My daughter always stinks of BO!

My dd13 suffers with really bad BO. She had a shower this morning and has had to have another. It’s so bad it goes through her shirt onto her school blazer. We’ve tried mitchim (?) and it was working but doesn’t seem to anymore. We are currently using a spray (can’t remember name but something like sure).

It’s so bad and she says she washes properly. She’s in there long enough!

We originally caught her wearing a scabby bra that I thought I had thrown away that absolutely stunk!

It’s been thrown away now.

I had to wash her coat yesterday bevause it stunk so bad.

It’s driving me insane!

What can I do?

My 12 yo DS is the same. He has a bath every morning before school but if he skips deodorant he stinks after school. I also have to remind him to wash under his arms properly and to wash his hair with shampoo otherwise he just lies in the water then gets out. Washing properly and an antiperspirant deodorant have worked for him.

Anhydrol Forte is absolutely brilliant. You'd have to check that it can be used for her age but I don't see why it wouldn't. Also, follow the directions properly or it will make her sore. DH suffered terribly but found that to be the only thing that helped as it stopped him sweating from his arm pits entirely. You don't need to use it daily, usually 3 days use keeps him dry for a month!
Second this. I had it prescribed as a teenager. Felt like I was sweating loads and was so self conscious about wet marks on clothes. This is a miracle worker although stings horribly if used after shaving (it recommends waiting 12 hours I think). I got it again recently for my sister's wedding and kept me (and my dress) dry on one of the hottest days of the year.

Dr gave me a prescription initially but you can buy it from a pharmacy and it's not too pricey. Definitely worth a try.

MrsRoyCropper · 15/12/2020 18:51

Odaban available from pharmacy, ask around the counter. It will sting a bit if used on shaved skin but used every few days it will eventually stop the sweating. Regular deodorant is inadequate for heavy sweating

Bunbunbunny · 15/12/2020 18:54

Sounds odd but might be worth checking her sugar levels, close relative used to smell more when they were uncontrolled and it was a strong BO smell.

Had she started her periods?

dollymoo · 15/12/2020 19:00

I had this issue as a teenager, what was happening was when I sweat a lot it obviously get into the armpits on clothing. I would wash my clothes and they smelt fine but within an hour of wearing a clean top I would smell again.

It was to do with the armpits in my clothes it must have kept traces of bacteria in them even after washing so after a short time of wearing them and sweating I would smell instantly. Thing is I didn't know Joe to fix it and grew up with no money and Dad worked a lot so I just tried to sort it myself without success. You need to purchased new tops or as someone said treat the armpits of clothes each time with something before washing

Suzi888 · 15/12/2020 19:01

Are you washing the clothes on a high temperature and a long wash. No fabric conditioner. Is she washing properly in the morning?
If it’s really excessive she may have hyperhidrosis, a friend of mine had it in school, it was just her hands though (I think).

dollymoo · 15/12/2020 19:01

Spray white vinegar as suggested

My daughter always stinks of BO!
QuestionableMouse · 15/12/2020 19:05

I find tea tree soap really good. I sweat a lot at work over the summer and it seems to help keep any whiffs at bay.

Flvq · 15/12/2020 19:06

Proper soap like imperial leather also cleans make up sponges like beauty blenders really well.

GameSetMatch · 15/12/2020 19:06

I use men’s deodorant, it works much better than men’s, also a stick deodorant rather than a roll on or spray.

Try Perspirex. It's expensive but very powerful and stops sweat completely.

JingleJohnsJulie · 15/12/2020 19:47

My DD is the same age and has the same problem.

We have to wash her school shirts and bedding at 60. Like you she gets a clean shirt everyday and bedding gets done weekly.

Blazer gets washed at the weekend.

Does she need some new bras so that she can have a clean one each day too?

