Which side of the supermarket argument are you on?

Asda have announced they're closing as a thank you to staff. The others are insisting they'll stay open.

Personally, I don't think any shops should be open on Boxing Day, any year, but I know many don't agree.

I think they should be closed normally but understand they might want to make up for lost time this year.

FinallyMrsE · 10/12/2020 14:32

I think all shops should close on Boxing Day and I take my own personal stand against them by not going in any. It does absolutely no good whatsoever in the grand scheme of things but it makes me feel better.

HallFloor · 10/12/2020 14:32

Supermarkets? They've had a bumper year.

FinTutuola · 10/12/2020 14:34

Yep I think they should be closed too. I refuse to go to any shops on Boxing Day!

combatbarbie · 10/12/2020 14:39

I don't know anyone who goes shopping on boxing day!! It's absolutely the right thing for them to do.

Thatwentbadly · 10/12/2020 14:40

@CaptainMyCaptain

Supermarkets have made more this year then in previous years.

I don’t think there is a need for shops to be open on Boxing Day.

Spongebobsquarefringe · 10/12/2020 14:40

They should be shut let everyone have an extra day off

icedaisy · 10/12/2020 14:41

They should close

Todaytomorrow09 · 10/12/2020 14:41

Close - no need to be open

Justmuddlingalong · 10/12/2020 14:42

I think they should close on boxing Day. But, I think the staff should be given the extra day rather than having to use an annual leave day.

Disfordarkchocolate · 10/12/2020 14:43

Closed. Supermarket staff have had an awful year.

Samcro · 10/12/2020 14:43

no supermarket or shop needs to be open on boxing day.

user1936863452 · 10/12/2020 14:44

Are we going to close all the other sectors that have worked hard this year too?

If workers can't work boxing day, will they still get enhanced pay as if they'd worked the day? Doubt it.

It's a PR exercise.

unmarkedbythat · 10/12/2020 14:46

Boxing Day the supermarkets should be closed. There's no good reason for them to be open.

Clockstop · 10/12/2020 14:48

We always pick up a turkey crown on boxing Day for very cheap and use it for turkey sandwiches, so for that selfish reason only, I want them to stay open.

Almostslimjim · 10/12/2020 14:49

As long as they are paying people and giving it them as a "free" day off (e.g. not from their holiday allowance) then yes, they should be closed.

Pipandmum · 10/12/2020 14:49

I got time and a half of i worked a holiday - do they? It was worth it for me to work then.

CakeIsMyFavouriteAndBest · 10/12/2020 14:50

They should close. I work in another shop that closes on Boxing Day. A few years ago we had flooding in the town and several of our staff were flooded out of their houses on Christmas eve.
Needless to say they weren't at work the days after Christmas and we still had customers complaining that our cafe was shut (we closed it to reduce the water in the drains to prevent further flooding), lack of staff (who were dealing with the aftermath of their ruined christmas), lack of cleaning products (obviously a lot had gone to people flooded), and then they have the classic moan of how busy it is and people shouldn't be shopping those days and should give shop staff a rest when they are out themselves 🙄

PortiasPlumUpduffedPudding · 10/12/2020 14:50

Supermarkets should be closed, the staff want a Christmas with their families the sane as everyone else and I'm sure Joe public can wait a coup!e of days to buy marked down Christmas pud and baubles

Viviennemary · 10/12/2020 14:52

I think fair enough to close Boxing Day. People can make sure they've got the essentials in.

2bazookas · 10/12/2020 14:52

they should close and give all the staff a proper break.
Nobody needs to go shopping on the 26th.

Limer · 10/12/2020 14:54

Closed. For 3 reasons:

  1. To stop people making unnecessary shopping trips
  2. Supermarkets have made enough profit already this year
  3. To give the staff a well-earned day off
Soubriquet · 10/12/2020 14:55

We’re open on Boxing Day (the shop itself) but my department isn’t.

In fact my department is the only one that’s closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day!

willsantausesantatize · 10/12/2020 14:55

They should close Boxing Day.
All shops should.

slashlover · 10/12/2020 14:56

Team ASDA.

If workers can't work boxing day, will they still get enhanced pay as if they'd worked the day? Doubt it.

When I worked for a supermarket (Co-op) they had recently changed the contracts so that Boxing Day, NYD etc was single pay and TOIL, that was it.
