When I was 4 I got a Hello Kitty compact with a comb and mirror. I don't know what happened to it but I remember it so clearly and I was hugely proud of it. I still wonder what happened to it.

I've just looked it up and found the exact one

I do remember lots of other things but that is the one that has always stood out.

Baby beans. A bean bag baby with a dolly head. Fell in love and declined to open any other presents.

The one I was most impressed with was a pair of sparkling earrings, but not because of the actual earrings!

They came in this little Santa. I thought was completely adorable and was happily playing with Santa himself for about an hour before he flipped open and I realised it was a box. I was in awe from the element of surprise!

I've found a picture of similar Smile

The stocking I remember best was from the year I was woken early in the morning by my brothers hammering on my bedroom door asking "have you got it?" Turns out we each got a table tennis bat in our stockings and they were looking for the ping-pong ball. Unknown to us our Dad had converted an old dining table into a table tennis board in our loft and we had almost endless fun playing it - until we all got too tall to play under the sloping ceilings.

ParkheadParadise · 07/12/2020 13:21

We didn't have a stocking when we were young.

Greenteandchives · 07/12/2020 13:26

One year I got a tiny teddy bear. I had been eyeing him up in the shop for ages, and was thrilled to get him in my stocking. I used to make clothes for him. I still have him peeping out of a basket in my bedroom. I can’t remember any other stocking presents, although we always had a shiny new penny, nuts and a tangerine.

DieCryHate · 07/12/2020 14:01

It was a zipped up baby pink squidgy thing that unzipped into a toy butterfly. I can't remember what it was called but other mid to late 80s born kids may do.

My WOW memory is being taken to see Father Christmas at the garden centre. On the way out I spotted these little personalised embroidered hankies and I said to my parents I wish I'd seen them before as I would've asked him for those. When I opened them on Christmas Day my mind was blown that he somehow knew and got them for me Grin

Oversized novelty glasses which had a plastic frame & psychedelic cardboard "lenses" with a hole cut out to see through. I was 6 & ill with mumps. I can remember sitting up in my parents' bed reading The Muppet Annual, wearing the glasses. They said I looked like Elton John crossed with a hamster.

A big tube of smarties.

Tiny rolls of coloured paper which opened into flowers when you put them in water.

One of those square flannels you add water to and they expand
A plastic parachute man
A sticky man thing you through at the wall and it flipped down the wall
I also always loved getting a new book!

Body Shop bath pearls and a mini bottle of Body shop White Musk moisturiser.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/12/2020 15:18

Some bubble bath in a green parrot shaped bottle.

FourTeaFallOut · 07/12/2020 15:19

On that information alone, think I could date you within about three years Bernadette. Grin

A disposable camera, a torch, body shop bath pearls and white musk spray!

OMG! I had a Baby Beans too! I absolutely adored her and she went everywhere with me. Mine wore the bright pink baby gro and matching hat x
TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 07/12/2020 15:36

Indoor fireworks

The best one was called a Cobra to it was a little tablet but when you lit it it expanded into a big snake of ash.

peaceanddove · 07/12/2020 15:40

The Avon eau de toilette which came in a clear glass bottle shaped like a kneeling unicorn. The bottle cap was the silver horn. I also got the Avon tinted lip balm in the lipstick case shaped like an ice cream. I was over the moon x

AdventureCode · 07/12/2020 15:43

One of those slimy pregnant aliens in an egg filled with slime, and a little padded vinyl diary with a metal padlock on to secure it from my brothers. I adored it.

JMAngel1 · 07/12/2020 16:15

When I was little, a tangerine and one of those swirly snakes.
But my most remembered was when I was about 15. My mum had put loads of samples from Clarins and fragrance vials in. It was so unlike her as she was so not into frippery but she knew I was obsessed ( and still amGrin). We weren't getting on very well at the time (her menopause and my teenage rebellion were not a good combo) and I was really touched by ger thoughtfulness. The thought of her approaching all those fancy counters now makes me well up.

Muddledupme · 07/12/2020 17:00

I got a slinky and played with it for days going downstairs etc. I was devastated when got knotted up.

Ghouliet · 07/12/2020 17:05

Best one was a sticky spider thing that you threw at the wall and it walked down it. Scared the bejesus out of my Grandma with that (soz Grandma) Grin

BrowncoatWaffles · 07/12/2020 17:11

A Home and Away novel: Bobby's Story. I was 11, loved to read, had woken up early and as per the rules was able to open my stocking in my room before waking up my parents. I laid in bed eating chocolate coins and reading my book. I genuinely don't remember being more content at Christmas in my life. It was just lovely.

PajamasnoDramas · 07/12/2020 17:53

We didn’t often have a stocking but I remember the year my younger brother arrived I had quite a bonanza on the present front, still very warmly remembered. The two things I remember from my stocking (it was actually a pillowcase and pretty full) were a chef glove puppet, similar to the one from muppet show and a pocketeers jackpot game.

BrandoraPaithwaite · 07/12/2020 18:01

Cheeky mouse! Wow that was a blast from the past. Loved that toy. I bit the tail a d it had teeth marks all over it.
Also a bendy danger mouse.

HerbErtlinger · 07/12/2020 18:05

I don't remember specifics (other than a sugar mouse) but every year I'd get a (usually Enid Blyton) book and torch right at the top of my stocking. I used to love reading by torchlight after waking super early Xmas morning waiting to go in and open the rest with my parents

Walkthroughthefire · 07/12/2020 18:15

A tiny little care bear and a wee glow worm that was solid plastic and glowed in the dark. A snow globe. Little animal shaped soaps ( body shop), the polar bear smelled of coconut and the elephant was raspberry. I always got wee stationery sets and bookmarks and sweets. I love the stocking

LadyCatStark · 07/12/2020 18:37

My earliest stocking memory is getting a box of little chocolates shaped like Forever Friends all to myself. I don’t know why I was so happy with them but I must have been for them to stick in my mind for so long.

Sniv · 07/12/2020 18:39

@Toddlerteaplease

Ooh, sounds like you got a bottle of Matey, you lucky thing.

My best ever was a gymnast's ribbon. I had never done gymnastics, and was clearly a child that never would, but I felt like the spirit of grace and elegance personified as I twirled with my ribbon.
