco for this exact thing? It doesn't really matter whether people on here think this counts as gross misconduct or not, what matters is the spcific rules which Tesco apply to their own employee Clubcard scheme.

I still feel sick over this and can't sleep or eat now but does anyone know how quick they would pull me in if it is flagged up as I can't cope waiting weeks worrying over a stupid mistake

@Lulabelle1885 I can imagine it's eating you up. But it's done now and you ruining your Christmas over it isn't going to help.

Try and put it out of your mind every time it pops up.

If a manager comes to you about say "actually I wanted to talk to you about this as I've been worried". Then you have the great excuse that the previous poster suggested about your sister contributing to your household food for Christmas.

Don't deny it, be apologetic and explain it was a complete one off, lapse of judgement.

It will be fine. It's unlikely to be flagged up but you have a plan if it does (which it won't).

I'd hide this thread as roots of people seem to like worrying you over it. Put it out of your mind now and enjoy your family Christmas.

Lulabelle1885 · 17/12/2020 18:29

@footprintsintheslow thank you. Your very kind and yes I will hide it as I've spent the day checking it

The sister staying with you over Christmas and doing a shop for it, is a solid excuse.

I think it would be seen as reasonable as it's not a regular thing.

It takes a few days to be passed down so if you don't hear anything this week then don't worry.

One thing I would say as a former union rep and someone who has sat in as a note taker lots of times is don't lie if anything does happen. Everyone wants any investigation meetings over as soon as possible so just hold your hands up and say you did it and it won't happen again. It's clear from your posts you are remorseful and won't do it again and they'll see that as well. If you start making excuses about your sister staying it won't make any difference because the club card is for the named person only not anyone else. All you'll do is drag things out and no one wants that, especially managers!

Put it to the back of your mind and enjoy your Christmas.

glasshalfsomething · 17/12/2020 19:23

@Lulabelle1885 try not to worry to much. It could get picked up but it’s unlikely. The odds are in your favour.

For what it’s worth; across our family around 4 different people have worked for another chain of supermarket and at various times we’ve held second cards/used discounts etc and never been caught (nearly 20years now).

If it’s causing you anxiety; just make sure not to do it again.

ExclamationPerfume · 17/12/2020 19:24

Your sister can't be struggling that much if she spent £200 on shopping.

Unhelpful comment that has nothing to do with the situation.

@Lulabelle1885 did anything ever come of this? Did you ever get flagged up? I’m curious!
