Shops that have gone but not forgotten

What shops do you miss that have closed down. Mine would have to be woolworths. I use to love going in there.

Ford's

Is that as in 'Fords; it's the family store; Ford's: where your money buys more!' ?

Oh, I used to love Ford's. Staying in the East Midlands, does anybody else remember Beatties - the toy shop that specialised in model trains and paint-your-own little metal things? (not to be confused with other reminisced-about shops of the same name!).

@Helpel

Forgot about bay trading and mark one, pure teenage heaven in the 90s. Also Kookai when I was feeling flush!
I had a Kookai cardigan in about 98. It was grey and black with tiny buttons and I used to wear it like a shirt but with several bottom buttons undone and a belly chain. My mates and I called it "Millie's on the pull" cardi cos I used to pull without fail everytime I wore it . Think the wonderbra I had on underneath helped.

Anyone from Kent on here? Maidstone had an independent shop called Bootlegger by Army and Navy, used to sell some amazing stuff I'm there. I remember a dress I had from there which my DD would kil for now.
Or Little Dorit in Rochester and Rocket further up near the castle arch?

Is Miss Selfridge still going? I used to get a lot of clothes in there, and makeup too it was really funky.

I was a Saturday girl in Miss Selfridge when I was 16 (mid-1970s). They used to give us all an outfit to wear from the current range of clothes in the shop. My favourite was an Indian cotton wraparound skirt - it was the coolest item of clothing I had in my wardrobe!

Oh, I loved Cockburn Street in Edinburgh back in the seventies! I remember changing cubicle doors like in a saloon, louvred with a huge gap underneath. Really tricky when you had to lie on the floor to force up the zip on your jeans!

Much less cool, but does anyone remeber The Skirt and Slack Centre? Excellent punchy name for a shop I always thought Grin

I loved Kookai

C&A in Kingston always had a big ski section I only knew one person who went skiing

They still have C&A in Germany (or did a few years ago)

@marjorie2607 I remember Beatties! They had a pick n mix and I used to love their banana split toffees. Later on I got my wedding dress from there. Happy memories. Think it's HoF now...

Murraytheskull · 06/12/2020 10:42

@MillieVanilla Rocket is still there! It was my shop of choice as a teenager so I was very happy when I went past a while back and it was still there Grin

Vinorosso74 · 06/12/2020 10:57

@bringbackCabanas yes Percy Ingles going was sad. They did great doughnuts and some good bread. Shop near us is yet another empty one.

Oh wow
In the late 90s I knew the owner and she had started to get some quite nice, new stuff in. At one point she had some Moschino stuff. She used to lend me stuff to wear to Subsonics at King Charles on Fridays as long as I looked after it and mentioned I got it from Rocket.
I'm chuffed it's still there

CandidaAlbicans2 · 06/12/2020 22:12

Anyone remember Hyper Hyper - High St Kensington?

@Sssloou, oh my god, yes! 😃 That takes me right back to my teens when I'd get the train to London and go there because it was the only place I could get my goth/punk clothes!

This thread is like a trip down memory lane, but really sad too as a huge number of shops from my youth have gone 😢

Ltdannygreen · 06/12/2020 22:19

Woolies, I worked there for 4 years right up till it closed, amazing place to work, our team were like a mini family. I met My best friend There. I miss the baby clothes. The pick a mix, the Christmas stuff.. everything 😩

Toddlerteaplease · 06/12/2020 22:40

@onetwothreeonetwothree I loved punky fish!

Toddlerteaplease · 06/12/2020 22:42

Ainleys in Leicester. Essential Saturday morning shopping trip. And the Virgin megastore.