Stinkerbells · 15/12/2020 19:51

The Dove Maximum Protection Original Cream worked wonders for me (looks similar to the Sure as suggested by PP). The other scents don’t seem to work as well as the original. Tried Mitchum and Perspirex etc years ago and felt confident with Dove. If it’s not available will get the Sure as it’s pretty good too but everyone is different. Assume hormones might react differently. Agree with everyone about changing bra’s regularly and shaving too, thought it might be a bit psychological but I definitely don’t feel clean if unshaven.

Does she wear cotton shirts for school? That will make a difference, I have some lovely shirts but can’t wear them for a full day as the material doesn’t breathe.

I’ve been known the stick (obviously clean) pantry liners in the armpits of my shirts hahaha, usually running around like a nutter chasing time after a roasting hot bath and melting hot hair dryer.

Tesco normally charge about a fiver for Dove but if you have a Savers or something similar locally it retails for £2.50 there so worth shopping around.

Hope you get it sorted for her.

nellywassmelly · 15/12/2020 19:57

Poor DD, I had the same problem and like a pp, was so aware of it I barely moved my arms for two years.

Speaking from my own experience, does she really know how to wash? I didn't know you had to wash morning and night. I was a bright girl but it totally bypassed me.

Spray deodorants are no good on us smellie nellies and I second the Sure recommendation.

WhipperSnapperSteve · 15/12/2020 19:58

DD suffered from this, bar soap for washing and Mitchum Ultimate & spray deodorant was the only way of keeping on top of things, plus biological washing powder.

DiscontentedWoman · 15/12/2020 19:59

Perimenopause made me hum - honestly the most effective thing was ditching shower gel for washing underarms and using proper soap for my pits (none of that Dove bar nonsense), and then all has been well since. Cheap and effective (my newfound posh soap addiction notwithstanding). I would honestly give that a go before spending money on deodorants. Shower gel is a bloody con.

pompey38 · 15/12/2020 20:30

She’s not washing properly, smell her when she cones out and send her back if she smells straight out the shower .

RebeccaRaspberry · 15/12/2020 20:34

It's a case of not washing thoroughly I should think. They're at an age where they need constant reminders. I tell my 14 year old to wash twice under his arms and rinse clear each time. And I've put it into a bloody rhyme so it sticks on his head (he has some processing issues!)

He then has a roll on or stick deodorant and that, with a daily shower and a fresh shirt each day keeps him smelling fresh

I also wash his blazer weekly (really easy as comes out practically dry so can be hung up to dry and air totally) and pyjamas changed daily too

lesleyashfishlips · 15/12/2020 20:36

90 degree wash the shirts. With a double dose of fabric bleach. None of this environment saving 30 degree stuff.

The high heat will kill anything that's in the fabric of the shirts that's making them smell.

Lovemusic33 · 15/12/2020 20:37

Both my DD’s are the same, I feel sorry for anyone that has to sit near them. Sure do a 72 hour deodorant which seems to be pretty good as long as they remember to use it.

Sandcastles09 · 15/12/2020 20:46

Once the smell is in the armpits of the clothes even if you wash it in biological it often stays. It smells lovely until you start getting a bit warm and then it’s back again. Sometimes it comes out in a really hot wash but better to get her a completely fresh set of shirts if you can afford to before starting new products.

TeenTitan007 · 15/12/2020 20:50

I don't buy anti perspirants for DD, so after searching for ages and failing with 'regular' deos we tried Nuud. It needs to be applied every 3 days (only), post shower and it just kills the smell. Game changer!

WotsitWiggle · 15/12/2020 21:01

Switch to soap - shower gel leaves a film, soap properly cleans. Not moisturising soap, something plain like baby soap or medicated like pears.

Try washing her shirts and bras in halo sports wash, and check the underarms when they dry - sometimes I can smell the odour on DDs clothes when ironing them, those go straight back in the wash with the halo.

sixswans · 15/12/2020 21:03

Gotta kill the bacteria - do the clothes on a hotwash
