My daughter always stinks of BO!

My dd13 suffers with really bad BO. She had a shower this morning and has had to have another. It’s so bad it goes through her shirt onto her school blazer. We’ve tried mitchim (?) and it was working but doesn’t seem to anymore. We are currently using a spray (can’t remember name but something like sure).

It’s so bad and she says she washes properly. She’s in there long enough!

We originally caught her wearing a scabby bra that I thought I had thrown away that absolutely stunk!

It’s been thrown away now.

I had to wash her coat yesterday bevause it stunk so bad.

It’s driving me insane!

What can I do?

When I'm excerising and have layers on that can build up the sweat levels high, and be quite smelly. Usually I cahnge the clothes too and put fresh ones on as needed.

endofthelinefinally · 15/12/2020 17:24

Being in the shower for ages doesn't necessarily mean they are washing properly. Sometimes you need to spell out exactly what is required. I agree that soap is much better than shower gel.

BlindMedusa · 15/12/2020 17:24

I can second the dettol bar of soap. I do swear by Mitchum though but the roll on not the spray. I dont find that the sprays work

catnoir1 · 15/12/2020 17:25

Go, dermatology after the gp gives you all the lotions and potions. My friend gets Botox under her arms for this very reason. Problem has never come back.

Christmassequins · 15/12/2020 17:27

Yes, she needs to wash with proper soap, that and one of the deodorants listed will sort it.

movingonup20 · 15/12/2020 17:28

Sounds silly but does she know to wash properly under her arms with soap? I had to explain to my dd to squeeze shower gel onto the puff and get it soapy because if they just put gel on their hand it could be sliding off before reaching her armpits if you know what I mean. I found roll on men's works better too

Pantheon · 15/12/2020 17:28

Echo pp who said try sure maximum. Is she anxious? That can make it worse.

Mmn654123 · 15/12/2020 17:29

Perspirex.

Fantastic stuff. I went through a phase a decade ago when I just stank to high heavens. No idea why. This solved it. Stopped using it after a few months and it was never a problem again. Probably hormones.

Ginfordinner · 15/12/2020 17:30

Ditto swapping shower gel for soap.

Shower gel leaves a film on the skin and doesn't clean armpits properly.

movingonup20 · 15/12/2020 17:31

Ps my dd is an adult (with asd) and still have to remind to shower, it's common for kids to go into the bathroom and run the shower but only wet their hair, even her neurotypical dsis did that at 13

DobbyTheHouseElk · 15/12/2020 17:32

Is it the blazer that stinks?

im5050 · 15/12/2020 17:33

What’s her bedding like
I would if you can afford it, wash her full bedding set every other day Including pillow cases and bed sheets and do one Set of bedding on and one set in the wash
Use soap not shower gel or dove but proper soap
And make sure she dries herself properly

minnie465 · 15/12/2020 17:33

Another vote for hibiscrub surgical scrub someone mentioned upthread. I used it for a different problem and noticed I don't smell despite not wearing deodorant. Also sorted DHs smelly feet. You can buy it on Amazon. Or buy small bottle in bottles for about £7.
Switch to bar soap once the hibiscrub is finished!!
And use vinegar on clothes when washing. Will kill the bacteria.

SirVixofVixHall · 15/12/2020 17:35

Also her school shirts- are they a poly mix ? Because anything with polyester in holds sweat smells and makes the smell worse, pure cotton shirts ( John lewis do robust ones, I avoid polyester for environmental reasons and the JL cotton shirts last really well and can take a hot wash). I only buy cotton school jumpers too.

lemonsquashie · 15/12/2020 17:35

It's hormones

I suffered badly at school. Used to wash my armpits at break times and change shirt sometimes half way

I didn't lift my arms up for about 2 years. They were glued to my side

Try driclor

Coronawireless · 15/12/2020 17:37

As pps have said, wash with soap and use a bar deodorant.
And one more thing...the blouses may need to be thrown out and start afresh. Once the smell has got in, that’s it. Even if they smell ok straight from the wash, they’ll stink within an hour of being worn again.

SirVixofVixHall · 15/12/2020 17:38

Is her blazer synthetic or wool ? I remember a school friend with terrible BO, her blazer stank to high heaven, so although her blouses were clean every day she still had a strong smell from the blazer.
I wash everything, even coats, as I don’t have a local dry cleaner. If you have a decent wool cycle on your machine you can wash her blazer.

Coronawireless · 15/12/2020 17:38

*a bar antiperspirant

Pootle40 · 15/12/2020 17:39

@Ernieshere

Get some Sure Maximum, its £3.50 in Tesco & Boots, £5 in other places.

I was fine until I had DD, then it all went pear shaped bloody hormones

I found Sure eventually, after trying loads and I could wear the same top all week at work if I wanted to (I wouldnt!) but it stays that fresh.

Me too. This or the Dove 24 hour one work for me.
Blibblob · 15/12/2020 17:41

Driclor?think that’s how you spell it.
You can buy it from Amazon.

Thedarksideofthemoon30 · 15/12/2020 17:43

Thanks all!

She has Cotten shirts from marks and spencers.

I will swap to soap! Never thought of that.

She hasn’t shaved yet but I’m thinking it’s time?

Double check that she is actually scrubbing her pits with a loofah/gloves when she showers, not just with her hands. If the advice everyone has given doesn’t work, definitely take her to the GP asap before she starts being bullied for it. Kids can be cruel unfortunately.

CountFosco · 15/12/2020 17:45

The simple solutions are the best. Wash with soap (there's a thread here about the wonder powers of soap) and cotton clothing, get rid of the stinky polyester.

MustardMitt · 15/12/2020 17:45

You need to smell her straight out of the shower, and tell her to apply deodorant then, not next morning.

I can almost guarantee she’s just not washing properly which is easily remedied.

Gooseygoosey12345 · 15/12/2020 17:48

Anhydrol Forte is absolutely brilliant. You'd have to check that it can be used for her age but I don't see why it wouldn't. Also, follow the directions properly or it will make her sore. DH suffered terribly but found that to be the only thing that helped as it stopped him sweating from his arm pits entirely. You don't need to use it daily, usually 3 days use keeps him dry for a month!
