My dc have just fallen about laughing, and assured me they've never heard of these. Maybe it's an age think. Anyone know what I mean?

I didn't know Humpty Dumpty was a gonk, thought he was just a Humpty.

Dull but true, I still have several of the gonks pictured in this post. I also have one of these bad boys Welsh Gonk

Comefromaway · 06/12/2020 23:13

I won one a bit like this at a fairground in the 1980s

Humphrey Dumpty was an egg surely? Humpty in Play school was I don’t know what (scary green thing). I always thought it odd that adults on that show played with the dollies, teddies and weird green things and seemed to think they could talk...

Macaroni46 · 06/12/2020 23:23

Yes!
I was also the only member of staff at my work to get the joke when the boss said 'it's 5 to 5 and it's crackerjack' 🥺

RaininSummer · 06/12/2020 23:23

Having read this thread, the word 'gonk' has lost all meaning gonk gonk gonk ! Actually the creepy little buggers seem to be all over my online craft groups this year in their hat over eyes incarnation. I would have called them gnomes though.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 06/12/2020 23:23

Was that the one with the Cabbage Game or was that Magpie?

Simbidian · 06/12/2020 23:39

Yes, I had one in the 60s. Hopefully the pic will load. In those far-off days the gonks were like a sort of Humpty Dumpty with a large head and small body/limbs.

NuniaBeeswax · 06/12/2020 23:41

Gonks are wee pom pom things with googly eyes. I seem to remember a lot of charities would give them to people who donated? (Like they might give out stickers)

Ugzbugz · 06/12/2020 23:44

@Fiftyandmore that is a troll, I'm 40 and collected loads around 11.

A gonk is currently in the range etc, xmas decs, hat over eyes

Jeremyironseverything · 06/12/2020 23:49

Op, I am 100% with you. Also in my 50's and my friends and I had plenty of the things in your picture, which we definitely called gonks. Also had them on the end of our pencils.

The majority of posters on this thread are wrong. We are obviously right.

And humpty from play school is not, and was never, a gonk.

BilboBercow · 06/12/2020 23:57

I always just thought a gonk was a troll!

NancyPickford · 07/12/2020 00:14

I had gonks in the late 60s. They looked like this -

It's a blow job in Scotland.
A drunk person in Ireland
And a shock in Northern Ireland

VenusTiger · 07/12/2020 00:29

To me that's a troll not a gonk - a gonk (for me) was a fluffy ball usually with a hat and feet, most ppl stuck them on their computer monitors.

AdaColeman · 07/12/2020 00:52

Those fluffy balls & tubes like those shown by @Comefromaway (brilliant show!) were tribbles not gonks.

jessstan1 · 07/12/2020 00:54

They were very fashionable soft toys in the 1960s. Some people used to make them out of old curtains and remnants.

Dare I say ... did anyone ever have a winky doll?

lostandfound55 · 07/12/2020 00:55

Yes I have seen lots of quilt covers with gonks on and cushions etc

Gingaaarghpussy · 07/12/2020 01:33

I'm in my late 40's and wouldn't know a gonk if it but me. Wikipedia reliably informs me that Comefromaway is correct.
However I know a troll when I see one, my mother was mean, we were never allowed to collect the latest fad when I was a child, so I never knew any of them.

jessstan1 · 07/12/2020 03:19

@AlizarinRed

Yes, I had one.DM knitted one from a pattern from Woman magazine it looked like the pic but knitted- I think it prob went to be raffled at Scout annual pre-Xmas jumble sale (quite a big deal then) . I'm 60s.
That is a real gonk, the others look like trolls.
Buzzthedragon · 07/12/2020 03:32

A real gonk as I know it is the one AlizarinRed posted. Bit like humptydumpty

that1970shouse · 07/12/2020 03:39

@Joolsin

I'm also early 50s and I know what a honk is - I got one for Christmas in 1970something - like this (only mine was neon orange with white fur underneath). I called mine Geoffrey Gonk!! Grin
Finally!

Trolls are not gonks.

Humpties are not gonks.
Tomtes are not gonks.

that1970shouse · 07/12/2020 03:41

Those little pompoms on ribbon are not gonks.

that1970shouse · 07/12/2020 03:43

@Erictheavocado

This is similar to the gonk I had in the late 1960's. Mine was bright pink. I'm almost 60.
Yes, this is a gonk too.
that1970shouse · 07/12/2020 03:47

@Duffmcstockings

Ahhh yes, in the future, when they think of 2020, they will say, 'remember the gonk wars??' Xmas SmileXmas WinkXmas Hmm
Love this.
