My dc have just fallen about laughing, and assured me they've never heard of these. Maybe it's an age think. Anyone know what I mean?

This is what I would call a Gonk (I'm 50) my granddad made some for me.

Yes this is what I know as a Gonk, have one from the 1950s will have to fish 'him' out.

They've got gonks in Poundland just now, Christmas ones!

Gonks are pompom things with googlie eyes. Sometimes with a ribbon on.

Yes but I grew up in the seventies; which was all about flares, big collars , space hoppers and gonks.

Gonks are fabric or furry. The little hard dolls with mad hair are trolls.

@Fiftyandmore your photo is a troll, not a gonk. This is a gonk. They were around when I was an early teenager (1960s).

I'll add I'm mid 30s and didn't know until a couple of weeks ago when my colleague said she had got her Christmas gonks out.

I’d have died laughing and saying “not a euphemism”.

I only know them as trolls and I’m 45.

To me, a gonk is a toilet roll tube, covered with garish fake fur with googly eyes stuck on. Used as a pencil pot!

I'm 43 and from the NE.

The dolls with the mad hair are trolls and I would just call the things with their hats over their eyes 'christmas ornaments'!

I also thought a gonk was Humpty Dumpty from Playschool.

I'm 50. My gonk was a red felt egg-shaped beanbag. Think it might have had googly eyes but poss made of felt too. Black felt cut out in the shape of feet and glued to the bottom, and a wee flat green sort of flower shaped thing stuck on top of the head.
I lubbed gonky.

Bloody hell my head is all over the place with trolls and gonks.
I predate the plastic ones (think I was in my 20s when they appeared. I would call those trolls.
The furry all over ones are what I knew as a ‘honk’.
Do you think mnhq are all over this thread - we’re all suddenly troll hunting which, although I’m not really sure what it means, I do know is forbidden.

I'm in my late 50s and I had two gonks made for me by my Granny. They were sacklike cuddly toys - soft, with a head and ears and button eyes.

They were not trolls! They are horrible plastic things with mad hair.

My gonks didn't look anything like those Swedish things with big hats either.

My sister had a gonk in our old house, we moved out of there in 1976 and she'd had it years before that. It used to drive our dog insane so it spent years sitting on top of the boiler in the cupboard. Even the word Gonk would set the dog off. Happy memories.
