They emptied my bin!!

So on Friday we missed the bin collection. Totally our fault, forgot to put it out.

Due to it being very full, we were a bit worried about having to get through another 2 weeks, i decided to email the council to ask for a one off pick up. Said it was our fault, not theirs. We live near the depot so figured they might be able to tag it onto another route, but thought if you dont ask, you dont get!

Never heard anything back so just thought they had decided to ignore my cheeky request, but 10 mins ago a little bin lorry turned up, they went and got our bin from round the side of the house, and emptied it!

Only realised when we heard the noise, so ran out and was able to say thank you, but so happily surprised that this actually happened!

Is this a thing all councils do or is mine particularly nice?

Most councils have a missed it round but usually its if they missed it not you :-) So yes they must have been quiet or you were extra nice and they liked that - lol

ExclamationPerfume · 02/12/2020 13:48

You have some good bin men there. Ours struggle to empty them on the right day even when they are put out. Last Christmas we went for 6 weeks without them being emptied.

Thesearmsofmine · 02/12/2020 13:50

That’s nice!! Ours are terrible, if they miss a bin you can put in a request for them to come back but it usually doesn’t happen(nightmare if you don’t drive).

IndecentFeminist · 02/12/2020 13:51

Ours do, they're fab. They also take extra bags etc when they're not meant to.

FireUnderpants · 02/12/2020 13:52

My council do. I'm at the end of a cul de sac, and my neighbour often parks right in front of my bin, so unless the binman walks behind the car to check it gets missed.

Zoolally · 02/12/2020 14:01

Ours do missed collection. They have a specific page on the council website where you request it. They do make it clear it’s not guaranteed and it’s only if they have staff and time, but they’re usually pretty good.

JustAnotherUserinParadise · 02/12/2020 14:23

wow... we once had one extra black bag that wouldn't fit in the wheelie bin - I left it (neatly bagged and tied etc) out next to the wheelie bin and htey took the bin but left the bag!

TwentyViginti · 02/12/2020 14:24

I have huge bin anxiety, I really am that sad! Grin

Great news, OP. Little things like that can really make your day Smile

WhySoSensitive · 02/12/2020 14:26

We have those large business bins because our house is also a warehouse type thing - we have two sets of bin men.
If I forget to put it out (which I always do!) One set will go and get it out the yard and be helpful and the other won’t take it unless it’s in a very specific location! I prefer my helpful bunch 😂

whopooedinthepyrex · 02/12/2020 14:44

Very envious! I don't live in the UK, we don't have any sort of bin collection. Everything has to be taken to the communal bins which are at least a mile away.

AnneLovesGilbert · 02/12/2020 14:48

I’ve never heard of this!

I once forgot to put the bin out and as I went to the window in a panic when I heard them doing the rounds I saw them walking down the path to get mine, which was very kind of them.

Please make an official compliment/thank you. I bet they get loads of complaints and a bit of good will goes such a long way.

Yes, please do this op

BlackForestCake · 02/12/2020 15:02

Bin people. Women work on the bins too!

Topseyt · 02/12/2020 15:06

Our council are OK if a bin has been missed, although I only have experience of reporting it when they have missed it.

A couple of years ago the contractor's ageing fleet of bin lorries were on their last legs and kept breaking down. They were very good about coming back the next day to complete the round when they had effected temporary fixes. They were awaiting the delivery of new trucks, and they and we were all very relieved once those had arrived.

Captainrachy · 02/12/2020 15:09

My friend is the one who takes the calls for missed bin collections in our council area. It’s very handy Grin

starfishmummy · 02/12/2020 15:09

Cynical....but maybe making sure theu get a Christmas tip???

CuriousaboutSamphire · 02/12/2020 15:17

Ours have done this for us. They drove passed us making a minor detour the day after... they actually stopped and knocked on the door! Said they saw lights in and stopped non the off chance!

amusedbush · 02/12/2020 15:19

Our have just changed from being emptied every two weeks to every three. Guess which dickhead forgot the new date and didn't put the bin out?? The council said they could only empty it if it had been their mistake so I've spent the last three weeks creating as little rubbish as possible and putting one bag a week into the large dumpster by the flats across the road Blush

I've set up a reminder on my phone now!

zafferana · 02/12/2020 15:21

That's very nice of them! TBH, I'd never ask if it was our fault (and it has been several times). At our local tip though you can deposit two bags of household waste at a time, which we've done in the past when we've forgotten to put the bin out.

bloodywhitecat · 02/12/2020 15:22

Our bin men are brilliant and to say thank you we often leave them a box of biscuits.

BusterTheBulldog · 02/12/2020 15:22

Fab binmen here also. They emptied mine on a normal day once when forgot to put it out

PizzaForOne · 02/12/2020 15:31

Anyone got a secret crush on any of their binmen?

TeeBee · 02/12/2020 15:37

My binmen come and get my bin if I forget to put it out. Lovely lot. I'll be buying them beer at Christmas.

TwentyViginti · 02/12/2020 15:39

OOH! I did many years ago. Blond tanned god he was. Sigh.
thecatsthecats · 02/12/2020 15:39

The house next to me has been empty for weeks and so therefore have the bins, but the bin men go up the drive every week to check them.

(And the next house along put them back whilst giving me the real stink-eye when I haven't been out to put mine back before 9am when I'm working still in my pyjamas. It's amazing how she can do it without breaking eye contact from ground level. I just stare back :D)
