My daughter always stinks of BO!

My dd13 suffers with really bad BO. She had a shower this morning and has had to have another. It’s so bad it goes through her shirt onto her school blazer. We’ve tried mitchim (?) and it was working but doesn’t seem to anymore. We are currently using a spray (can’t remember name but something like sure).

It’s so bad and she says she washes properly. She’s in there long enough!

We originally caught her wearing a scabby bra that I thought I had thrown away that absolutely stunk!

It’s been thrown away now.

I had to wash her coat yesterday bevause it stunk so bad.

It’s driving me insane!

What can I do?

Soap worth a try. Also check polyester content of clothes - cotton is much better.
This deodorant is great - Earth Conscious peppermint. It’s not anti- perspirant but it’s been a game changer for me and my daughter. May not work if issue is more hormonal. I can now rewear clothes and wouldn’t have been able to before!

NoSleepInTheHeat · 15/12/2020 17:50

It was me as a teen. I guess a mix of sweating a lot, hormones and also not really caring. And I was horrified when my mum talked to me about it, nodding along while thinking «leave me alone».
I don’t remember it being an issue when I was 17-18 so it must have gradually became better during the teen years,

BuzzingTheBee · 15/12/2020 17:50

She needs to wash her pits with anti bacterial handwash and using a scrub mit is a good idea too... sometimes you need to change deodrants as the body gets used to them.. we like the cream sure/dove ones. You may need to replace clothes if that bad.

BuzzingTheBee · 15/12/2020 17:55

Does vinegar get yellow pit marks out? Need to do DD’s shirts?

Monstermissy36 · 15/12/2020 17:56

Is she washing in the shower? I know my 13 year old tends to think that the soap from the shampoo running down will do the trick 🙄 I'm always reminding him to actually wash with soap under his arms and sometimes have to send him back in if he's forgotten. Spraying over unwashed pits won't work and they do still smell....

OverTheRainbow88 · 15/12/2020 17:59

Does she shave her armpits daily?

I feel like if I miss a shower and don’t shave for one day I smell more!!

collywobble · 15/12/2020 18:01

Triple dry roll on at night was the only thing that worked for my children through the horrible BO phase. I used to get in the car after school and have to wind the windows down it was so bad but this really helped and also showing them how to actually wash into the armpit area thoroughly .

simonthedog · 15/12/2020 18:03

My DH is allergic to most deodorants and on hot days had terrible BO. Until we bought this, www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000L978FU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?psc=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&ie=UTF8
It was honestly miraculous and lasts for such a long time.

RunningOnMusic · 15/12/2020 18:08

Shower every day using an anti bac bar of soap (as an aside this will help with acne prone skin later too) not shower gel. Use roll on anti persp and double up with a spray ideally on shaved pits. Clean tops and bras every day - washed biological liquid/powder and potentially anti bac in wash like Dettol (this is also good on smelly socks and gym stuff).

AnoDeLosMuertos · 15/12/2020 18:08

@Thedarksideofthemoon30 make sure your dd is drying her pots before she applies deo.

AnoDeLosMuertos · 15/12/2020 18:09

*pits!!

ohgetoveryourself · 15/12/2020 18:11

Driclor is meant to be good

Cornettoninja · 15/12/2020 18:11

Some great suggestions here but I just wanted to add it’s worth having a look at her diet too; some of us are blessed with the power of sweating out the scent of our foods!

Onions, garlic, cumin - all common culprits that make BO worse, actually not worse just more noticeable in a society that doesn’t widely eat them regularly. Apparently the British are prone to smelling like sour milk due to our high dairy intake so that’s another food group worth looking at.

Of course implementing that will depend on how bothered your dd is by it and whether she agrees changing her diet would be worth it.

Kidneybingo · 15/12/2020 18:14

Something scrubby with the soap works. So a loofah or similar.

pollysproggle · 15/12/2020 18:17

Also some dettol laundry cleanser in the wash

Iggly · 15/12/2020 18:17

Are you washing her shirts on a hot wash? Otherwise the smell will return quickly.

midinthenight · 15/12/2020 18:17

Driclor overnight is excellent stuff. Can itch a bit but works wonders.

Jobsharenightmare · 15/12/2020 18:22

She doesn't need to shave until these other suggestions have been tried. It may be just doesn't actually wash her armpits or needs some different deodorant and these will resolve it.

tofuschnitzel · 15/12/2020 18:25

Seconding the advice to spray white vinegar on the underarm area of every top before washing laundry as normal. It is not enough to use biological washing powder, that won't get rid of the smell in the clothes and it tends to come back with a vengeance once the fabric heats up from body heat. The white vinegar neutralises the odours and the clothes don't smell of vinegar after washing. Please try it, it really does work.

Pinkyandthebrainz · 15/12/2020 18:27

Driclor from Boots

Brown76 · 15/12/2020 18:29

Washing morning and evening (so washing off the days sweat rather than letting it soak in overnight) plus washing not only in the pits but the whole area up around tops of arms, shoulders and sides, thoroughly with soap and washcloth (facecloths that you then Chuck into a hot wash are good).

JoeCalFuckingZaghe · 15/12/2020 18:32

Swapping to soap really helped DPs stinky pits.

Iris5543 · 15/12/2020 18:34

I se that sure....it’s a life saver.

FayKnights · 15/12/2020 18:39

It won’t be the deodorant, it’ll be the soap/shower gel. I get really whiffy if I use shower gel or cosmetic soap like Dove, but thanks to suggestion on here I find real soap like imperial leather work really well for me. Its all the hormones! Mine are per-menopausal though!
Hope you get it sorted.

tasmaniandevilchaser · 15/12/2020 18:48

Definitely the anti bac wash in the washing machine, Dettol do one that goes in the fabric conditioner drawer. Her shirts might smell ok when they come out of the washing machine but as soon as they warm up, they will smell again.
